Title: Now let's get to the cards (and applaud?)
Post by: Card Shark on January 11, 2008, 05:48:27 AM
Each day on Perry CS, at the top of the show, as most of us know, he'd say, "let's open the board and get to the cards." As the board is revealed, you hear the audience clapping and the audience sweetened applause. What exactly are they applauding? The cards? The board? Or the lovely card dealers that enter at that time? He does the same thing at the money cards. I never quite understood the point.

Do I sense a thread of rhetorical questions?

If so, what was the point of the first round of Body Language?

To give the audience extra time to get liquored up before the part of the game that actually mattered.

/It's 5 o'clock somewhere...

It would seem quite awkward without the applause.

I think it's just highlighting the transition from one round to another, but like Doug said, it would look kinda awkward. Come to think of it, a few shows used applause during the transition from main game to bonus round...

Why do people applaud the prizes on "The Price Is Right"? Because they're there. And the cards are there, and they're enormous.

Why, in the finals round of "Now You See It," does Jack say "now you don't" and they turn off the board for about, oh, five seconds so they can just turn it on again?

That at least makes more sense--as a contestant the natural instinct might be to start studying the board and tune Jack out.

The goofy thing is, though, he goes over the rules before they swing the board around.

You sure about that?  Seems to me the board swings around, then he tells the contestants "we'll play until we hear our 'time's up' signal yadda yadda yadda."

I'll check out my tape of last night's proceedings when I get home tonight (it'll be late--I have theatre tix).  If I'm wrong, I'll humbly defer.

Because why say "Now you see it" if you're not going to follow it up with "...Now you don't"?

We're both right.  Narz does describe the rules before bringing on the board, but then after the board is unlit he goes into the "we'll play until we hear our 'time's up' signal yadda yadda yadda" spiel.

So perhaps it would have been better served to bring on the board, have Jack fully explain the rules and then mention the "time's up" signal and so forth, then relight the board and have the contestants have at it.

I'll warm up the DeLorean.  :)

Continuing the rhetorical ranting, why do so many game shows find it necessary to applaud the fact that they managed to successfully return from a commercial break?

"Yay, our lights are still on and the switcher works!  Good for us!"

It's not just game shows, either--on the late-night shows they're applauding Paul/Kevin/Max/Cibo (?) and the band *before the band stops playing.*

I suspect that it's a holdover from the days of single sponsorship, when it was thought to be a good idea to have the audience applaud the word from our sponsor at its completion, especially if it was a live pitch in the studio.

Otherwise, a lot of the time it's just a miniature game show version of Hal Gurnee's Network Time-Killers, especially on "DOND," where they cue the audience EVERY FRIGGIN' TIME Howie says "$1 million."

I seem to recall that on "Feud," they applauded over the crossovers because Dawson didn't want to hear that music.  I seem to recall in his crankier moments, if audio forgot to fade out the music before the applause stopped and Dawson heard as much as one note, he would stop and chew out audio (and it would make it on air).

Just 14 hours ago I fielded this exact question from an audience member at a BIG SPIN taping. I said that the applause was because we were thrilled that we were not cancelled during the commercial break. Actually we were applauding in appreciation that the stage manager could successfully count backwards from five.  ;-)

In reality, I think it's more about building some momentum. As for applauding the movement of set pieces, Johnny O exlained to me that it's about covering what would otherwise be awkward moments of silence.

I've honestly wondered why they cue (canned) applause for when all three spoilers come back into the game on M.G.'s Crosswords. Hooray mediocrity!

I dimly remember one instance where Richard stated on air how much he disliked the music.  He then asked Howard what kind of fly-by-night operation composed the music for the show.  You could faintly hear Howard say "Score Productions," but either ABC or GSN dubbed "fly-by-night" over "Score" when Richard repeated it.

ABC or (even G-T) did that.  The only thing GSN does to the shows is put the time code markings that make possible cuing up past fee plugs and contestant plugs and cutting off fee plugs during credits.  The shows themselves stay as they received them.

The new president has done some nice things (Tic Tac Dough returning to the schedule is one of them).  I hope eventually this practice will stop.  I don't mind the squeezeback to run a promo, and I realize it's a reality in today's world, but bring it back forward once the promo is over.  Cutting off credits/plugs mid-way through (even if in a small box) and moving straight to the next show looks very unprofessional to me.

Exactly!  Look at the early Barker TPiR episodes.  Applause (live or canned) was either sparse or non-existent when the first 4 contestants first stood up before coming on down as well when the IUFB first came out.  It really did sound awkward!

I can remember way back in the latter half of the 70's, when either indies WKBD-TV 50 and/or WXON/TV-20 in Detroit had fun with the proverbial meat cleaver:

Not only did they eliminate the closing credits from most of the afternoon sitcom reruns, they also hacked 2 to 3 minutes off of 6 or 7-minute Bugs Bunny/Warner Brothers cartoons.  And mind you this was well before the cry from the anti-violence people demanding that anvils and gunshots be edited from WB cartoons.

That's happened on occasion on other shows.  An '80s Tattletales that GSN aired has canned applause during the credits...and a closing shot of the audience just sitting there.

Ouch...

It seemed like frequently on "Tattletales," the camera that shot the panel and Bert's profile would pull out before the last break and we'd hear applause, but from the backs of the Bananas Section it didn't look like they were applauding.

(God, I hope they were applauding if they won.)
