Title: 50 Greatest...Moments.
Post by: tvmitch on July 26, 2006, 11:07:29 PM
So this thread isn't in the GSN thread because it's more of a general discussion:

Instead of the 50 Greatest Shows of all time, what are your personal 50 (or 5) most favorite game show moments of all time? And why?

By "moment," I mean that moment in a show where you had to stop and rewind it again to watch because it was "that cool." These are moments that actually happened on a game show, and they may or may not have any special significance in the whole scheme of things.

I don't think that our lists here should be limited to US games, because I can think of a few British (Millionaire) and Australian moments (a couple huge wins on DoND, some $ale moments) that would make my list.

A couple off the top of my head:

-Doug Van Gundy's Millionaire win, because it was the first time that I or any of us saw how that show could really be life-changing (and I remember watching it on break, on a TV I brought into work, while catering)

-This one $10K win on Super Password with Bill Rafferty from 1987, because I remember that the contestant got the last 4 words with about 10 seconds left on the clock

-The "September" answer from Dawson Feud

-Chris Tarrant torturing a contestant over a question 9, a life-changing sum of money for her,  taking her from going home to answering the question, all in 4 minutes

-The big Jackpot win from 1975 that we all have in our collections, because Geoff Edwards was so good at building that tension (which takes me to the argument that he would have been unstoppable at hosting Millionaire, but that's another thread)

That's what I've got...let's hear it from everyone.

Norma breaking the bank on "Card Sharks."  Need I say why?

The first $10,000 roll on "The Big Showdown" because I had almost given up hope of it ever happening.

Most any Winner's Circle victory on the NYC Pyramid.( I guess because we revisited them on a daily basis as the show opened.)

Here are some I love seeing over and over again:

Billy Crystal whipping through the WC in 26 seconds; how he was able to convey "Things in a Barrel" and "Things that Wilt" in one clue is beyond me...:)

The infamous "Spin War" between Cathy and Lori on PYL; it just went for so long and had such a tragic end; even though I know what happens every time I watch it, I still cringe when Cathy hits the Whammy and loses over $31,000!

Watching the "Archie/Edith Bunker" look-alike couple on Newlywed Game get 0 points throughout the entire main game and win outright on the final question; they were hilarious throughout the entire show, but seeing the looks on their faces when Eubanks tells them they've won is priceless!

Jamaica Rose's $50,000 win on TH; I think that pretty much says it all...:)

"Lucky Suit" Hal pulling off the seemingly impossible and getting three Jokers in one spin when it looked like he was going to have to pack his bags on TJW.

I'm sure there are more, but I'll stop there...:)

My top 5, as of this moment in time:

* The episode of PYL where Peter puts on a "flokati rug"

* The Yolanda incident on TPiR

* The "School Riot" on MG77

* "ASSES__", from a 1986 Scrabble ep

* The classic Shatner solo WC from $10KP

I didn't say they were in any sort of order, just that it's there. Plus, I've never seen it in the clear, always with some sort of graphic or blur obscuring the bottom part of the frame, but I know an uncensored copy has to exist, somewhere. It's not like I sit and watch these moments over and over again, just that I thought they were funny as hell.

Plus, it's not like I have to justify my opinions or anything ;)

Although not common among the game show community, a lady named Susan Wolf won a $61,000 jackpot on $ale and her winning reaction was priceless, great episode.

Other Moments

-From Classic Concentration, Ben intentionally loses in the winner's circle.

-Andy Cullpepper's $100,000 Pyramid Win. The guy's reaction is priceless as well.

-The Christmas/Jewish Blooper on Scrabble is another fave of mine.

-A montage of zingers from Joan Rivers on the 80's version of HS.

Here's a few personal favorites of mine:

Nancy Christy being the first female to win the $1,000,000 on the Syndicated Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

Tim Holleran's $90,000 jackpot win on Sale of the Century to win a total of $166,875 in cash and prizes.

The infamous Mosquitos incident on Scrabble.

Here are some of my favorittes in no particular order:

A lady says "Nipples" on Match Game.  When Gene Rayburn heard that, he got caught up in the moment & the whole audience went hysterical on it.

A lady almost got caught cheating on TPIR's Shell Game.  Barker nearly let her get away with it when she was gonna look under the shell to see if the ball was there before he emphatically disallowed that move,

Staying on TPIR, a guy in a wheelchair wins a car in Cover-Up.  That truly was a special moment for me because it shows anyone can win no matter how handicapped you are,

Rose's $50K TH win.  This was on top of her miss at $46K earlier in her run.  Geoff saying 'Jamaca mistake Rose?" was priceless.

The "Turkey" bit on Family Fortunes.  Every time I see it, I kept thinking "What was that guy smoking when he said it each time?"

The check was worth $50000 the entire time Rose was on. The miss at $46000 was presented as a clip during an episode of Rose's reign, something on the order of "don't let this happen to you" and involved a different contestant.
For me, a memorable rewinding moment was when Johnny Gilbert accidentally introduced Glen Kagen as the host of Jeopardy!

GSN did air that entire $46,000 episode.  The first time was in November 1997, shortly after they added the show to their schedule.

