Title: "Duel" host named...
Post by: weaklink75 on November 19, 2007, 01:23:05 PM
According to this USA Today blurb... (http://\"http://blogs.usatoday.com/entertainment/\")It's ESPN's Mike Greenberg (who has a little experience, as he did a couple of appearances on 2-Minute Drill)...I think it's a decent choice..

Greeny?  Oh what will he do without Golic?  This might work.....

Bleech. What's ABC's deal--every host they pick is either a bored cross-promotion possibility (although Shatner was an inspired choice) or an unknown, undistinguished British guy? Can't somebody there call up William Morris and see who they've got?

Why couldn't they have chosen Kenny Mayne? "2 Minute Drill" didn't stop him from doing his other ESPN work.

Here's the press release... (http://\"http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news.aspx?id=20071119abc01\")I think this is a good idea the way they're going with a "tournament" format for the first run...

I think Greeny is a good choice from the ABC stable. I think there a couple better choices and many, many worse choices. He's got a great voice for it.

EDIT: Every time I see Lloyd Braun's name, anywhere, I think of how much my mom wants me to be like him. Anyone else think that? That's some stigma for the guy.

Greeny said this morning on "Mike and Mike in the Morning" that five other people tried out, but he did not know who they were.

If you're referring to Ed, he also fits the Bored Cross-Promotion Possibility category (one of the "ExM:  HE" gang).  Well, not so bored.

Well, you know that Bergeron can't do everything--HE'S ONLY ONE MAN!  (Or I have got him mixed up with someone else...)

I'd actually like to see them try Samantha Harris on a game show.  Personally, I'd just like to try her.  :)

I'm here all week.

Unlike the very well publicized tryouts for another game show. Ain't it great to fly under the radar, Greeny?

As absolutely shocking as this might sound, maybe - JUST maybe - they actually hired Greeny because of the folks who auditioned, he was the best man for the job.

Nah, couldn't be.

When Season 1 comes out on DVD, it might be cool to have the audition tapes of the other five host candidates as an extra. :)

It wouldn't be hard to come up with five people who could audition worse than Mike Greenburg. The point is that it wouldn't be hard to find at least one person who would audition better. By being likable or amusing, for example.

QFT.  Way back in the college days when I interned at CLTV, Greeny was weekend sports there.  Believe me, he has personality and I hope he does well.

ObChicagoBroadcasting:  Odd to see how he and his co-worker, Rob Goldman, traveled two different paths from that job.

Yep, while Greeny took the road to national recognition in Bristol, Rob Goldman took the road up to a Waukegan apartment complex to meet a 15-year-old girl for, er, "things."  Unfortunately for Rob, the girl was actually a Lake County Detective, and there went the ol' career.  Whoopsies!

Well, yeah. (He's also on SportsCenter.) I'm not sentencing him to the chair, I'm simply expressing doubt as part of making conversation.

Is he going to change his whole personality to do the game show? I wouldn't think so. If he had any charm, I would think it would have come out. But if "Duel" is a good game, though, I'd love to be proven wrong.

I like Greeny's personality fine, but from what I understand about this show, it sounds like it'll be a somewhat serious affair, requiring more of his newscaster persona rather than his talk show one. I see it being a similar role to Pat Kiernan's on "Studio 7"/"Grand Slam" or Magnus Magnusson on "Mastermind".

You're right. One point, though, is that Howie and Saget weren't on top of the heap when they moved to game shows. Greenburg, as ESPN golden boy, may not have the same motivation.

The promos have been running for a couple of weeks now (I first saw them on "Dancing" a couple of weeks ago).  However, they weren't much more than a logo and voice-overs of "contestants" bragging.  Are they now showing actual clips?

Not really. Berman is proud of his local tv heratage, which started at the NBC affil here. He really just doesn't want to leave CT.

And, he's a nice guy. Super nice. One of my greatest 'brush with greatness' stories is, last year, at a PGA tour stop here in Hartford, he was giving a kid an autograph when I walked by. He looked up and said to the kid "Well, 'hes' the weatherman, why don't you ask him if it's going to rain''?

Berman watches 'me'. That's friggin cool.

Back in summer-2003, I read ESPN: The Uncensored History, and it's a very fascinating book (as is The Big Show). One story that immediately comes to mind is a former boxing commentator (Sal something or other), who basically told the network to commit a vulgar action upon themselves. His closing remarks on-air was "Happiness is Bristol in my rear-view mirror." As a result, any time an employee left, fellow co-workers threw "rear-view mirror parties". :-)

That was early-80s, so I wonder how much changed...

In the last few minutes of "Mike and Mike" today, Greeny started talking about Duel...specifically da Perf's interview with Wink Martindale, in which Wink has nothing but great praise for Greeny.  He also said that during next week's programs they're going to try and talk about the show and its format a little more.

And for anyone who cares, Golic's favorite game is Pyramid, and Greeny kept referencing Tic Tac Dough.

The official site has been updated... (http://\"http://abc.go.com/primetime/duel/index?pn=index\") they have the bios of all the possible players up (not all are going to make it on of course-they're only saying at least 3 games a show, possibly more, and the last ep is the playoff)...I have to think, if they get on, "The Internet Censor" (don't worry Perf-they give their full names as well), "The Student", and "The Used Car Salesman" have a bit of an edge...I like the set too...

In Chicago WLS' schedule still shows "Duel" as an hour on Tuesday morning after Kimmel and "Samantha," "Underbelly" and "October Road" on Wednesday morning after Kimmel, thanks to the Bears on "Monday Night Football."

However, ABC's own site now shows "Duel" at 90 minutes, "Samantha" pre-empted and "Underbelly" and "October Road" unchanged (I'll assume WLS will still run them on Wednesday morning).

Unless ABC's got more episodes of "Underbelly" than it does of "Samantha," hell if I know why they'd pre-empt their most popular new half-hour (even if it took a beating without that sweet "Dancing" lead-in).  And unless "Clash of the Choirs" is going 90 minutes Monday night, hell if I'd know why they'd extend "Duel" to 90 minutes.

(Oh, "Clash" is two hours Monday night--what, can't Gail and Lloyd get yet another half-hour of stalling together instead of having to show the nation Glad Girl at 9:30?)
