According to The New York Times, Nickelodeon wants Noggin (the pre-school channel) and The N (the one for tweens) to have their own channels. So, Nick GAS goes exclusively broadband:

"Nickelodeon is expected to announce today that Noggin, the daytime commercial-free preschool network, and the N, a nighttime advertising-supported network for adolescents and teenagers, will become 24-hour stand-alone networks and no longer share channel space. ....
The network will use the channel space currently occupied by Nickelodeon’s Games and Sports, which will become a broadband channel and may align itself more closely with local community sports."

End of a fun era...sad, but not a surprise at all. I'm astonished that Viacom hadn't done this sooner.

With the lack of great shows like Summers' Double Dare and Finders Keepers, I can't say I'm that sad to see it leave the channel lineup. I will miss Mike O'Malley's unwarranted screaming on Guts and his mumbled expletives on Get the Picture, but it's nice to know I can still see it on the web.

To fill in the extra time it will have, the N has acquired reruns of the former Fox hit “That 70s Show,” which ABC Family is to begin running in 2008 as well.

Sarcasam noted, but there are already a number of split network deals out there--to name one, "Full House" is on ABCFAM during the day and NAN--you know. I believe "X Files" also has a split network deal.
Yeah, the end of Nick GAS was inevitable, especially considering that there haven't been any new game shows or reality comp shows from the mothership in years. Probably the only reason it stayed on for long as it did was pure lack of attention on Nick's part. And with The N already with ads, there'll be revenue on that channel the minute the move happens. It's Noggin that will have to figure out a way to put in ads without alienating parents or pressure groups. Even if PBS Kids Sprout's ads are all aimed at parents and don't interrupt the programs, there are still complaints about them.

Well, yeah, and reruns of The Cosby Show were airing on, I think, 85 different cable networks simultaneously not long ago. This just seemed more blatant for some reason -- "we're splitting the networks to compete with ABC Family, and to start off we're picking up one of the same shows they have!"

I distinctly remember that Nickelodeon itself was commercial-free at the start; later it added "this program brought to you by..." sponsor messages before certain shows (some of the messages actually used clips from the full commercials), and eventually full-blown commercials were the norm. Parents adjusted then, and they'll adjust now.

DirecTV doesn't carry GAS, so I wonder how they'll handle the split. It would also be nice for the new Noggin to bring back CTW reruns.

Can they do that? I thought Sprout had most of those rights now.

You're right. Sesame Workshop is an owner of Sprout and Noggin's rights to air back library have expired, with the exception of the "Play With Me Sesame" repackage.
And in going to noggin.com, I noticed that the channel is now branded "Nick's Noggin." I wonder if they'll eventually rename it "Nick Jr." and get it over with.

Yeah, DirecTV doesn't carry Gas, but I would be shocked to not see them carry The N with how popular Degrassi is are and whatnot.

Nick GAS was probably the only cable network on my system that had cobwebs visible from outer space. I don't think Viacom put any money into this network at all, kept running the same old stale interstitials and the same old shows over and over again. I'm glad it's at least going off so we can make room for some new program development on both The N and Noggin (reruns of "That 70's Show" not withstanding).

I'm not surprised Nick GAS is exclusively switching to its online channel. Nick GAS wasn't as good as it was when I was at my niece's house about 5 years ago. There were so many kids games that I haven't seen in years(Summers' DD, Finders Keepers & my personal fave Wild & Crazy Kids). I just wished Nickelodeon would've handled this situation much sooner.
As for rebranding Noggin as Nick Jr, does Nickelodeon still run Nick Jr during the mid-day hours? It's been awhile since I seen that. Since Nickelodeon in theory owns the brand, why not?

Really, REALLY hate to bring this one back on topic...The Multichannel News version of the article (LINK) (http://\"http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6468537.html\") says the changeover will be December 31st. The article also provides the availability number for Nick GAS. 58 Million. Only 4 million fewer households than GSN. And GAS isn't even available on DirecTV. That number kind of surprised me - I really didn't think that GAS' carriage went above 40 million.

They do, but I don't think so much in the summer...In my online guide on my cable box I've seen their cartoons (SpongeBob, etc.) running in the daytime where normally Nick Jr. would be...

[/quote]Yes. For some reason, they're airing their Nick Jr. block from 6-10AM, then airing regular Nick programming until Nick at Nite takes over. During the school season, the Nick Jr. block goes until 2pm.
I have a six-year old sister. Stop looking at me like that. :)
If the broadband version of GAS keeps "Hidden Temple" on the channel, then I'm all for it...so I can see it.

Yes...but if I'm not mistaken, doesn't Nick do that every summer? Usually when school starts Nick Jr. goes back to the 9-2 hour (at least from what I gathered).
Count me as one that is surprised GAS has lasted this long. I first got it last year with the digital cable, and now it's on the FiOS package (get it, it's good). Liked it at first, but can't stand it now.

I guess the question is when they'll start the on-air transition promos to say "Nick GAS goes online Jan. 1, The N's 24/7 right here!" I'm guessing beginning of December. They may start earlier on the mother channel in order to get a "if you have Nick GAS, you'll have The N 24/7--if you don't have Nick GAS, call your cable or satellite provider now!" campaign going.
I'll be interested how they'll handle it with Noggin--seems to me that they'll get pilloried by educational types and psychologists if they do a "Neverending Noggin" campaign, since it would hint that pre-schoolers should do nothing but watch television all day and night.
