Title: "Wanna Bet"?
Post by: tvwxman on July 20, 2008, 10:49:50 PM
Has anyone here seen any promos regarding ABC's new quiz, which premieres tomorrow night? Heck, I work for an ABC affil and we haven't seen squat about it!

Wondering if ABC is burying Ant and Dec's US premiere because it sucks.

Win: George Takei.

Fail: Sherri Shepherd.

I'll watch it, because I love Ant & Dec. But man, seeing Shepherd sitting on the couch made my heart sink.

Tom Bergeron's going to be on the second episode, folks.

Ant and Dec were the back-end guest on Friday's Jimmy Kimmel show, if that counts for anything.

I saw a few while I was watching "Duel...on ABC", the other nite. I notice Tom Bergeron's a guest as well.

Yeah, I saw a couple promos.  I wanna say they were during the MOLE recap show.  Herself said, "That looks like fun!"  Which it does.  We'll see...

4th place last night, getting a third of the ratings the CBS sitcom juggernaut got.

Yipes.

I didn't think it was 'that' bad, but horribly slow.

With a line of tornado warnings across northern Missouri last night, ABC was the only network I could pick up in my basement for storm news.  This wasn't a show that made me hold my breath like WWTBAM or such, but it sure made a tense hour go by easier.  Let's see if it gets a second week or not.  I didn't think it deserved ratings that bad.

Three thoughts I had while watching (nothing spoiler-y):

1) Nobody in America knows who you are, Ant and Dec.  Please introduce yourselves properly to the American audience.  If you want to be cheeky Brits, don't wait until 45 minutes in to do something like that crisps/chips/french fries observation.

2) This show could REALLY use a Bergeron.  Not on the celebrity panel, as host.  Seriously ABC... WTF?

3) This show could REALLY use some Ballbreakers-style side bets.  Without it, the celebrities' involvement basically boils down to betting on coin flips, and trying to make that interesting.  It'd probably be more entertaining to grab the four loudest people from the local horse racing track and bring them in to play.

I have a fourth one -- some kind of audience play-along value.  Do something live on the internet, à la NBC and the DoND choose the case contest.

I watched it. It was okay, not a bad show, but it's missing something. It's just too repetitive to be an hour-long show. At least an incentive for the contestants, i.e. a certain amount of money for each celeb fooled, with fooling all four winning a bonus. Hell, two studio contestants scoring points for choosing, based on the celeb decisions. Just something that allows a little more competition between someone other than a panel.

I forget, but didn't the Mark McEwen CBS one-time special from about 15 years ago work the same way? ISTR celebs betting on outrageous stunts, i.e. changing a tire while driving on two wheels.

[/quote] But the panel is already competing. That part I don't have a problem with. And really, why would the contestants earn money for "fooling" the panel? They're trying to accomplish their goal so they don't look like tools on prime-time telly. Now, if they won all the money bet by Doubting Thomases, that'd be OK by me. There's no way I'm going to put myself out there in that fashion, only to sandbag my feat just because everyone voted "SUCCEED".

Exactly, but with no point scale that I could recall.

Some notes from me, because I know you were all on the edge of your seats waiting:
* I never thought I'd be able to say to Tom Green, "congratulations, you weren't the biggest D-bag on the panel!". But there we are. I don't know who Harland Williams is, I don't care. What a perfect asshat.

* Something has to be done with the betting. It looks awful to have Mr. Sulu triumphantly say "I bet twenty thousand dollars!" to see "$2,000" (p-TING!) come up on the screen. Either have the bets written in ink and hidden away until the reveal, or do something OTHER than using keypads. Blech.

* I also wasn't keen on "before we set the bet, let's see what our panel said." We'll find out by who cheers in what fashion in a bit anyway, why waste time on that? I think a reveal in the style of Final Jeopardy would be just fine.

To Mr. Eberle and others...

Harland Williams is a Canuck comic who IIRC was on Dan Akroyd's "Soul Man" sitcom perhaps?  Which if memory serves correctly, was a spin off of "Home Improvement"?

Ryan

/Didn't really care about "Wanna Bet"; only saw it because I was back from the "How do you solve a problem like Maria?" taping early.

