Fremantle... the most wonderful company in the world, soon to make a major announcement about that great stage production, TPiR-Live ;-)... announces that John O'Hurley will step in as the new host of "Family Feud" as the show celebrates it's 30th year with a new set and new look.
I'm sure the press release will be printed soon, and somebody will be able to provide a link. Although Fremantle has made the announcement, I haven't yet found it online.

Well, they are rebuilding it for the CBS special, why not?
I like John O'Hurley and look forward to the new season. Maybe my "Feud" station will be more inclined to air the show. Right now, it is scheduled in daytime, but more often than not gets preempted for a last-minute infomercial.
-
Tremendously good news. Rich Karn, in 3 words, Wasn't. Cutting. It.
But I gotta opine : the show has become so damned homogenized, you could put anyone in there to host and it wouldn't matter. The show needs someone to take control of the reins and make the Feud 'their own'.... it worked for Dawson, it worked for Combs, it has not worked since.
Congrats to O'hurley though...a good guy in person!
-
I thought Randy was springing an April Fools joke a bit early, but a quick Google News search turns up a link.

O'Hurley seems a little. . . I don't know, sophisticated for the Feud. He's terrific, but he doesn't seem down home, which the show kind of needs. Dawson wasn't exactly down home either, but he was willing to kiss everyone.
Congrats to John on the gig, though.
-
Had a week recently when I was working later in the day and woke up to a double dose of Feud every morning...Richard's shtick got old pretty quick over that week. I think he was actually better in the beginning. A facelift will be great for the show, and I think O'Hurley is a fantastic emcee choice.
As for the set redesign, all for it. We've basically had the same set since Louie.

I'm all for it, too. I didn't mean to imply with my comment that we shouldn't go back to the original, but come up with something that is a refreshing change to something that hasn't been touched too much since '99.

But will John still DOUBLE THE POINTS!!!1!
Seriously, if he does half as good at this as he did with TTTT2K (and let us not forget the Celebrity Spelling Bee), they've made an excellent choice. I thought Richard did a pretty good job, but he never seemed to improve in it. (Of course after Louie, darn near anybody would have been an improvement.)

Well said... ;)
Having never seen TTTT2k (wasn't shown in my area), I have no fronthand opinion on what John O'Hurley will be like, but I've heard almost nothing but praise for his work.
As for the new set, I actually like it in its current form, *ducks under the table* but I never liked it as much as Combs's. Combs's had both the game show and "homey" feel that I'd want and I'd expect out of FF.
Does anybody know if there are going to be any rule changes? I really couldn't imagine what they'd be, except if Fremantle wanted to up the fast money prize, which I somewhat doubt...
-
I think this is a really good choice.....He's done a proven format before and did it well. I think he'll bring a bit of sophistication to the show, but he has that kind of dry wit that I think would work well with the contestants. I hope he does well.
I also agree with the people who say they should use the new Austrailan show as a guide for the new set..and maybe use their Fast Money format as well (or at least use the UK version....maybe $50,000 instead of $20,000 if they get 200 points and all 5 #1's between the 2 players?)
-
This is the firt I have heard about this. Is Karn stepping down by choice? I can't wait to see the new version and am glad to hear that O'Hurley is the new host!
-
I also think that this is great news for Family Feud. While I don't think Richard was awful, he often seemed disconnected from contestants. Hopefully John will be able to connect a little more.
On a side note, after watching Deal or No Deal for several weeks, I can't help but think that Howie Mandel would be the perfect pick for a new Feud host (although most likely not interested).

The show had been making decent-enough ratings gains for everyone to justify status quo, especially considering the lower expectations all have had all along for this version.
However, the remaining shows in the genre have all taken ratings hits this season--"Feud" may've taken more. It's also the last-place traditional game show out of the four (the dwindling relationship shows are all lower-rated, though) and Fremantle and Tribune must've decided that it was time to make changes.
-
I, too, like this decision. Having been a regular viewer of TTTT 2K, I think O'Hurley did a nice job as host. I'm looking forward to seeing how he does here.
-
Here's a way to win a bar bet (assuming you hang out in bars where they discuss game show hosts): According to IMDB, Karn is about eight months *older* than O'Hurley.

