Title: Maybe Game Shows are doomed...
Post by: mmb5 on September 20, 2007, 01:34:00 PM
I had a friend who was involved in a Millionaire taping today.  The guest host...Billy Bush.

Now now, he may be okay.

I'll work on the Go/Whew GSF bunker, though.  Better safe than sorry.

Let's give the guy a chance before passing judgement.  Some formats are better suited for certian emcees. ;-)  (although Regis is still best at this show, IMHO).

Why Billy Bush? They had a perfectly good other candidate for the 'host of a entertainment nightly show to fill in for Millionaire'. Someday we'll see Pat O'Brien fill in for Meridith.

//He's just too great not to fill that chair.

I saw about two minutes of Deal03 (literally...on YouTube). What was so bad about him?

I mean that honestly...I didn't see enough of him to pass judgment.

"Show Me the Money" has come and gone, and you're just now posting that game shows are doomed?

I'd be more concerned about the picketing Temptation writers than Billy Bush hosting.

That doesn't really concern me (other than my support in solidarity of their current situation) since Temptation dying at this point would be a mercy killing.

At this point I'm losing faith in the show, esp. since it appears it'll prolly get canceled, even if it DOES improve.

Would love to see Fremantle offer a deal where any time a show doesn't make it through the season, they have another one in the wings. I think Telepictures did the same thing in the mid-80s.

However, at this point, I expect WTVZ to replace the show with "Mad About You" or "Nanny" reruns this spring...

I don't hold out much hope for its renewal, and it certainly has its faults, but I'd still rather see Temptation on than another court show. Or Howie's show.

I didn't think Billy Bush was that bad at LMAD either. Whenever I've seen him somewhere else he sure is annoying, especially with celebrities he's pretending to be pals with, but he wasn't so bad at LMAD.

Gosh, does that Zoloft ever work swell!

Well as long as this is an isolated incident, I too believe it's a non-issue.  I think the probability is low, but if this helps to spark other GS writers to walk, then there really is need for concern.

The problem wasn't so much Bush, it was that the producers decided to be less family-friendly.  Deal #1 on the first show had a lady reach under men's grass skirts.  This stunt cost the show lots of viewers.

Billy Bush could be a decent game show host, but you can't throw a rookie into one of the most difficult formats to do well. "Deal" requires tons of ad-lib skills and a complete understanding of every possible scenario that could play out, and it was ridiculous to to think Bush could handle that.

Millionaire would be closer to his speed, but I still don't imagine the gift of gab is there yet for him.

And in the case of "Grease:  You're the One That I Want," he was just plain insufferable.  Even if the crap he had to read off the prompter didn't give him any favors, Denise Van Outen, who is much more experienced at this sort of thing, had to be wincing whenever she was off-camera.
