Back in the day (1983?) when I was learning to program BASIC, I discovered a book at my library titled "More BASIC Computer Games". This was at a time when entire working programs could be transcribed onto three or four book pages.
I remember one game fondly: "Dealer x 5", which was a take-off on the Jack Clark show "Dealer's Choice" -- it even made mention of the show in the book.
Someone has taken time to scan the entire book (and its predecessor) and posted the results on the AtariArchives site:
"Dealer x 5" from More BASIC Computer Games (http://\"http://www.atariarchives.org/morebasicgames/showpage.php?page=44\")
Enjoy!

Holy Smokes! I remember this book! What a find! :)

I had an app for my Apple II that was a BASIC-based reworking of the board game Gambler (http://\"http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/4123\"). Not QUITE a game-show, but it very much had game-show trappings, especially when I tweaked the code a little to make game selection (you stopped a cursor randomly on a game a la PYL) a little less drawn out.
Sigh. I miss Gambler.
-
Now THIS is something cool. BASIC was the only computer language I ever learned. I was pretty good at it too, but went in a different direction for a career. I think this deserves a mention on the Game Show Home Game Home Page.

Good Lord, I remember that...in fact, I think I had two different versions of it.
I'd love to get my hands on that thing again.

I threw this book away last summer. Didn't notice the game, though. Oh well, whoever still has the book just noticed it's value slightly increase.

A cursory check of Ebay (http://\"http://search.ebay.com/gambler-board-game_W0QQfrppZ50QQfsopZ1QQmaxrecordsreturnedZ300\") confirms that there were indeed two different versions (I had the later one) and that it's not exactly hard to pick up. I'd think about if if my recent and upcoming video game purchases weren't so excessive. :)

Interesting that Parker Brothers had a game about gambling at about the same time that a different company had a game based on Dealer's Choice -- which they couldn't CALL Dealer's Choice, because of a different Parker Brothers game that had nothing to do with gambling.

I was wondering why that would be on eBay...then I realized you were still talking about the board game. :) I had two different versions of the computer game.
I think I'll pass on the Gambler's Pork & Beans, though...

Ah yes, I see now. Yeah, the Apple game I had was called "Casino", I think.
"Gambler's Pork and Beans" is a slightly different definition of "gambler," I think. :)

I also had the 1977 Gambler board game as well...I pitched the game out last year in our most recent move (more tape than cardboard on the box) but I held on to the dice-roller-paddle-thingy -- which can double as a Yahtzee-on-a-stick game.
-
I stopped by my parent's house last week on a trip through Delaware,
and found my old board games, including a copy of Gambler in reasonably
good condition. Excellent game.
I loved that dice shaker, too. How would one utilize that for Yahtzee on a stick, as suggested above? It's not like you can reach in and grab the dice..

Unless you had a rule like "The N rightmost dice are the frozen ones and don't count," but there was a perfectly serviceable travel Yahtzee thing where you would "roll" the dice around in their little compartments, and push up on a flap underneath to "freeze" them.

If by "perfectly servicable" you mean "dog-ball slurping," then sure. I had that, and it was horrifyingly unfunctional.
It's Yahtzee. Want it to be Travel Yahtzee? Stick the five dice in a freakin' Crown Royal bag. Voila. Travel Yahtzee. :)

Here is how I did it back in the day:
Example:
Roll #1, Play the first 5 dice (reading bottom to top) show 2,2,4,2,6...I elect to keep the 2's.
Roll #2 & 3, I covered up the 3 bottom dice with my hand and play the 4th & 5th dice in the handle, electing to "keep" or "pass" on the remaining dice.
I never counted the 6th die, unless we played "Wild Card" Yahtzee.
Remembering what I "kept", I'd mark down the score(s) in the appropriate column(s).
Obviously, there was a little more "memory" involved versus the traditional game where you just took dice out of play and only roll the remaining one(s), but the trade-off was that the dice never got loose in the car -- Only the pen/pencil every once in a while!
-
On the show, did each die have a spade, or just one of the dice?

The great thing about being a gamer geek is that there is *always* a reason to pick up some Crown Royal. :)

I found the Travel Yahtzee roller to be fine . . . except when it eventually broke. Or when you got one that wouldn't lock solidly. But it doubled as a stress reliever, so I still liked it.

I once witnessed a game of Monopoly played in a car, using nothing but the subscription card from a random magazine, a pencil, and a TI-83. I was the banker.
...I don't think I ever got the urge to play anything in the back seat of a car again for a good five or six years.

Well, I (along with one or two others) embarrassingly have the board and most of the property values memorized, so that's how we knew all that. We kept track of everyone's cash and properties on the card, and rolled our dice with a good old RANDINT(1,6) function. For Chance/Community Chest, we just asked someone in the front seat to name a card, and that's what the person 'drew'.

I can attest to having about 95% of Monopoly minutiae memorized as well. I have no idea why I know all of it so well.

Exactly. This comes into play even more if you frequent Trivial Pursuit, because Uncle Jim Bob will roll a 4 and before he can even begin his beard-stroking survey of the board, you go "there's a roll again..."

This truly frightens me. Not that Mark is able to do that, but that this chick is surprised and irritated by it.
When she rolls and moves, she counts out the individual spaces, doesn't she?

It's amazing how many people don't know that when you're bouncing around the hub, you have your pick of the litter in terms of questions so long as you don't come out on the same spoke you came in on.
