Title: What's My Line Stage Show in NY...
Post by: cmjb13 on August 07, 2006, 02:00:51 PM
Buzzerblog reports that the WML stage show will be starting in NY on 9/13 at the Parkside Lounge. Doing some googling reveals this (http://\"http://www.whatsmylinenyc.com/\").

Admission is $5. No J. Keith. It's hosted by a fellow named Neil O'Fortune.

I was hoping they would be able to get some fairly interesting names in NY, but I've never heard of these panelists:

Miss Clams Casino
Garth Wingfield
Jonny Porkpie
Lindsay Robertson

Still, I'll probably check it out once.

Holy, but does that strike me as a pale imitator. Enough, that I worry about Fremantle putting their foot down.

Along with the disclaimer at the bottom of the page that looks like it's been cribbed from J. Keith's web site is an addition that it has no connection with J. Keith's production.

Isn't J. Keith moving to New York?  This should be fun.

Lindsay Robertson? What a crazy name!

Yeah, this is either a very weird joke (that is, if J. Keith knows something about it) or a very sad effort.

You wanna give people the benefit of the doubt, but a look at that web site certainly suggests that this is a crew that's going to do the whole thing as a big spoofy put-on, which would make it dead in the water.

"Neil O'Fortune"?  Please.  It's too easy a thing to spoof.  What made J Keith's version so much fun was playing it straight and finding the humor that comes out of that format naturally.

And yes, J Keith is currently in New York and in a can't-win situation: seeing "his" idea clearly being ripped off by less well-known (and probably less talented) folks, but having no recourse at all since, of course, it's not really "his" idea to begin with.

I think that you'd still have enough people who would see it to make it somewhat of a success, however hollow it may be.

But I really don't think the way they have it set up is a good idea. Either they should do the live WML? show the way they were doing it with J. Keith in La-la-land, or they should just stick to the lounge singers they employ (assumption, obviously).
