Title: Match Game DVD set for $4.99+ S/H
Post by: catnap1972 on October 06, 2007, 08:28:49 PM
Hope I don't get slapped with the wet noodle for breaking the "no commercial posts" rule, but I saw a post on Slickdeals where Family Video has a one-day only sale on the Match Game DVD set.  Shows up on site for $9.99, but you can use code "NEWPGMEM", "NEWGWMEM" or "NEWMEM5F" to knock $5.00 off, bringing it down to $4.99.  Shipping appears to be .99 via USPS Media Mail.

NICE.

I don't see where there would be smackdown...there is a world of difference between "I'm selling..." and "Hey, here's where you can get this for way way cheap..." I appreciate the heads-up!

Anyhow, I can verify that it all works just as catnap1972 posted...so if the MG set wasn't worth $25 or $30 or whatever it was to you, but it's worth $5.97 shipped to your door, jump on this!

I just went there, set myself up as a new customer and placed my order.  Thanks so much for your post, catnap!  Now I can see the 1962 pilot, plus, hopefully, some pre-1975 appearances on the CBS show by JoAnne Worley.  Even if she's not there, it's still the Best Of, so it should be worth it for six bucks.

I'm thinking it's worth six bones as a game-show geek collectible even if I never took it out of the shrinkwrap. :)

Amazing super nice.  I've looked at the set every time I've visited my local Best Buy, but never pulled the trigger.  But six bucks and it shows up in your mailbox?  Holy cow.  Thanks, catnap!

I echo the sentiments already stated. As Matt said, this was something that looked neat, but I ultimately went "I can see this on GSN every day, and all I'm missing out on is fee plugs." But for $5? Daaaaaamn.

On a semi-related note, not to be one of those Barkerphiles or what have you, but I see myself paying full price for the TPIR set if the episode choice is varied enough. Same goes for the "Feud" set talked about that isn't just all-star shows. The pilot in DVD quality? Oh hells yeah.

Hey, as long as we're on the topic, can someone who had problems with this set post exactly what those problems were, so those of us who ordered these can check when ours show up to see if we need to pester DCI for a replacement set? Thanks!

I dunno, now that I know that these guys exist, I think I'm willing to wait to see if I can get Six-Buck Specials on those, too. :)

Disc 4 was defective.

Photo Gallery wouldn't load, Best MG Moments wouldn't load, 1962 pilot skipped all throughout and was very glitchy, most episodes started to skip partway-through, tribute to Gene skipped throughout.

I've heard a few times that one or two episodes on Disc 3 were glitchy too, but that wasn't the case with mine.

I can think of two off the top of my head:

- The badly pressed disc 4
- The one episode that has the audio sync issue (not sure which one, offhand)

On disc 1, the 10/2/1976 episode with Avery Schreiber, Brett Somers, Charles Nelson Reilly, Nancy Kulp, Richard Dawson, and Joyce Bulifant.

I've always kind of wanted it, but like others have said, I can see this stuff everyday. However, $6 is def worth it. Thank you again!

I signed up for this company's "Steal of the Day" information, plus I looked at the choices for the past month or so.  It seems that typically, the discount isn't nearly as steep as it was for the Match Game set.  Usually, it's just a few dollars off on a single disc, but even when they do multi-disc sets, the discount is usually no more than 30% or so, not the amazing 70% cut for MG.  Looks like this was an exceptional deal all around.

I'm not trying to make bwood or anyone else here feel bad, but mine did come today.  I'll let you know about the quality of Disc 4 and the pilot when I get time to watch them.  It also includes a coupon for a free ticket to The Price Is Right Live!...which expired last February.  Maybe I'll give that to Dumb Dora and see if she packs her bags.

I just watched the 1962 pilot and the special features on Disc 4 (no actual shows yet).  They all played perfectly.  As I found with other discs I got (not MG-related) there are those occasional DVD players that might not handle certain discs as well, generally cheaper ones (my Hitachi big screen HD actually has one built in), but My Pannie HDD/DVD recorder/player handles everything nicely.

