Full "confessional" will be in next week's New Yorker. Although, it might be out now.

Charles Van Doren? Of the Van Doren Van Dorens?

Van Doren Van Dorens?
Sounds like half the Grand Rapids phone book to me...
By the way - do you know how you can spot a Dutch cocaine addict?
He snorts through a rolled-up quarter.

I believe his mother wrote the recent The Country Wife.
His father is a dead ringer for Paul Scofield.

The issue of The New Yorker is out in hard copy as we got it in the mail today; unfortunately, the article is not available on their website. (One of the few pieces that isn't available there.)
I've read the article and the overall impression I get is that of a person who was very confused about what he was getting into, and even much later didn't quite understand the depth to which the scandal had actually occurred. I'm not entirely sure that there were any big revelations in Van Doren's essay, but I'll stop there lest there actually be any spoliers.

Did you think no one else would get that reference?
I never knew Dave Garroway was Jewish and Jack Barry not. And Charles Van Doren raised in Europe.

A lot of the stuff he mentioned I remembered from watching Quiz Show, but that still made for a great read, seeing his first-hand account of everything. And for the most part, he didn't seem to mind the liberties made with the movie.

Bringing this thread back up to note that there is a Stanley Fish essay on the Van Doren piece in the New Yorker, which is then followed by some 300 reader comments.
