Title: The Onion (5/15/08) Crossword Puzzle

The print edition of The Onion's crossword puzzle uses unusual answers from a certain classic quiz show. In fact, the name of that quiz show is the answer to 60 Across!

Add: Good catch, Robert. I searched for it in vain.

And I thought it was brilliant when I picked up my copy and checked it out. The clue for each one is the actual question asked. The solution is the stupid answer given by the contestant. It's a testament to the mass saturation of blooper specials when the writer could concoct this and seriously believe that readers would have a fair shot at it.

/can honestly say that's the first time I've written 17-Across into a puzzle

No, the crossing at 28-Down and 34-Across, actually. Darn your sports references, Hinman!

Ah, I knew 34-Across for absolute certain, and the other two across clues for 28-Down were easy, so I never had to deal with it directly.

Overall it was a surprisingly tough puzzle for one that runs in a free alternative weekly.

I find that it almost always is.  (Can a Mackey confirm that it's not a creampuff?)  Frequently, too, there're clues (and/or answers) that are a little risque for a mainstream publication.

The Onion puzzle is supervised by a guy named Ben Tausig who is noted for very edgy cluing and words you wouldn't find in your mainstream puzzle.
