Regarding #2...

The only way it could be worse is if you're straddled with Africa in the bonus.  Completely and ungodly unfair.  :)

#5: Funny story here. My mom detested Fun House because she noticed that the kids of any minority rarely won. I found out later that she in general didn't like game shows where very little knowledge was required. She liked Double Dare much better.

#4: Only time I liked this show was when they played the Sonic games.

#3: This show bored me to tears then. Except Mo. I liked looking at her. Or maybe it was the accent.

#2: Missed chances. Missed chances. I was the king of geography at both my Elementary and middle schools, and the day they came to town do auditions, I was out of town. Figures. I hated seeing the US map because for some reason people STILL lost on it. (and it wasn't like they messed up a little here, they would put Idaho somewhere in the Southwest, stupid crap like that).

And Africa? Still cringe now when I watch clips and see that map come up. Asia too, in spite of the extra 15 seconds.

#1: The only thing I hated about this show was the bonus round. It seemed that no one ever won.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe only one person won with the Africa map in the shows five year history.

If the main game of I'm Telling was unfair, the bonus may have been ridiculously easy to game. (I only saw it once.) They have a set number of prizes, and each sibling choose a subset of them. Any prize that they both chose, they won. If they all matched, they won all the prizes available. Solution: Conspire to choose the first (n) prizes alphabetically.

One person ("Tatsuo", I think) won on the Africa map in the show's first week on the air.  Really dramatic stuff, still one of my all-time favorite game show moments for pure excitement.  I really ought to upload it.  Anyway, surely at least one other person in five years accomplished it.

If the question in the clip aired today, I'm sure there would be a (rather undeserved) uproar.

3:51 in, Africa still "scares" me to this day:

I'm kind of surprised they don't make available six or seven eps for the time around the National Geography Bee (also on PBS)...it's not like the episodes all of a sudden are dated.  Killer theme, too.

And lookie here...Jenny wins the Africa map with 1 second (starts about 3:33 in):

Only as a web site. Cracked as you know it was sporadically published at best since the turn of the 21st century, and last year tried to turn itself into a lad mag that lasted precisely three issues.

No it's not.  You just gotta do your homework like everyone else.  I was studying the geography of Africa when I was 8 years old.  My only challenges would be remembering the post-colonization names of the countries (like Zimbabawe instead of Rhodesia or Benin instead of Dahomey, or Burkina Faso instead of Upper Volta.  (An extra 100 points if you can spell AND pronounce the latter's capital) ;-) ).  My other challenge would have been knowing the locations of the African islands like Cape Verde, Mauritius, and Canary islands and tiny countries like Senegal, Djibouti, and Equatorial Guinea).

Can't you see I would've made a killing on this show if it aired during the 80s? ;)

So long as we don't air episodes with the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia, of course. ;)

Thanks so much! I remember why I remember the Africa map so much. Lynne, in listing the locations of the continent, would always go "...Chad, Zaire...". Really weird, I know, but hey. My memories pre-1996 are a bit fuzzy. Forgive me. =P

I have relatives in the Foreign Service who were stationed in Ouagadougou for a couple of years in the late '80s.  Therefore, it's one of the few African capitals I can reliably remember.

[/quote]Interesting: I thought that minorities were the best represented on the kids game shows, at least from what I remember. Regarding your second point, among game shows for kids that used questions at all, Fun House was the one that had the fewest questions to answer. (Which I'm sure was completely planned by the producers, who knew which side of their bread was schmutzed.)

I think they did, and from what I heard, when the puzzle was solved and the contestant was asked to use the word in a sentence, they said this:

"My daily morning jog was ruined this morning when I stepped in a huge Ouagadougou."

A year-old bump, and a bump of my own post to boot, two breaches of internet etiquette, but for the most pleasant of reasons.

Tatsuo saw his clip on YouTube and contacted me.  He didn't have a copy.  He does now.

/He also now goes by 'Tat', which I find vaguely unsettling for some reason.

I do, too, if only for the terrible pickup lines that probably go along with it:

Some of it depends on your education. I learned virtually no geography or world history in school, so even to this day I'm still finding myself saying "That's a COUNTRY?!" even when watching Jeopardy!. I mean, I can tell you that Chad, Sudan, Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco, etc. are in Africa... but beyond that, eh.
