my question is if he after he said R he did some quick thinking and said A would he have been ruled correct

Yes; I saw a contestant do that very thing and get credit.
(And yes, it smells quite bad.)

When the rules are reviewed prior to taping, contestants are told that only the spelling matters. They are given the example "If the clue is 'feline', and you respond 'Dog, C-A-T', then you will be ruled as being correct."
