Title: Question about Larissa
Post by: gamed121683 on May 27, 2008, 07:37:55 PM
I'm watching "Jeopardy!" right now as I type this. At the top of the show, Alex mentions that she could be the show's 3rd all time money winner of she wins tonight. However, I believe she'll make history another way. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if she win's tonight's game, will she also be the first female to win "Jeopardy!" for more than five days?

I want to say there was a female contestant that made it either 6 or 7..name doesn't come to me and it's not easily found in the J! Archive, it seems....

I believe the only woman to play more than five days was Maria Wenglinsky (sp?). She won five games, but lost her sixth,if I remember correctly.

Several women have played a 6th game and lost, including Cathy Lanctot and Lisa Klink

(looking at his watch)

Isn't it about time Zach offered Larissa a cigar, my dear?

I don't frequent the J! message boards, so please, someone, advise. Thank you.

A more interesting question: Has anyone else gotten 6 Final Jeopardys in a row correct?

Do you mean in regulation play? I think Chuck Forrest got his five regular FJ's and at least his first ToC FJ correct.

I'm pretty sure Ken Jennings got 74 in a row.

I'm pretty sure you misread the question, or really don't have any concept of what Ken actually did or how Jeopardy actually works.  Ken missed plenty of Final Jeopardy clues, but they were in situations where he already had a lock game or everybody else missed too.  He got most of them right, of course, and may very well have gotten six in a row at some point, but he certainly didn't get anywhere close to 74.

I guess this is as good a place to ask a basic Jeopardy! question as any. Larissa had $222+K going into her 7th game where she finished third. Does she get the $1000 third place money for that show? Will she be in the record books for $222K or $223K?

The J! site (http://\"http://jeopardy.com/showguide_50kwinners.php\") puts her at 222 (and Ken at 2520), but champs do get the consolation money when they lose.

USA TODAY and other media outlets are misreporting that Larissa is the third-highest money winner in the history of Jeopardy.  Her $223K (and yes, she does get consolation money) ranks her as third all-time for regular-season play, but she's probably not even in the top twenty all-time when tournaments are considered.  Of course, she hasn't played in any tournaments yet, but it's also true that a whole lot of people might have had regular totals higher than hers had they been allowed to compete for more than five days before being retired.

I'm sure her 1099 has 223K!
