With all respect to Todd Newton and others, I believe that there is only one man who can really replace Bob Barker as the host of TPIR someday...Marc Summers. First of all he has done audience participation, secondly he has that right sort of attitude and swagger and whatnot that Bob has. Another bit of experience on his side is the fact that he saw the master at work being a page at CBS...so he saw Bob in his prime, and I think modeled his hosting style after him.
What do you all say?
-
Simple answer: Me. :)
-
I'd nominate Mark L., unless someone on this board thinks they can do better.

Do we REALLY have to restart a thread like this on a regular basis?

In his defense, the new guy didn't know that when this thread comes up, stupidity flows like water and most people get really really annoyed.
Now he does.

This debate does get old after a while, but in the guy's defense, he/she does only have two posts under his/her belt. Not to say a search could not have been done, but not everyone realizes to take that route.

Sorry about my earlier irritance. As said earlier, you ARE new to this thread, so I apologize.
By the way, welcome to the board :)
Should you stick around for at least a couple months, you'll find that the whole "Who should replace _____?" topic will come up more often than it should, even outside of The Price Is Right. So basically, it gets stale and becomes an eyesore, especially when people start naming...
Dead Hosts
Retired Hosts
Inept Hosts
Announcers
Former Contestants
Overseas hosts who can't even speak English
Breakfast Cereal Mascots...Pac Man...The Girl Who Works At Bed, Bath, and Beyond...etc..etc...the list goes on.
If you search through old threads, you'll see what I mean. Anyway, try not to start these, as you'll be sending out a mating call to all of our inept posters.
Again, welcome to the Big Board, and Happy Posting!
-
Yeah, but come on, coaster, you know that girl at Bed, Bath and Beyond is smokin'!
-
My vote goes to Philip W. Rossi.
-
There will be no replacement. When Bob decides to retire, the show will end. Don't tell me about ad revenue, etc. The only ads on the show are for insurance and prescription medications for the older demographic, which, while not the only audience overall (college kids love it between classes, blah, blah), is the only audience measured in the ratings.
Bill Bell died waiting for the slot to open up, but I would guess CBS would either turn to his production company to fill the slot, give it to CBS news for a midday service show or use it to repurpose some prime time shows. Did you miss CSI last night? Watch it at 11am the next day.
-
Come to think of it...Chris L. as host, and when somebody makes a rotten bid or doesn't know how to play a game, the audience roars his catchphrase:
"AW JEEZ, NOT THIS **** AGAIN!"

Never happen. Gordon Ramsey stole my gimmick.
"Um, I'd like 23 of the Creamette's, Chris."
"YOU DONKEY!"

Jimmy's answer is the most realistic scenario, although I stand by my Barketbot answer from the last time this question was brought up. But with Saturday nights, Spike, and weekend syndication, how many more CSI repeats do we really need anyway?

Nope--hour goes back to the affiliates. Network daytime television is more of a hindrance than a help to them these days, in their view.

Yeah. I agree with that. Once Bob Barker dies and TPiR goes away, that's basically the end of game shows. TPiR is the cornerstone of game shows, once it goes, everything goes.

If that happened, wouldn't Pearson or whomever immediately go to syndication?
If so, they'd need a new host, and really the only choice is Wink Martindale.

Fremantle--Pearson got out of the TV business years ago.

After he retires or passes on, whichever comes first, we will really have 2 start a campaign 2 keep the show on the air

Let's get 2 the point. That's just not going 2 happen. It's a waste of time 2 do that, because CBS has better things 2 do than 2 listen 2 people who are willing to start such a campaign.

As much as some of us might love to see CBS try a new one-hour game at 10 AM Central and Pacific if they drop TPIR after Barker's retirement (I had an idea for one, but some folks here shot it down...), or a pair of half-hour games, I can't help but think as well that Barker's retirement will mean an end to morning games on CBS, unless they decide to rerun a bunch of TPIRs for several months as a temporary fill-in.
The network hours in daytime have reached the point of stagnation. The last NEW network show to debut in daytime was NBC's soap "Passions". NBC also expanded the "Today Show" by another hour, ABC gave an extra half-hour back to their stations when they cancelled "Port Charles" and the only radical change I envision CBS making down the road if they drop TPIR is perhaps expanding "The Bold And The Beautiful" to an hour, though it would probably screw up a lot of established noon news shows on many of their affiliates.
These days, it's more interesting to see what the affiliates add to their daytime schedules from September to September, as well as an occasional January, March or April. At least, for what it's worth, the era of affiliates bumping network daytime shows is pretty much history.