Thank you, sir, for the update. Panasonic makes good stuff these days...their HDTV's come highly recommended, too.

(Anyone try them in an Xbox 360? That will be my playback platform, for now...)

Just a bump...my copy of this arrived yesterday, and Disc 4 seems to be okay, based on the reports I've seen here of what can be wrong with it. So I'm awfully happy!

(If you haven't gotten yours yet, you might want to give them a nudge...I think my order fell through the cracks because of the backorder, and I had to pester them to get confirmation that it shipped.)

I have a feeling they may be regretting that particular sale.  I signed up for their daily "steal" expecting at least occasionally similar bargains, and routinely, its $10 discs that they're selling for the low-low-low price of $6.  They probably lost money selling a $35 MSRP set for $5, especially if they had to reorder, because I'm sure the manufacturer wasn't offering that much of a discount.

I'm guessing they did, too, which is exactly why I nudged them, because I'm sure they would have been completely content with me canceling the order.

Actually, the first time I nudged them, I said "hey, you told me this was backordered, I haven't heard boo, can you tell me what's going on?" They sent me back the exact same form letter they sent me the first time. I then replied explaining that I'd already received that, wanted more specific information, and did they even read my first missive, and the next day I got the "this has shipped" notice. I suspect it might have remained in Backorder Limbo for quite a while had I not pushed.

Looking at this thread, I'm surprised that the company didn't cancel the order. It's completely within their right to do that, AFAIK.

Amazon, Staples, all the larger web stores cancel orders and send "too bad" emails all the time. Amazon sends out $5 gift certificates with their apology email sometimes. One time I had ordered a Christmas gift that they weren't able to deliver because of a back order situation, and I raised a fuss and they sent $20 my way.

I'm surprised at that too. Surprised and delighted, mind you, but still surprised.

They can also afford to discount the (comparatively minimal) bad PR that that gets them. Based on the website, I'm gonna guess Family Video isn't at that point yet.

And Amazon, in all their glory, knows full well that there are very few people who, armed with a $5 GC for their site, will spend only $5. (Or for that matter, $20.) So yeah, it's a giveaway on their part, but it's going to someone who might not have bought something again from them, and those suckers probably get redeemed pretty fast.

Anyway, Family Video, live and learn I guess.

Absolutely. (See iPhone, Early Sucker Rebate.)

I'm not suggesting I wouldn't do business with Family Video again. (If they'd cancelled the order, that would be a different matter entirely.) But I'll take the heel-dragging into account, and I don't think I would order something from them that might have any sort of a scarcity, like a preorder for a video game or anything...

Interesting contrast here:

Yesterday, meritline.com advertised a 4GB MicroSD card for $20. (They're usually in the $50 neighborhood.) I ordered one. Today, their website tells me the order has been cancelled as they are "sold out". Couple hundred posts about this on SlickDeals, and not ONE has mentioned that their's shipped; they just cancelled them all when they realize they screwed up the price.

That's meritline.com. Don't do business with them. Ever.

Late followup: After having received numerous emails with various versions of "we don't have any and we don't know when we're ever going to get any," I finally called FamilyVideo this week.  A representative told me that they hadn't gotten any in since the original offer... and since I knew that that wasn't true based on the stories told here (and told her so), I asked to speak with a supervisor.  When the representative tried to talk me out of speaking with a supervisor, I offered to refer the matter to the state's attorney general and let that office sort it out.  She relented, and put me through to the supervisor -- who said "I just happen to have one of those sets sitting here on my desk" and promptly sent it to me.

I can deal with delays but not lies.  Do I think it's emblematic of the whole company?  No, but I'd also give it a lot of thought before considering another order.

I will point out one place where their ineptitude worked in my favor: they never charged my credit card for the thing, despite me CALLING THEM and TELLING THEM that I hadn't been charged. They claimed their records showed I had been, which probably means some other poor schmuck got charged for it and never noticed. After all of that, I didn't feel particularly inclined to insist.
