Title: NY Times Crossword Puzzle Correction

The crossword on March 22 gave an erroneous clue for 57-Across, “Showcase Showdown Prize, Perhaps?” — for which the solution was “dinette set.” Such a prize could be awarded only during the “Showcase” portion of “The Price Is Right.” The “Showcase Showdown” is a preliminary round.

And I did that puzzle and didn't even think about sending Will a corrective. Oh well, maybe next time.

I just find it hilarious. I mean I hear about the New York Time crossword being the premiere crossword puzzle in America, and even they get the Showcases' name wrong. I'm half-surprised the show hasn't changed the names to accommodate the misperception. :P

Wouldn't that be like changing "Survey said" to "Survey says" just because everyone misquotes it that way?

Apparently you can do a crossword game show (Cross-Wits, Merv Griffin's Crosswords) but you can't do game shows in crosswords. I mentioned in another thread a crossword I once did that had "Wink Martindale" as the answer for "The Joker's Wild host".

I move that we rename the showcase, "The Showcase Showdown" and the showcase showdown "The Showcase Spinoff."

Nice idea, but then what would we call it when two people get the same amount? A Showcase Spinoff Spinoff?

Corrective will be sent by me. If the favor of a reply is granted, I'll share it with you.
EDIT: Never mind. I shall corrective myself. I see now they have admitted their errata. Back to the bottle I go.

One trouble: without the word "Showdown" the clue doesn't work for a general audience.

And aren't crosswords supposed to be geared toward people who are smart enough to figure out something like that, anyway?

Isn't The Price is Right supposed to be geared toward people who know the prices of some things?

Tell me about it. I can't count the number of words I've found in crosswords that have left me scratching my head, even after I consulted the dictionary. True crossword puzzlers don't need the word "Showcase" in front of them to help them figure out something related to The Price Is Right. (But they do need the right host in a game show clue, as I pointed out earlier.)
