Title: "The Great [insert country here] Singing Bee?"
Post by: uncamark on April 03, 2007, 04:55:57 PM
It's "Match Game" meets "Name That Tune" meets a spelling bee--ITV bought the show in the UK without a pilot and Gurin's doing a pilot for NBC--Variety reports:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR111796239...=1&nid=2562 (http://\"http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117962393.html?categoryid=14&cs=1&nid=2562\")

At least it's not another money-tree against the house show.

NBC, if you are reading this...

Stop wasting your time with this stuff.  Order up a pilot for "Concentration" and do things right.

How bizarre.  I wonder if the musical Spelling Bee (http://\"http://spellingbeethemusical.com/\") was any inspiration for this deal.

If I'm reading it right, sounds like there's going to be a bit of Yours For A Song and What's This Song? in there. Back we go to "Everything old is new again..."

This paragraph from the Variety article struck me as interesting....

Quote
In a highly unusual move, ITV snatched up the format rights to "Singing Bee" after seeing nothing more than an outline of the idea -- a so-called paper format. When it comes to American producers, British networks almost always demand to see a filmed pilot of a potential skein before moving forward.

Begs the question...are shows nowadays even piloted?  I'm not talking about this "a-show-we-can-put-on-first-and-pick-things-up-from-there" but true old-school "keep-em-from-air-cuz-they're-for-internal-use-only" pilots.

OT (kinda): NBC's new GS sked: DoND-Monday, This-Singing-Bee-Crap-Tuesday, Identity-Wednesday, 1vs100/Concentration-Friday (each half hours).  C'mon NBC...

/yes...I know I kinda Get It, so it won't happen.

Would love that, but this doesn't seem to be the same NBC from 20 years ago. I'm not sure if I want them Endemauling a classic.
