Title: Ben Stein ain't no monkey
Post by: uncamark on April 17, 2008, 03:04:55 PM
The host of "Win Ben Stein's Money" has decided that he wants to be the right-wing Michael Moore.  He co-wrote and stars in "Expelled:  No Intelligence Allowed," a documentary about the hostility of many on the scientific and educational community to the teaching of so-called "intelligent design," a theory that tries to make a scientific argument for evolution.  It opens tomorrow in most major cities:

Box Office Guru doesn't say how many screens it will open on, although we can assume that it'll be a lot less than "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."  The Lippard blog  (http://\"http://lippard.blogspot.com/2008/03/is-expelled-going-to-show-up-in-any.html\") estimates that it will be on over 1,000 screens (scroll down).  Also, for the most part critics have not been shown the film, with the exception of Variety and a few bloggers--it has  been shown generally to friendly audiences and the newspaper ads for the film contain quotes from conservative columnist Joseph Farah and comedian Rush Limbaugh.  However, Rotten Tomatoes (http://\"http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/expelled_no_intelligence_allowed/\") shows that a few critics have seen it--the only favorable review so far is from comingsoon.net and even the NY Post has panned it.

Lippard also points to a site called "Expelled Exposed," (http://\"http://www.expelledexposed.com/\"), set up by the National Center for Science Education to debunk some of the claims the film makes.

I know leave you on your own.

TIME Magazine (http://\"http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1729703,00.html\") also has a less-than-complimentary review.  I heard Ben on a conservative rado talk show (Laura Ingraham, I think) earlier this week, and he said the movie would be released on 1100 screens, pretty good for an independent documentary.

Actually, the following page has endorsements of Ben Stein's film from several reviewers (scroll toward the bottom):

And the other film Mark mentioned is Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

To retain even the slightest bit of objectivity, let's remember that there is a huge differece between 'endorsements' as found on that site and professional reviews from film critics.  (Though Kirk Cameron references are always nice.)  I'm sure many people from both sides of the debate are weighing in on the merits of the arguments presented based on their own personal POVs.

They should have called it "When Ben Stein's Monkey".
