Apparently it's going to be early 2009 before any new episodes of Crosswords are produced... any ideas why?

I'm going to guess this has something to do with it.
Program Partners and its production partners -- Merv Griffin Entertainment and the William Morris Agency -- decided over the past week to halt production because the costs were outweighing the returns.

Which is typically the reason you cancel something, not postpone it. In what way do they expect the economics of it to change appreciably in a few months?
-
The article notes that Program Partners owns the U.S. rights to 195 episodes of Canada's "Inside the Box" and is making it available "immediately," which might well be an improvement.
-
There is a lot more to the spin that Colbert alleges in the story. In the many years that I've been in this business, I can't remeber a show getting picked up, and then, 3 months before the premeire, allege production cost issues as a reason for postponing a show.
This could very well open Program Partners up to a serious lawsuit, from every station group that purchased Crosswords as a viable programming option. 3 months before Sept, and the stations are now left scrambling to find alternatvies, most of which by now are bought and accounted for.

Just a blind guess, but I suspect it begins with "it" and ends with "sucks."
EDIT: "the costs were outweighing the returns"? Yep, that's the financial way of saying "it sucks."

You, sir, win one (1) intarnets.

That's such a shame, though; I really liked the show. Let's hope In the Box is just as good. Maybe.....
Cordially,

I like the show, but that wins. Very well played.

I thought game shows like "Crosswords" were cheap to produce. Guess not in this case.
-
And this is what happens when they "raised" the stakes in Round 3 towards the end of the season? Give me Inside The Box anyday to ease my mind after what I just read. Sheesh!
-
Didn't Ryan go on "Inside the Box?" Does this mean us Yanks will get to see his appearance?

I suspect there are a lot of "ifs" that have to happen before that does.

No, that was Ron Jeremy ;-)

Yes. I had his episode on my site a year or two ago. I don't see why I can't upload it later today.

My favorite part of this story was the mention that stations were being offered a special "best of" Crosswords. Hmmmm, talk about a short list.

It's the episodes where Ty says "Here's your next clue...".

That's especially lovely for any double-run stations. "You know how you've had the same three months of reruns playing over and over and over this whole year? Here's a subset of those that you can run into the ground even faster!"

* A fair game that rewards the best player throughout the entire episode
* Clever gameplay
* Material that almost anyone who's ever turned on a telly can play along with
* A host who knows his craft and is allowed to say more than what's on his TelePrompTer.
Four-nil: Teh Box.

For those who have seen it, how much CanCon does it have? Would you need deep Little Mosque on the Prairie knowledge or be able to rattle of key Street Legal plot points?

From the episode I saw, the TV shows in the questions all debuted in the U.S.
/Is it C.S.I.?
//Sorry, we were looking for DaVinci's Inquest! DaVinci's...Inquest...

"Did it premiere in the 80s?" "Is the action mainly in a hospital?" "Does it star thus-and-so?" and so on. I think the host might have satisfied CanCon just by himself, I recognized all of the Mystery Subjects once they were revealed.

So all my late-night Corner Gas viewing is not going to help?

I do believe that this is the first time I've had my name mentioned in conjunction with Ron Jeremy, so thanks (?) Mr. West :)
To Mike and the others - there is no "Canadian Content" persay in the questioning line, all of the TV show references are American. While this is a weird way to get the show on the air in the states, I do hope you enjoy the format!
Ryan :)

Another article that says pretty much the same thing...but does mention that the "DaytimePlus" block will be in the fall with "Inside The Box".

And just for some info, Inside the Box is from the producer of the 70s Canadian hit, The Mad Dash

Now if we could get The Mad Dash five days a week on these shores, I'd be very pleased.

Sadly, The Mad Dash only has 14 episodes that exist, as I have been told first hand...

Well then, let's get some new ones produced.
Bring back Pierre and Nick and that awesome music!
Plus, a million dollar payoff. No, a billion. My, spending other people's money is fun.
Who owns the rights to Dash? Let's get this show on and in the USA.

OT, but while I was looking for an appropriate Youtube video of Alex Trebek lecturing a contestant about how they need to learn more about Canada, I found that the Malcolm (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v25NjhuqEso\") pilot (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubxdDNt6yjU\") is available on Youtube, as well as a vintage High Rollers clip with this frightening photo:

Yes, they moved it, hadn't you heard?
Nope, that was a wild goof on my part. Silly me thought for a moment that the show was produced in the UK, even though the words "Canadian hit" were in an earlier post and I know Ryan's from Canada. Tie a balloon to my head.

Since I included a link to the photo, I presume you want a link to the Youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhHkJ1_YEDw (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhHkJ1_YEDw\")
Edit: Apologies for not mentioning it when I first posted, since I wasn't interested in a High Rollers clip, and didn't watch it, only commenting on the thumbnail image provided by Youtube. But this is actually a montage.

Yes, thanks. Sadly, I thought it was a real clip, not one of those idiotic slideshow movies. But thanks anyhow.
