Title: BET/TV One Game Shows
Post by: GameShowGuru on August 14, 2008, 02:23:20 PM
Most of us here have seen or are familiar with predominately Black game shows such as the Honda Campus All Star Challenge and *groans* The Thou$and Dollar Bee.  But do anyone remember or have seen these game shows which aired on BET or TVOne?

Tell Me Something Good (aired c. 1988)
Family Figures (hosted by Melvin and Mario Van Peebles, aired c. 1990)
Triple Threat (hosted by Spencer Christian, aired c. 1992)
Love Between the Sexes (hosted by Harold McCoo and Sherry Carter, aired c. 1992)
Get the Hook Up (hosted by Russ Parr and Alfredas, aired c. 2004).

Have you seen any of these shows and were there other shows of this type I may have missed?

One I enjoyed was On The Beat, a pop culture/music quizzer which aired on BET in 2001. It was hosted by a comedian named Spike Davis.

Interestingly enough, Spike's MySpace page (http://\"http://www.myspace.com/spikedavis\") claims he "has the distinction of being televisions first African American game show host". I'm sure Adam Wade would like to have a word with him.

I remember watching Family Figures and thought it was interesting seeing Sweet Sweetback co-hosting a game show.  Triple Threat was very similar to the Jim Lange version with more R&B.  Never got around to seeing the others.

I loved Triple Threat as a child and would love to see it again. As Jimmy mentioned, it was similar to the Jim Lange version, except two teams of three family members competed (adolescent, young adult, and older adult), answering multiple-choice questions based on R&B and hip-hop songs, as well as Black TV shows and movies (in which case, they played the show or movie's theme song). Each generation competed one at a time, and answered three buzz-in questions related to the song.

After a number of rounds, there was a speed round, in which anyone could jump in, and the highest score went to the bonus round, in which the family tried to put cover a 3x3 columned grid, placing song titles under one of three artists' names. If they correctly placed the nine songs in their respective slots, the family won a trip to Disneyworld. At one point, there was a tournament of champions where the families played for a trip to EuroDisney.

With Love B/w the Sexes, my memory's a bit foggy. I *think* a couple went out on a date, and would come back and recall everything that happened. There was also a panel known as the "Peanut Gallery" who offered their input, and in the end, someone (maybe both people) got a $500 prize.

One thing I *do* remember about the show was that one male contestant decided to skip the taping, and the co-hostess told him "Your check will NOT be in the male", to which the audience howled with laughter.

I'd love to see both shows...I remember both having very catchy theme songs, esp. TT.

I remember Triple Threat and Tell Me Something Good. I don't remember that much about Tell Me Something Good. I think it was pretty bad, which is why I only saw a few episodes. People would call in over the phone and tell stories or something like that. A celebrity panel (?) would vote on the best story and that caller would win something.

I used to watch Triple Threat every night.  I liked the Jim Lange version in the '80s and thought the BET version was pretty decent.  Too bad I didn't think to save any on tape (this was a few years before I even knew about tape-trading!)  AFAIK, there's only one episode of the BET version around.

Karyn Bryant ("Name That Video"). Al Roker (MSNBC's "Remember This?"). Phil Moore on Nick.

This dude isn't even in the first *ten* AA GSHs.

(edited to remove wrong name, I was thinking of Carrington as named below.)

The first African-American female game show host was Tatyana M. Ali (Ashley from the Fresh Prince).  She co-hosted the Saturday morning (revival) game show Brains and Brawn along with Mark-Paul Gosselaar.

note: some sources say the first Black female game show host was Leslie Uggams (High Rollers).  I think as far as her role with that show goes, that is somewhat up for debate.

OTOH, if either of these are not the case, please advise.

Not even that. If she's a game show host (based on that), so are Markie Post and chris319. She did, however, co-host Fantasy, and was part of the Family Feud Hosts special on account of it.

Bump!

Question: Though he's definately not the first, would Nick Cannon qualify as a game show host? ("Nick Cannon's Wildin' Out")

Well, if Drew Carey's hosting of Whose Line doesn't get him a game show host cred, then Nick Cannon doesn't get the credit.

But, and the TV Game Show Encyclopedia agrees, WLiiA is a game show, so why wouldn't Wild'N Out?

The simple answer to this question is that the TV Game Show Encyclopedia is wrong.

However, if you prefer to think of that source as the infallible and definitive source, and whatever is in it is right no matter what, then yes, it would be hard to argue that Nick Cannon's show is any different.

While I wouldn't qualify it as a game show, it was a good show nonetheless...by MTV standards.

Besides, Cannon isn't a host. He's a gigolo spending lots of dough!

We missed one, and it's fitting that I make the post.

Honda Campus All Star Challenge- AKA College Bowl for Black Colleges, ran from 1990-95. Even after the show was cancelled. HCASC still continued to have national tournaments... including the one I am at right now. I captain the Alcorn State University team, and I'm proud to say that we're performing pretty darn well right now.

Richard Reid (son of Don Reid, creator of College Bowl) is here every year, and I had the pleasure of getting to sit and talk with him and his family. He genuinely enjoys this competition, and he's a pretty nice guy as well.

Funny thing...this is the first year Clint Holmes won't be hosting the Final Four matches. Apparently he cost 50 large to book each year.

Anyways, our team is done at HCASC. We went 7-0 in our division, and lost in the round of 16 because we had a sloooooooooooooow reader. Bummer.

BET was going to revive the old 50s show "Keep Talking" but apparently it never got off the ground.