Since we are also considering international versions of the show, I'll add these two

Deal or No Deal

Australia

Dean Cartecchini no dealing $102,500 with $200,000 and $5 left on the board (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLhDynnsA4o&search=Deal%20or%20No%20Deal\")

UK

Trevor Bruce's last box pick in his game (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC4zaBq-koQ&search=Deal%20or%20No%20Deal\")

I make it a rule not to link to clips that I have seen on other sites, and do not get full credit.  However, the Australian clip comes from the same guy who runs the Australian Game Show Page, and the person who posted the UK clip gives full credit to Mike Klauss' site.

Here's one from "The Hollywood Squares" that I just got in a trade, I hope it counts because it doesn't involve game play:

Peter Marshall: Mary, your series is called Brothers and Sisters, and it's on another network--what night are you on, dear?
Mary Crosby: It's on Friday, on NBC.
Peter Marshall:  Oh, it's on NBC?
Mary Crosby: Yes!
Peter Marshall: ...It's on NBC, that's probably why I didn't know about it!  (laughs nervously) Just kidding, Freddy!

I had to watch that one two more times, I just about died.

The other famous moment from TPiR: the woman who fainted when she won her showcase.  I actually saw that one the day it first aired.

Joe (? pardon my memory) Trela winning the top prize on "Millionaire."  Carpenter whizzed right through his but Trela sweated bullets.

The guy on "Greed" who answered the question "Which of the following shows were not hosted by Chuck Woolery?" with something like "I've been following your career for some time and I'm sure it's not 'Wheel of Fortune.'"  Ouch, it's like watching a train wreck.

The one we saw at the beginning of GSN's "50 Greatest," the woman who won the $25,000 on "Treasure Hunt."  Even the producers thought that was worth seeing again.

Once on "Match Game" the rest of the panel appeared to get fed up with guest celeb Mary Ann Mobley.  During a question in which the "definitive answer" was "Fanny," Gene looks at the former Miss America and says "OK Mary Ann, show us your fanny!"  Then Brett (God love her) pipes in with something like "Go ahead dear, you've already shown it to everyone else!"

Peter Marshall, asking Paul Lynde a question, intends to say "a tortoise at a Seattle zoo."  It, of course, comes out "Seattle Jew."  Mother McKenzie was in hysterics, as were the celebrities.  As the McKenzied laughter continues, Marshall bades Harry Friedman (then HSq writer, now J! and WoF executive producer) to join him at the podium--and Marshall points him out as a "Seattle Jew."

Funny stuff.  This ep was one of the 150 GSN had licensed, but I never was able to GIOT.  Steve Beverly, who included the clip in his tribute to Marshall during the luncheon at the Congreff, told me that the ep aired in 1977 originally--I think it's more like 1975 (and, no, I'm not using this to take a shot at SB).  But now you know. :)

Interesting list. They blew #31, however-- the description of the 1962 Jack Benny incident on "Password" is actually an amalgam of two separate incidents of celebrities giving the work "Me" as a clue.  Benny's partner actually said "comedian"... it was Alan King's partner in 1964 who said "Ham".   And just to be a total wet blanket about the whole thing, neither audience response was anywhere near two minutes... though those **were** two of the best laughs in the history of the program.

I believe someone took a wild guess at the end of the game and guessed he was the governor of a state.  But no one guessed Jimmy Carter by name or even Georgia, as far as I remember.  It's definitely true they weren't blindfolded, he signed in as "Mr. X."

I wish they'd rerun the Larry Blyden "What's My Line?" episodes so I can once again see Maria von Trapp's appearance as "Miss X."

When she came out wearing a traditional Austrian costume, the audience snickered, but when she was identified onscreen as "Baroness Maria von Trapp of 'Sound of Music' Fame," the audience went nuts.

At one point, Arlene Francis asked if von Trapp had broken some record: "Did you fly over the ocean? Did you climb a mountain?" And Larry Blyden shouted with laughter.

Holy moley.  Well, whatever to stay working.

However, it seems to me that being a Universal Life Church minister's not that much of a unique credit, since you and I can also be a minister if we put down enough money.  Nice that she can officiate at weddings, though--she can conduct the ceremony *and* sing "Oh Promise Me" or "We've Only Just Begun," thereby saving you money.  If she could play the organ, too...  :)

Money? I'm pretty sure that being ordained through the ULC is absolutely free (as in beer), isn't it? If you want the documents and books and guidelines in hardcopy form, yeah, the Ministry In A Box (what a great name) is $139, but I think you can be legal for free. I keep meaning to do it, since you never know when you might need to be an ordained minister. :) Buddy of mine is ordained by them, in fact, and performed a ceremony over the weekend.

I point your attention to rule 7 in the Eligibility Requirements (https://www.gameshowforum.org/index.php/topic,34481.0.html):

7. Bumping Threads

Replying to long-dormant threads is strongly discouraged unless the "bump" provides relevant information that might spark new discussion or give important answers to unanswered questions.

This bump did not provide relevant information that will spark new discussion -- it's just another laundry list item in a thread of laundry list items.

Please stop bumping threads in which the conversation has long since finished.
