I wanted to let everyone know the results of my quest to find a 1958 episode of Concentration on which my father appeared. The Library of Congress has only 10 episodes from August 1958 (when the show started) to the end of 1959, which was the period during which I was guessing my dad appeared on the show. Miraculously one of those 10 episodes turned out to be an episode in which my father appeared and in fact won! I have just today heard from NBC that they are granting me a "personal use license" which will allow the Library of Congress to copy the negative. This whole entereprise is going to cost me over $1,000, but I reckon it'll be worth it to see the look on my dad's face when I fire up the DVD at his 80th birthday party in April.
Thank you to everyone on this board who contributed to my search.

That is just great to know, and what a nice way to end such a search. :)
-
Wow! Many congratulations, both to you and your father!
-
Interesting news to hear, and congratulations.
This brings to mind something that has been proposed before: Pooling together to acquire a copy of one particularly rare gem.
Hell, an episode of Concentration wouldn't be bad.
-
Wow, what awesome luck!
Congratulations, and I hope you both enjoy watching it. ^^
-
Excellent! Congratulations.
-
That is unbelievable, almost miraculous news. Congratulations!
-
Wow!!! Just unbelieveable!!! I can guarantee it'll be the surprise of your dad's life!
-
Congratulations!!!! What a treat that will be for the both of you! And please wish your dad an early happy birthday from all of us, with the hope of many more to come.
James
-
Incredible! That really put a smile on my face!
Congratulations! :-)
-
Now you can "Take One Gift" to your Dad! Congratulations to you. Happy 8-0 to Dad!
-
How thrilling it must have been for you to have actually found that very show you were looking for! We should all be so lucky to find something this elusive yet still in existance and meaningful to us. I was obliged to direct you to this group when you contacted me personally, and I am SO glad it led to your discovery of that prized episode of the show.
Tell your father Happy Birthday for me as well!
-
Congratulations -- you put in a heck of a lot of effort and I'm thrilled that it paid off for you. I hope that the bits of information we provided here and there were helpful.
Matt: should Britgirl send us a screengrab of her dad for the upper left corner? ;-)

Let me remind you that the guy who made the initial proposal (http://\"http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.game-shows/msg/3ac0e6b9f4d65e19?hl=en&\") has since been banned from this forum. That is not a threat to revoke your posting privileges as well, but merely an indication of the thought process behind the idea. ;-)
Paying a significant sum for something with significant sentimental value makes sense. This doesn't, and if you need a refresher course on the reasons, the ATGS thread should enlighten you (and provide some merriment in the process).
-
Great news! To your Dad, that's worth a million bucks.
-
I stand, applaud, and raise a can of beer in your honor. (It's empty, only because I don't feel like going downstairs.)
Eitherway, Britgirl, congratulations, again.

I am delighted, astonished and relieved about your success.
Relieved, because I still felt a little guilty about initially offering faulty information. I'd assumed your father's episode was at the Library of Congress along with all the other saved episodes of "Concentration." Well, blow me down - it turns out it was!
Astonished, because to be honest with you, I wasn't that optimistic about your chances. I would have given odds of 1 in 10 at best that you'd succeed. Glad to be wrong here.
And, of course, I'm delighted that your perseverance paid off - some of the more sensible members of this forum might have discouraged you, but you just kept plugging away, and you weren't disappointed.
Congratulations!

This is by far the happiest thing we've had happen in the 4+ years of this board's existence, and we didn't have anything to do with it!
Congratulations!
-
This is indeed great news. I'm very happy for you, BritGirl.
-
Man...I'll join in the congratulatory parade. That is incredible.
Be sure to take really good care of it!
-
Congrats, BritGirl!!!! I was hoping this day would come for ya!!!!
-
Congratulations from me too. I was hoping that it would work out for you (and your father) and lo and behold, it did. I know you both (and the rest of your family) will enjoy his birthday!
-
Late to the party here, but let me throw in my "Congratulations" for whatever that's worth!
-
As everyone else has already said, congratulations!
-
Fantastic news. Be sure and share with us his reaction.

To being reunited with his appearance - and not how much it cost to do it!
Seriously, Britgirl57, does the Library of Congress plan on making a film negative-to-video copy? (For that kind of dough, I'd expect nothing less than a 16mm print - then again, I own a 16mm projector.)
-
Awwww, you guys are so sweet. I just logged on and was amazed to see 4 whole pages of congratulations! What a lovely surprise. I promise to report back on my dad's reaction to seeing the episode - his birthday is on April 20th (same as Hitler's - ha ha!) but I'm planning on showing it at his party the next evening. I won't be back in the US till the beginning of May, whereupon I'll post a full report, I promise. He's an exuberant fellow so I imagine it should be quite a scene!
FYI - The LoC is going to produce a Betacam preservation copy from the kine negs (the pictures and sound being on separate tracks) and then make a DVD from that for me. I will then have to have that DVD transferred into the British PAL format but that's the easy part. Of course NBC still hasn't officially given the LoC permission to reproduce it yet but that's only a matter of time - NBC is sending me an invoice for the personal use rights but when I've paid that , it'll be all systems go. I assume that once the master is available at the LoC, the cost of producing another DVD would be much less, though NBC would still have to grant permission.
Thanks again to you all!

This may be the first time in the history of this forum that someone has Godwin'd a thread. She's just full of firsts. Brilliant! :)

Great. If you just spoiled the puzzle on the show she's paying a grand for, I vote you get banned immediately.
-
Once again, many many congratulations! I love hearing these kind of stories. =)
-
Holy cripes.
While not a miracle on par with curing cancer or anything, that is still pretty darn...well, miraculous. I'm really glad to hear about your unbelievably good luck.

What does "Godwin'd a thread" mean? I like to know what trails I'm blazing!

"Godwin's Law" states that as an Internet message thread gets longer, the probability of someone comparing something or someone else to Hitler or the Nazis approaches 1.
So it's been extrapolated that, in an argument, when someone commits this fatal error, the other side may invoke Godwin's Law and claim victory.
So the act of invoking Hitler is "Godwinning a thread." Don't worry, you did nothing wrong, it was a joke. :)

How funny - I did not know this. Thanks for filling me in. Not that - to clarify - I was comparing my dad with Hitler, you understand! The poor man can't help having been born on the same day as the Fuehrer!
-
Congratulations on your good fortune, Britgirl... NBC has made a very rare concession in this case, and I'm glad to see that everything worked in your favor!