Or what about a lil' bit of elements from the Spanish version (minus their version of the Lolli-pop tree and cheap payoffs...lol!)
What I would suggest is that if a team reaches 300 points before Round 4 (Triple Round), they play the Fast Money as normal,
And if the family wins the Fast Money, then they should play a mini bonus round similar to what they do on the Spanish version. Play one extra question and they have to get all the answers in one big sweep! If they get them in one sweep, they could win a grand total of $50,000!!!
What do you think?
-
You know I did suggest this in a post earlier this year. Its okay of you all don't remember.
Seriously, this is great news. I just hope there are not a lot of rule changes, if any. They messed with perfection once in '99. Do you really want to see it happen again?
-
Are you guys sure this is for the TV show and not for the same-name live road show?
If so, what a nice surprise! I'm glad as you are John's getting another chance to host another game show. Not sure why Richard Karn's not coming back, but oh well.
I hope that there will be a little more money avilable to contestants than normal.
-
Yeah, because who the hell wants the pocket change that is $20,000, eh? And since RANDY WEST said it prior and there was a press release, we're pretty sure it's for the TV show. How about looking in the post before you unleash yourself upon us.
-
When I saw the subject line, I thought that this was for the Atlantic City show debuting Sunday. Upon looking again, obviously it's not the case.
I'm quite shocked. I figured he must be doing something right to last this long. He was quite strange at times with his odd use of phrases.
After a round where the question was "Name a famous Dennis", he cut to commercial saying "Dennis the Menace, when's the last time?" I had heard even the director couldn't make sense of what he says at times.
I almost had the privilege of meeting him (taping schedule was tight as he had to do something with his kid), but did see him briefly in the hallway at Feud. He seemed to be a nice guy from what I've heard. But a new host & set change can't hurt. Wouldn't it be nice if they changed the survey board?
As for Burton, I'd be surprised if they let him go. He's lasted through 1 host change. But stranger things have happened.

-
Well, last time we premiered a show or revival after the Aussies, we ended up with our 80s $ale of the Century set. Hopefully, the same will prove true for the new set. That survey board better change, considering it's pretty much been used since Dawson 94.
John O' Hurley? You can't do much better than that when looking for a new host. I think he will do a great job. I am totally confident that he will not fall into the same "DOUBLE THE POINTS!" monologue/trap that Richard Karn did.
-
I was really caught off guard by this one! But to tell the truth, I'm happy. I can already imagine O'Hurley rattling off the questions in a calm manner like Dawson.
Now can we get rid of those awful Karn-introductions, because somehow I don't want to hear "And Now, THE LORD OF THE BOARD! JOOOOOOHN O'HURLEY!"
-
O'Hurley did appear with Dawson the Great. It was a soap opera show. I don't recall if it was network or syndicated but I think it was in the last 400-point season.

"The Edge of Night", which was an ABC show by that point (was on CBS before).
As for picking up O'Hurley, nice move. He has that wit that Dawson had in his early years, and the plus is that I just can't see him Doubling The Points ©. :-)
-
Hopefully, for the upcoming '06-'07-O'Hurley season, they will ease up on the "Tilt-A-Whirl" camera shots...Better yet, ELIMINATE them!
As far as the timing of the announcement, would that be a safe assumption to say that Fremantle's announcement came on the heels of Feud taping it's last show of the season?
One thing I'd love to see Feud do (if not the Fast Money round, than at least to replace the 'eggcrate' displays) is to incorporate the new high-intensity LED light technology into the set.
For those who aren't familiar with the new generation LED's, they are way brighter than regular incandescent lighting or old school LED's (which is why you see more traffic lights being retrofitted with them -- bright as hell but use less energy). And thanks to companies like Daktronics, you can make creative multi-color boards/displays.
And yes, I would love to hear the dulcet tones of Mr. West doing the announcing for Feud as well. ;-)

