Title: Game Show Slot Machines
Post by: That Don Guy on July 05, 2008, 10:21:45 PM
Game shows seem to be a popular theme for slot machines in the USA; the Indian casinos in California even go out of their way to plug their WoF machines (the gimmick is, there is a wheel on top of the machine with numbers from 25 to 1000, and if a "Spin" symbol shows up on the third reel when you play maximum credits, you get to spin the wheel and win whatever number it stops at).

However, when I went to Vegas last week, I noticed that three game show slots - Match Game, Password, and Family Feud - that were all over the place two years ago were nowhere to be found.  It's not as if they're getting rid of game show themed slots; in addition to WoF, there are plenty of TPIR slots (there are different varieties, including Plinko, Cliff Hangers, Dice Game, and Punch-A-Bunch, and they all feature Rod Roddy's voice) and Deal Or No Deal slots (most of which are Australian "pokies", which are slot machines where the fruit symbols are replaced with playing card ranks (usually Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, and 9), as well as Press Your Luck and The Joker's Wild slots now.  It just seems strange that the other slots would disappear.

Gambling is the ultimate capitalism. If the casino can make more money with a slot machine with a bacon theme, it'll go in. Apparently, the game show ones weren't as popular; Wheel is a likely exception because it's shown all over.

Trying to steer this thing back on topic....

Many machines have a certain shelf life, as it were, and some themes last much longer than others. Delaware has had the Wheel of Gold/Wheel of Fortune games for a while now, and they have the Wheel of Fortune Super Spin machine as well. The Deal or No Deal machines (with the Australian-influenced blonde bombshells and the siren effect for the Bank Offer) have done quite well there too. And the Press Your Luck Big Event games just landed in Delaware and are doing very well.

However, the TPiR slots were once popular in Delaware, and were offered as multi-denominations of 5/10/25 cents per credit. (I hit a jackpot of $1050 on a TPiR slot set to 25c per credit one time.) These machines had a lengthy history on the floors of the Delaware casinos, but as time wore on, fewer people were playing them, having moved on to newer slot games. On my most recent visit to Delaware a couple days ago, the last of the TPiR slots were retired from Dover Downs' slot floor, after servicing Delaware slot jockeys for well over 4 years. For a short time, also, Delaware had the original Jeopardy! reel-spinning dollar slots. They only lasted about a year at the most.

Slot machine themes come and go, and game show themes are no exception. Although it was just a little bittersweet to see the TPiR slots disappear, I look forward to seeing the new slots that replace them. Here's hoping that manufacturers will continue to make exciting new game-show based slot machines for everybody's enjoyment.

So what if I do? It's not like I'm trying to ruin your fun by reminding people what this board is primarily about.... Then again, not everybody can be like Mike LaBrie (http://\"http://www.daizex.com/interaction/board/\") and he's even stricter on people than I am.... But I digress.

Atronic looks to be putting out an updated version of Deal or No Deal slot machine called "The Experience" (http://\"http://www.atronic.com/Games/Linked_Gaming/DOND_TE\") with sound and graphics that are trying to mimic the American version even more. It'll be nice to play them when they arrive at Delaware/PA/Atlantic City... but I'm happy with the original machines for now.

Lord knows I'm not God; I'm sure He's thankful of that.

Anyway, I'll admit those TPiR slots were kinda getting long in the tooth for me... before those TPiR slots were retired, the denominations were lowered to 2-cent/5-cent... I guess they made less and less money as the years went on and eventually paid the Delaware-minimum 87% payback to the players. I'll miss those slots, but I'll look forward to playing more of the new Wheel of Fortune Super Spin and Press Your Luck Big Event games in the future.... they're a lot of fun.

This question probably won't be answered because it just opened up within the last month.  Does the new Caesar's in Windsor have any game show slots?  I have plans to visit Detroit/Windsor in early August, after summer school is complete.  The mathematician in me wouldn't touch a slot machine, but the game show fan in me would like to plunk down up to $20, for the experience.

I spent a few minutes at the Mount Airy Lodge Casino in the Poconos (NE Pennsylvania) in early June.  I don't recall the entire list of what I saw but I can relate that Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right and Deal or No Deal slots were there.  The WOF and DOND machines seemed to be in more prominent locations (but I'm not an expert on this).

The play rules of the machines seem to be much more complicated than the rules of the actual game on which they are based.

I've recently come back from Harrah's Rincon in San Diego... I don't know what's going on with those 25 cent slots there, but nearly every 10 pulls of the handle (or push of the max bet button) on every machine was paying off a spin of the wheel which rarely DID NOT stop on 100.
The $1 machines were doing the same thing.  24/7 you's rarely see a seat empty on those WOF machines....

For those of you familiar with Casino Arizona I in Phoenix/Scottsdale, they have a pretty high pay rate as well....

Okay, since the discussion is about what slot machines make money and which ones don't, this piece from DrBear is ON TOPIC.

Having finished my Krispy Kreme BLT, it's back to the slots...

For those of you who don't follow the darn things, modern slots use random number generators (think a million dice rolling a million times every second) to decide what you will see as a result when you push the button. It is conceivable that if you hit the button at the exact nanosecond five times in a row, you will see five jackpots. However, the vast majority of those numbers are set to "pay nothing back" or "pay back less than was deposited." So don't believe you will hit machines that are "hot." There ain't no such animal.

And don't forget - all slots are the same inside, no matter the theme on the outside - donuts, bacon or Rod Roddy. (If the slots audience tires of, say, a car race theme, there are conversion kits that will quickly change the same machine to a donut or bacon theme. Therefore, for all we know, those TPIR slots are still there, only with graphics promoting Batman, fishing or the flag.)

A full explanation can be found here (http://\"http://wizardofodds.com/slots\"). To summarize it...
Each position on a slot machine is mapped.  The "Double Jackpot" symbol may be mapped to #20.  However, the blank space above it may be numbers 12-19, and the blank space below it 21-28.  As DrBear stated, one number for each slide is randomly generated.

And the winnar is you. I can't speak to Dunkin, but if they are anything like Winchell's, I'm gonna guess they're wholly unremarkable. KK's have their place, but if you put a dozen of those next to a dozen from Safeway, I'll take the Safeway one nine times out of ten. Donuts should be able to be chewed. They should not melt.
