Title: Nick GAS off Dec. 31
Post by: uncamark on December 17, 2007, 06:11:50 PM
Those of you who want to record those things--The Hollywood Reporter says that Nick GAS will come to an end on cable at 6 a.m. ET Mon. Dec. 31, as The N moves over from Noggin and becomes a 24/7 operation, with a new logo and some programming not seen on the channel before:

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/conten...b12462d11addc15 (http://\"http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3id192e882e824aeba0b12462d11addc15\")

That evening, Noggin will officially go 24/7, while GAS becomes a channel on Nick's TurboNick broadband site.

Has there been any indication on GAS yet (or Noggin or The N, for that matter) about the upcoming changes?

Not that I saw, but I was using it as go-to-sleep background, and they were still playing the same tired promos (in fact, they're mailing it in, I've seen the EXACT SAME tired promos the last few nights) they always have.

This explains my curiosity, though, as I thought this switch had already happened and I was honestly surprised to find GAS when I flipped to it.

The N is promoting its change to a 24/7 format and has been for a couple of weeks. They're going to have some special 24-hr interstitial programming on Dec. 31 to celebrate.

Have they been saying anything like "if you have Nick GAS, you'll have The N on Dec. 31--if you don't, have your parents call your cable company or satellite provider..."?  It would seem to me that when you're making this big a move of a channel, it better be made as clear as possible.

DirecTV, which doesn't carry Nick GAS, included a note in their most recent e-mail newsletter that Noggin and The N were both becoming 24-hour channels.  Curious about what the channel number(s) were going to be, I clicked the link -- but it only led to this page (http://\"http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/packProg/channelChart1.jsp?assetId=1000005\"), the channel listing for their El Cheapo "Family" package, which provided me no useful information.

Someone at The N message board - was there looking for schedules - says it will be on channel 303 on DirecTV.

The only thing I'd probably go out of my way to watch on The N is "That '70s Show", which is coming in June. Otherwise, I hope the children enjoy their new offerings and concurrently thank the Lord above that they don't have to watch the billionth rerun of "Legends of the Hidden Temple".

Just in case anyone's curious, here's the launch schedule for The N: Link (http://\"http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=3740795&postcount=1\"). Growing Pains is the only show on there that sounds even *remotely* interesting, and it'll be gone in a week most likely.

And I wonder how long "Zoey 101" will be on the schedule, considering that its star did something her more famous sister would be expected to do just recently.

So, if the channel was supposed to sign off at 6 AM this morning....why is it that when I turned my TV past GAS' long time Dish Network channel position just now..there was Nick GAS, airing Figure It Out?

EDIT: According to Wiki (gallon of salt, and all that) there were some problems in the changeover, and as a result the automated GAS feed is still going out to Dish Network subscribers only.

I was gonna say, I was up at 3:00a Pacific (don't ask...) and the change to The N on Comcast happened right on schedule.

It'd be cool if someone who gets Nick GAS could put video of the transition on YouTube.

It was _completely_ unspectacular. (As you would expect from a channel that's been phoning it in for the last two years at least.) Figure It Out ended, they ran a bumper (I think for N...I was trying to fall asleep at the time), and N programming started with some tweener soap operaish thing.

/hopes Nadine has another gig lined up

Depending on who you ask, the point at which GAS will be shut off for good for those of us on Dish Network seems to vary between "in about 30 minutes" to "about a day from now" to "end of the month" to "never", and just about every calendar point between now and Smarch 32nd.  More than a lot of things, *no one* seems to actually know *what* the hell is going on with this.

For us Comcast folks, at least on my system, the channel was replaced on schedule. Channel 133 is now The N.

/hadn't watched in three years anyway, since Think Fast, original DD, and Finders Keepers were removed

Part of me sort of knew that there wouldn't be any fanfare.  My mind goes to the Fox Kids UK transition that's on YT... very dull.

I wonder if the Court TV/TruTV transition was any more interesting...

This is Dish Network you're talking about, mind you... not exactly a bunch of Rhodes Scholars answering their phones.

There was a 2 to 3 minute piece defining actuality, followed by a 10-second countdown leading up to Midnight with a circle dropping, counting down the seconds and changing color each second.  In the final few seconds, the Court TV logo transformed into the TruTV logo.  Nothing spectacular, but obviously a little more spirited than the Nick GaS/The N transition.

Wow...that's a really tame way to put the operations of Nick GAS.  :)
I, without hesitation, would use "completely moronic to stay on THIS long" and "pointless".  C'mon...the same *5* shows make up a channel?  If that would work, I'd love to start "Game:  The Network for Game Shows", only with Go, Whew, Cross-Wits, $ale of the Century, and Concentration.  Rights be damned.

All that aside, I never had Nick GAS (I prefer 89 octane) and I was planning on watching Legends and Double Dare 2K on broadband soon...how does someone go about watching them?

It also appears the Noggin feed is the same as before the supposed change as well; last night I turned on the channel and Zoey 101 was one despite the fact it said some kiddie show was supposed ot be on. I assumed the labels were wrong, but when I turn the same channel on again this morning, Blue's Clues in on. What?

This morning, when I stumbled out to the living room, my Tivo had a note for me that Channel 215's identifier had officially changed from "NIKGAS" to "THEN," and also has the correct guide data. Seems pretty complete around these parts.

Note:  Yesterday, it thought Get the Picture was on after a long series of "OFF AIR."

"On, January 3rd, 2008, EchoStar (owners of DISH Network) has reported that they opted out of the N's 24 hour contract, and will remain to switching from Noggin to the N at 6:00AM/6:00PM daily. Therefore, the N and Noggin are staying as one on Dish Network, and Nick GAS will be continued to be carried. This has been confirmed by EchoStar. [3]

This has also been confirmed by an online Dish Network technician (name is blocked for privacy reasons):

(03)****** *: Nick GAS is not being removed and will continue business as usual. DISH Network customers will NOT be impacted by the change for The-N/Noggin."
