Title: Biggest game/reality show stories of 2006
Post by: johnnya2k3 on December 21, 2006, 06:49:07 PM
It's that time again when we go over what were the biggest game and reality show stories in 2006.

Of course, tops on the list would be Bob Barker hanging up the TPIR microphone after 35 years (and 50 in television). Others include...

NBC's budget cuts which led to "1 vs. 100" and "Identity" to go along with "Deal or No Deal" (now we know why they're still in fourth place)
Bob Goen's return to television with "That's The Question" on GSN
The disastrous "Gameshow Marathon" (which explained why Ricki Lake didn't get "The View" gig)
Meredith Vieira pulling double duty on "Today" and "Millionaire"
Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! in HD
A bountiful of game show clips on some little known site whose initials are YT
William Shatner pretty much better off on Boston Legal instead of doing "Show Me The Money!"
Playmania, Playmania, Playmania!
ABC's "The One" pulled after only two weeks, making Peter Mansbridge happy (the show also aired on the CBC, which bumped "The National" by an hour)
"The Amazing Race's" Emmy streak extended to 4-0
British TV personality Cat Deeley making her American debut hosting "So You Think You Can Dance"
Taylor Hicks winning that Idol show

And of course....

The plane crash outside Los Angeles that took the life of Peter Tomarken

Any others that I'm missing, or is that it?

What was disastrous? It got decent-to-good ratings, but enough for CBS to consider reviving it next year. And what's your reasoning of Ricki missing out on "The View"?

Not to mention Nancy O'Dell is pregnant (by her husband, not Pat).

Anyway, yes, I forgot to mention "The Rich List".

And Cat Deeley was an MTV UK veejay before hosting a slew of shows on BBC and ITV. She got the "So You Think You Can Dance" (think American Idol meets Dance Fever) gig after original host Lauren Sanchez got pregnant.

Rosie O'Donnell was hired before the marathon started airing.  Star Jones Reynolds was fired the day before the maration ended, and has not yet been replaced.  Assuming B follows A, in this case, seems highly speculative.

-WoF adds Wild Card to the Wheel
-Ken Jennings and Bob Harris publish books (I own the latter)
-Ken Jennings rips J! a new one
-GSN throws out some more (fairly decent) documentaries
-Game shows on DVD, including Match Game
-The rights to Millionaire get sold to 2waytraffic
-And only because it's a practical meme, Pat O'Brien got engaged

The ''separation by race'' twist on this year's edition of Survivor.  We all knew (a) it was a gimmick from Burnett and CBS to (b) get publicity for a reality series in decline.  And in the end the ratings did decline (lowest-rated season and finale night in the show's history).  But, from the moment the announcement was made until the racially divided tribes were mixed two or three episodes into the season, the amount of newspaper ink/media hype/comedy skits on late night show/discussion on talk radio/etc. this "race" twist on 'Survivor' generated was inescapable.  Hype didn't translate into better ratings though, just like internet buzz for 'Snakes on the Plane' fizzled come box office time.

One of my local cable channels is doing a yea-in-review for a sports show.  I'll apply that to the gane/reality side of 2006:

Funniest Moment:  A lady on TPIR says "Tiddy Cat" instead of Tidy Cat(not sure what pricing game it was),  Honorable mention goes to Bob Eubamks for "inadvertantly" pressing the wrong button on an energy drink question on 1vs100.

Saddest Story:  A stampede that killed 74 people while trying to enter a stadium in the Phillopines for the game show Wowowee!  Honorable Mention: The death of Peter Tomarken in a plane crash in California.

Biggest Surprise:  Regis Philbin saving NBC from a ratings quagmire during the summer with America's Got Talent.  Honorable mention:  GSN picks up Chain Reaction for season 2 while Bob Goen returns to game shows with That's the Question.

Worst Story:  The Survivor by race twist which forced advertisers to pull out their sponsorships & seeing the ratings drop.  Dishonorable Mention:  Fox's The Rich Lidy is a ome-episode wonder.

Biggest Story:  Bob Barker's retirement from TPIR.  Honorable Mention:  A renewed resurgence of game shows thanks to Deal or No Deal.

Besides Pat O'Brien being great...Game Show Marathon wasn't bad either.  Maybe it had its faults...(hey, what doesn't?)...but at least we had a month of classic game re-creations in primetime and it probably got average viewers thinking of them again, and reliving fond memories.

Even though most of Endemol's games leave something to be desired, in reality it wasn't a bad year for game shows.

GMC said that their putting up a couple of cars as prizes no longer 'fit their business objectives,' because $100,000 in merchandise is too much to have your name mentioned every time the v/o guy says "Survivor is brought to you in part by..." The sponsorship by the car company also ended well before the non-starter twist was ever revealed.

First off, I thought this thread was just an amalgamation of stories, not a contest.  Second off, I thought gameplay changes weren't minor.

This may not be major, but I think it's noteworthy: Stack the Deck becomes the 100th different Pricing Game to be played in the 35 years of The Price is Right.

Balance Game ('06) was game #100, Stack the Deck was #101.

And also (edited post-post, just because) I do own both Ken and Bob's books...I'm almost done with Bob's book and it's an excellent read.  I'm looking forward to reading Ken's book over the holidays.
