Title: A Millionaire Change for next season
Post by: davemackey on July 19, 2008, 06:56:38 AM
I got an email last night from the Millionaire contestant staff. Even though I was on the show two seasons ago, I'm still getting the periodic notes from them. It appears that among the changes that are coming for the 2008-2009 season is the following: you must now provide pictures of your Phone-A-Friends. I guess they're going to show them on the screen as their calls are taking place.

Season 7 specialty shows are going to include the return of the popular Brides.com Wedding Week and Netflix Million Dollar Movie Week, plus three new ones: Famous Names week, Halloween Week, and 3 Generations Week (in which three generations of a family play together).

Am I the only person who hates the [insert name of sponsor here] Wedding Week?

(Or most of the other "specialty" weeks in general?)

Also, no longer will the Phone-A-Friends be heard. What they say will be captioned onto the screen. It's Michael Tiller's idea. And, no, Fedya, you're not alone.

What could possibly be the reason for not using the audio, but captioning the response?

Are they going to be blasting the MG-HS Hour theme during this while putting an annoying 10-second bumper before the start of it?

I think there's this Federal regulation in which any phone conversation that is aired has to be agreed to by the person being called.  Did the Millionaire people run into a situation where the Phone-A-Friend didn't agree to have his/her voice played on air?

I don't see anything wrong with the pictures.  Just a little something extra.

Not too big on the theme weeks (surprised there isn't Tax Free week), but I will watch the Three Generations week.  That sounds like fun.

Here's the big beef I have with the Tiller lad.
This is the policy he has on his YouTube home page.
It is cut and pasted word for word from there:
"And folks, there are no tolerations here. All spam, rude, revolting, bad comments on ANY video that I post will immediately be deleted, no exceptions".
No tolerance for criticism. He'll go very far in show business.

As for the WWTBAM new photo policy for its 7th syndicated season, they're gonna do what they're gonna do and I'll enjoy your insights and comments as always when the programs begin airing.

No, that was Mark yelling at him about Double Prices.

I was complaining about how he appeared to be ripping Drew for one little thing and not making it clear that he was going after him for a lot of his mannerisms, after which I thought it over and conceded some of the points.

That said, though, Don did make it clear who he was making fun of there...maybe we don't know as much as I wanna give us credit for? I can't tell.

Well, the question is, will they need to? The suggestion that contestant selection was going to be based on this was wholly my own ex-rectum I-wonder-if speculation. If they're collected after the fact and it's in no way part of the process, I don't see where it's going to be a problem.

Count me as another who cannot read that, at least on the surface, as no tolerance for criticism. Yeah, but if the videos suck (as they do in a lot of cases...just be glad you've never watched a Let's Play video), then deleting the comments equals a lack of tolerance for criticism.

And Mr. Tiller's videos are not exactly of a high quality, despite his best efforts.

People can be spiteful on YouTube, yes. But that doesn't mean that every "rude, revolting, bad" comment is without warrant.

While I'm no Tiller fan, this depends greatly on where the line is, no? If he's deleting "OMG YOU ARE TEH SUX00RZ," then I don't see the problem. If he's deleting anything other than "OMG YOU R00L D00D," then that's a lack of tolerance.

Would it surprise me if the line was a little closer to the latter than the former? Not really.

Keeping your YouTube commnts clean of the proof of John Gabriel's Greater Internet F**kwad Theory (http://\"http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/\") (link NSFW) is no different than spam filtering, though, and that's totally his choice.

They are also only going to have a max of three PAFs per person, instead of five.  The PAFs also will have to sign a release.  They never have had to before.

I have heard reports of former contestants being contacted about their interest in being phone-a-friends via webcam.  I don't know if it actually will be part of the show this season or not though.

With the mention of PAFs having to sign a release, would this mean that the producers might try to put some clause in there stating the PAF can't be on Google/Wikipedia/teh internetz during the call?  If they did put such a thing in there, maybe they could force the contestant to forfeit the prizes if the PAF is caught doing that.

I just got back from vacation today; was gone since Wednesday.

I asked Michael Davies if the show would be getting any of the international changes which have been going on since 2waytraffic took over.  He said...

Quote
Brace yourself for the most exciting evolution of the format since Super Millionaire.  All unique to the US at this point – we have not imported any of the international modifications.

No idea what those necessarily are anymore, though.  I'll try to find out soon though, because tomorrow is a rehearsal show.
Title: A Millionaire Change for next season

I share the concern that the "photogenic" qualities of the Phone-A-Friends could be used in contestant selection... but I guess it doesn't help that I already had a pretty dim view of the program's selections after seeing a few shows in person (I was at the tapings of three of the shows with Billy Bush) Honestly, I've never really enjoyed syndie Millionaire.

That said, the "changes" spoken of by Mr. Davies do seem quite exciting, so I'll be looking forward to more on them.

Can't wait to hear about it. I initially cringed when I heard about the 12-question fast track, but came to like it a lot.

Brace yourself for the most exciting evolution of the format since Super Millionaire.  All unique to the US at this point – we have not imported any of the international modifications.

Cripes. I sware, if they add a friggin video wall and change the format that worked since the show premiered in 2002, I'll never watch again. I motion that if this happens, the Game Show Forum should shut down.

I think that with inflation, the top prize should be increased to $1,267,000. This change has been a long time coming.

I wish they would bring back the old phone qualifying contests again, or at least some sort of live, internet test like what Jeopardy! has done in the past.

Let's give Jane & John Doe in Anywhere, USA an equal of a shot at getting on as those who either live in NYC and can stop down to audition or those who wait in long lines at cattle calls in select cities.

/Nowadays, if you can afford the cost of an airline ticket, rental car and gas to get to an open audition, you probably don't need the million.

Or maybe re-instate the $10,000 per show where the jackpot isn't won - retroactive to the last time it was won.  Gee...after 5 years, what would it be up to now?  :)

Hold on just a second. I think they'd give MORE consideration to the residents of Anywhere, no?
