According to a press release (http://\"http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/081029/20081029006036.html\") from earlier today, Ludia has obtained the license to create video games based on the 80s game show Press Your Luck. The article touts that the game will "retain all of the favorite elements of the classic show, rendered with a dynamic redesign, including hundreds of new trivia questions to answer, “spins” on an interactive giant game board, and the iconic Whammy providing never-before-seen animated antics." Customizable avatars, single and multiplayer modes and an achievement/reward mode will be available too.
The game is slated for a 2009 release on PCs, major consoles, and iPhones/iPod Touches.
-
The "dynamic redesign" part of the equation makes me a little nervous (because we saw how well that turned out for Whammy!) but otherwise this could be really good. I'm not all that impressed with Ludia as a casual game developer, but PYL is really a natural for that space.

Ah...It seems that they are aiming for a 360/PS3 release as well. My guess it will be on Primetime, but if it's anywhere near the craptacularness that was the DVD version, thanks but no thanks.

I strongly suspect that the DVD version being crap had a lot more to do with the limitations of DVD-Video-based gaming than it did the inability to do a video game based on the IP well.

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly are the gameplay problems with the PYL DVD game?

The biggest issue (which Chris makes a good point on) is that when you "stop" the board, you have absolutely no idea what you actually hit until the DVD tells you; where the screen freezes has no bearing at all. Plus, IMO, the game being 3 rounds made it drag on too long, especially when your DVD has to constantly jump from scene to scene.
I do have faith that this should be a excellent conversion, as long as they don't feel the need to tack on any unnecessary quirks to the game (I'm looking at you, Whammy!).

If they do it for the Xbox, and they're at all smart, they will include Big Button Pad support.
Understand, though, that I do not credit Ludia AT ALL with being that smart, only that this particular IP, so long as they stick to the script, would be pretty hard to fark up.
-
This game would be pretty hard to mess up, but we've seen people burn the eggs before.
Taking something from Whammy, however, it would be neat if they added the first round from that version as a mini-game. I know they did something like that for the "bonus round" on the slot version.

Obviously someone hasn't played the PYL handheld game. Good heavens that game's broken to heck.
* 1 player only
* No CPU players
* Spins passed in round 1 show up in round 2
* One of the spaces marked whammy is a cash square
* The values are really screwy (SUV in round 1 worth $30K+, while cash squares in R2 are as low as $250)
At least the Whammy animations are respectable.
I'd take a $10-15 flier if it was on WiiWare or XBox Live Marketplace. Surely this game won't get a $40 pricepoint...

Do you mean the controllers which came with Scene It for the 360? If so, I'm all for that.

I hope not. I'd rather just have a "push the button-stop the board" than that. Unless they can get some sort of super-motion-sensitive specific action, you could be stopping the board when you don't want to.

(Yes. I realize that you can MOVE to SD. But it's way too slow. And I'd rather keep my SimCity, Kirby's Dream Course, and F-Zeros readily playable. They need external storage support, but that discussion doesn't belong here.)
And regarding price point...the Fifth Grader game came out for Wii recently, and is tagged at $30 (http://\"http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp;jsessionid=S04M4DGDMME03KC4D3LVAFQ?skuId=9010054&st=Are+You+Smarter+than+a+5th+Grader&lp=3&type=product&cp=1&id=1218008375143\"). I'd pay $30 for a disc game of quality.
/still regretting $40 for TPIR, sadly.

[/quote]I wish that those Buzz! people would port one to the Wii, and use the expansion on the remotes to plug them in.

I actually don't have any gs games on my 360 (Gee thanks a lot Sony >_>), so this will be a welcome addition.

You can also delete channels and games that you've downloaded from Wii Shop, and redownload them later for no charge.

Which is NOT a viable long-term solution. At ALL.
Nintendo stopped the bleeding with the whole okay-you-can-run-straight-from-SD-now thing, but ALL that is is a tourniquet. (ESPECIALLY since with no SDHC support the biggest SD card you can use is 2GB.) The patient is still badly wounded, and I think Nintendo has no clue at all how to fix it, so they're just gonna dance around with the smoke and mirrors until Wii Too ships.
(Fortunately for them, based on my interactions with hardcore Nintendo fans, most of them will suck it right up, so long as Miyamoto stands behind Reggie as he delivers the news and grins like an idiot.)

Where on earth did you read that you can run straight from SD? That's not the format I use (copy from SD, then play from internal mem)?
If so, that's better.

Apparently the fix hasn't shipped yet. (This tells you how much action my Wii sees these days.) It came out of the same press conference where they announced the DSi. Scheduled to ship in Spring 2009.
If so, that's better.
Not much. But a little. The lack of SDHC support is biting them in the ass. (I gotta get some cheap 2GB SD cards while I still can.)
-
Yeah, they are saying Spring 2009. Boo.
And you can get 4GB non-SDHC cards, and apparently they work (according to people on the web, here's a card (http://\"http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820163159\")

...with a goodly bit of pain-in-the-ass fudging, yes. Still not a good solution. At all.
-
Actually, they've announced that downloading directly to SD card is possible but not playing directly from them. Source (http://\"http://kotaku.com/5057877/save-wii-games-direct-to-sd-card-starting-spring-2009\") (Kotaku, I know, but other outlets have reported this).
//I won't get the current video game adaptation of Price.
-
They would be insane to allow downloading directly to a source that the product could not immediately be launched from. The tech support calls would drown them.
(Not saying you're wrong, and in fact some blogs have reported exactly that. That said, I trust video-game blogs even less than I trust Wikipedia.)

Why don't you have any game show adaptations on your 360? There are no game show games for the 360.
Hopefully 1 vs. 100 will be available shortly after the new XBox Live Experience launches in 3 weeks...

On XBox Live Arcade instead as a tangible disc. I didn't know that...not that I'm clamoring for a video game to tell me that I am smarter than a 5th grader.
/Wouldn't mind snagging the easy Gamerscore points.

First, because it's not a release which would be found in stores, to clarify for people who think "shipped" means "shipped to stores, available for purchase at video game retailer of choice." Second, price. The pricepoint for the Wii version of the new 5th grader game is $30. Looking at XBox.com's page (http://\"http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/a/aysta5gxboxlivearcade/default.htm\"), it's $15/1200 XBox points.

Yes. Isn't digital distrubution great?
The vibe I got is that you were regarding it being released on XBLA as a negative thing, and I'm pretty sure you don't think that way.

Slight update: They pushed an update Monday that dramatically sped up transfers from SD, which should allow some sort of run from SD.
(Internet Channel transfer went from 3+ minutes to under 1 with the update.)

Never played their adaption of Price, but from what most people here had said that it's merely average and only worth it if you ever find it cheap. Am I right on that? Because the last game show adaption of a video game I bought was Wheel and Family Feud for the PlayStation almost 7-8 years ago.
Really, it's hard to screw up PYL. All they need simply is to get 3-4 avid PYL fans and let them be creative consultants. Oh, and Scene It/Buzz controller support. Gotta get that in for the maximum PYL experience.
Funny, I once dreamed of making a PYL game for XBLA/PSN. Loads of questions, almost every prize from the show and an accurate representation of the original show, even down to animations and camera angles. I would've swapped Newton and West for Tomarken and Roddy, but the fanb0iz would strike me down with that.