Which makes it...The Guinness Game played for charity. How would you implement such side bets? The whole premise is succeed/fail...you can't really draw it out more than that.

I saw it, I sort of liked it, though it would have been nice to have had, as TLEberle said, a better way of inputting betting data - this is the 21st century, ABC.  No need for technical flubs like that to happen.

As for Ant and Dec, I was pleasantly surprised.  For those that don't know, in the UK, Ant and Dec are TV gold.  They rarely appear on TV without each other, and, amongst other things, in the last ten years, have hosted:

Pop Idol (UK's American Idol, which came first, and explains why Brian Dunkleman was on S1 of Idol here)

UK Gameshow Marathon

Ant And Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway (or something similar), a comedy/variety/sketch show, which was a slightly more 'grown up' version of...

SM:tv Live, a Saturday morning kids' show, featuring the kind of typical weekend kids' entertainment, though it was done in such a way that it was appealing to adults too.  Also notable that the third host of this show was "So You Think You Can Dance"s Cat Deeley.

Long before all this, as teens, Ant and Dec appeared in a kids' drama show called Byker Grove, filmed and set in their native Newcastle (hence their accents!), and after that, they had a brief pop career as pseudo boy band PJ and Duncan.

It should be pointed out that the "High School Musical" reality show did "Wanna Bet?" no favors.   The show that was supposed to be the focal point of ABC's summer programming is now the albatross, while America loves those Big Balls.  :)

As for "Wanna Bet?" itself, I liked it as a little summer bit of light entertainment.  Didn't take itself seriously (and the way they staged the Man Who Can Tell You What CD It Is by Licking It was very clever) and I like Ant and Dec--not to mention the way that they left in the celeb keying errors (I suspect anyone else besides Gurin would've stopped tape to argue over letting the bets stay and then change them to what the celebs said).

And yes, "Duel" is playing out its string on Friday nights--the final episode is this week.  After "Dance Machine" crashed and burned, ABC went to Old Reliable "AFV" reruns as a lead-in.

That was uncomfortable television, especially when celebrities were playing for charity. I guess they thought it worked because later a miskey worked in a panelist's favor, but it looked really bad and shouldn't have been kept in.

In short, the celebrities should be allowed to free-wheel over in Bettors' Corner through the duration of the program.  Let them make their main bets, but let the celebrities bet with each other after that:

"I'm so confident he'll fail, I bet another $1,000 he can't keep that tire up for 30 seconds, let alone 45!"
"He's a strong lad, I bet he gets 30 seconds easily.  I'll take that bet."

"Oh, he wore himself out with that first attempt, I'll bet any of you 2 grand he can't get to 20 seconds on the next attempt."

"I think this pit stop challenge will be really close."
"No way, the ladies will handle it easily."
"Oh really?  I'll bet you $2000 that the ladies' time for the pit stop is within 5 seconds of the target the men set."

"Anybody with a little training can identify letters with their tongue... betcha he can't do it if there's no words on the CD."

etc. etc. etc.

Admittedly, it'd be a bit hard to follow both the bets and the challenge given that most of the challenges are races against the clock.

Even without that, you've got two hosts now having to divide their attention between the panel and their guest. It would be a nightmare.

It's Ellen K, formerly Rick Dees' sidekick on the radio, now Ryan Seacrest's sidekick on the radio.  Her (arguable) game show resume includes announcing the first season of the 1996 "Newlywed Game" revival (or was it "Dating Game?") and "court reporter" on Chuck Barris' busted pilot "Comedy Court."

I'm going to have to agree here.  I've seen some video on the 'net of these two, and I think that they could be just as big stars here as they are across the pond.  Unfortunately, now that they got the wrong vehicle to introduce themselves properly to American audiences, nobody is going to care.

Unfortunately for "Wanna Bet?" (and "The Mole"), the stinking dung heap that is "High School Musical:  Get Into the Picture" has dragged down the whole night for ABC.

And it's gone after next Monday--Aug. 18 shows the movie "Bewitched" at 9 p.m., with "HSM" at 8.  I would've hoped that they would've tried "Wanna Bet?" at 8 (a better time slot for it) and shunt the remainder of "HSM" over to Disney, but I guess they'll muddle through with it to the bitter end.
