Post by: pianogeek on June 09, 2006, 12:25:02 PM
According to fast nationals (http://\"http://www.zap2it.com/tv/ratings/zap-ratings060806,0,2515595.story?coll=zap-tv-ratings-headlines\"),

1st- NBA Nation (ABC), 4.7/9
2nd- Game Show Marathon, 4.6/8

Great show last night.  But, I really thought this episode would get a good sampling and rank over.

I don't think anyone expected "Dance" to break out in its second series the way that it has.  And Fox is going to put a rerun of it at 8 p.m. for at least the next three weeks--you can be sure of that.  The NBA Finals didn't help either--are there any future games scheduled on Thursday nights?

One thing that helps GSM is that it's up against the pre-game show. The game itself starts at 9:00.

Exactly, Chris. Being an NBA fan, I watched as much NBA coverage as I could before Game Show Marathon was set to begin. (At least I got to see that SICK SICK dunk by D-Wade)

The NBA Finals... usually draw big ratings, especially when you have two great teams that excite people like Dallas and Miami. If this series goes seven games, don't be surprised if NBA Nation tramples the competition. Only 'cause I love watching both teams play, I hope this series goes six or seven games. :)

As an aside, I certainly hope the Finals go 7 games...it has all the makings of being a classic series.  The Finals draw big but have really tailed off in the last 5-6 years or so.  The broadcast is great this year since the guys calling the game actually aren't phoning it in (i.e. Al Michaels the last couple of years).

Thank you! Last nite's game was probably one of the most enjoyable games up until I changed it to CBS-2. Both teams excite me in their own way, and Dwyane Wade is becoming a star right before our eyes. The announcers are great this year, although I did enjoy Al Michael's call when Derek Fisher made that shot with 0.4 seconds left. ;-D

sorry this went off-topic, guys!

Bzzz.  The Eastern Time Zone has 47.0% of the U.S. population, Central has 32.9%.  So, for nearly 80% of the country, the GSM was up against the pre-game show.  The remainder is 5.4% for Mountain, 14.1% for Pacific and 0.6% for the others.  (Source (http://\"http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:q0-jsM8XFRoJ:www.tcf.org/Publications/ElectionReform/NCFER/hansen_chap9_uniform.pdf+mountain+time+zone+population+percentage&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=3\"))

This may merely be arguing semantics, but you, mmb5, are wrong.  The game did indeed start at 9:00 PM in the Eastern time zone (about 1/4 of the physical contiguous US) only.  True, 9:00 Eastern corresponds to 8:00 Central.  Still, only about 1/2 the country (land area-wise) saw the NBA Finals game begin at such a time as to allow the viewing of both it and the Marathon without missing any of the other.

Do Nielsen ratings count land area or viewers?  If you believe I am still wrong, please go back to your last place of higher education and ask for a refund.

Alright, enough.

Mike, he obviously wasn't talking about Nielsen ratings when you made your original post calling him wrong.

You're both right, and it is semantics. Now shake hands and move on with it.

Looks like you need a refund as well.  It's not semantics.  A land mass does not watch television.  People watch television.  Please don't make me use puppets.

Way to totally miss my point. My point was that he was speaking GEOGRAPHICALLY. You were speaking in Nielsen-ratings terms.

I suggest you take your own advice and get a refund on your education, and go further and pay back all the tax dollars your parents paid to put YOU through school, if you're gonna be insulting like that for no apparent reason.

I paid my own way, thank you.

And you missed my point, geography is an irrelevant argument.  The ratings system as devised by Nielsen is used as a tool to give broadcasters and advertisers a feel on how to charge or be charged for commercial time on a television program.  The rating is based on a sampling of people watching television at any one point.  The Nielsen people do not call people per square mile, they call people regardless of their geography, and 80% of them happen to be in the Eastern or Central time zones.

Even if this was for some absurd reason geographically based, it's not half the country, it's about 40%.  Don't forget Alaska.

Next time you want a battle of wits, please come armed.

Given the way ratings have been going for this series, I don't think it's coming back on CBS. Maybe they'll do it again- only on GSN this time.

"GSM" would've not run in sweeps, no matter what its quality--Moonves doesn't believe in running that kind of reality stunt during sweeps and doesn't need to.  When you've got his lineups, all you need are things like the Grammys or the CMAs (and, admittedly, a Dr. Phil special or two) and you're all set.

WOW!! :) That's a sizeable jump. This makes me very happy, especially since the only things that beat it in ratings for the night, at all, were CSI, Without a Trace, and the NBA game, but very barely...

If this doesn't prove there is still a very sizeable interest in PYL in today's TV market, I don't know what will...

Check the 18-49 demo in the same article.  Unless I'm not reading it right, PYL came in fourth.