I also think this is a good move. Richard Karn... he was likeable, and he could be funny, but he also missed SEVERAL opportunities to quip about the bad answers. Also, it seems his shows have been "routine". I mean, how many times has Richard said "drawing first blood".
I noticed when they switched back to the 300 point format, Richard was actually interacting with some members of the family before introducing the next family, but this interaction seemed... stilted. Also, there were many noticeable edits. So, they pretty much had Richard just introduce the families, and immediately introduce the second family.
For me, a good host knows how to stretch when there's extra time, and Richard just didn't cut it in that area.
This may be why they cut to commercial after the first half of fast money if the game was won in 3 rounds.
I don't think they'll keep the DOUBLE THE POINTS thing, but one thing I hope they wouldn't do is take advantage of John's resonant voice and put an echo in it when he announces the dollar values are doubled.
Another bad move would be to insert graphics a la WOF.... Family Feud doesn't really need extra glitz, just a host that can be consistently funny and knows how to interact with people.
As for "going back to the old set"... dream on. I mean, they might do a reasonably good re-creation of the classic set, with some modern elements, but they need to keep the computerized survey board. The days of manually changing the answers and manually flipping the answers are gone.

And if Fremantle wanted Karn to stay in the family that badly, either they would have mentioned the 'transfer' in the peeahr release, or would have had OHurley 'practice' in AC before switching...

Well, it's fitting. He's certainly a tool. :)

Well, I was certainly shocked when I heard the news. In fact, I first heard about it on "The Tony Danza Show" this morning.
I'm probably in the minority who likes Richard Karn and while I hate to see him go, I look forward to seeing John O' Hurley host the Feud. In fact, I remember a commercial he did with Louie Anderson back in September 2000 as they were promoting both the new season of "Family Feud" and the Premiere of "To Tell The Truth." An HOUR of POWER! (For those of you who remember the promo :) )
How many times are they going to change the set?? It seems like they change something every season. I like the current set.
Finally, I agree with most of you. I would love to hear Randy West announce The Feud! He's one of my favorite announcers :)
-
Randy would kick arse announcing the Feud, I'll agree. Perhaps Mr. West could shed some light on something for us.
The posed question to Randy is actually relating to the live show in A.C., with the dueling shows in A.C. (Price & Feud, of course) is it reasonable to presume that you would announce one of the two shows while Daniel Rosen announces the other? And/or...is there going to be a new announcer thrown into the mix?

I'm actually really happy about this change. Karn, while he did try, just was not a good host for Feud. Maybe for something not involving comedy he would be good, but not for this. Louie wasn't a great host, but he had some comedy. If they could combine Karn's ability to host and Anderson's comedy talent, they would be great. I think O'Hurley could do it. I never saw him on Truth, so I won't comment on that, but he was very good on the Spelling bee show that FOX aired. The new set interests me also. Wonder what they will go with. Well, looks like I'll be able to stomach Feud again. Karn is gone, hooray.

My father chatted with him a bit between commercial breaks, as we where standing right behind the director and an assistant we had gotten to know. He definetly seemed like a nice guy, and didn't mind chatting with a curious audience member.. I even asked the guy we met on another shows green room if he might have any 8X10's around to autograph, but sadly by that time when he went to find Karn, he had gone right to lunch, and it was our last show of the day..
The ONLY thing I found really annoying about Karns fued, was the 'I'm going to DOUBLE the points!'.....and audience cheers.....I really hope that dosn't make it to the new version.... But the staff also seemed to laugh at most of his comments during tape, so they must have liked him enough too.. I love watching the behind the scenes stuff during show tape, as you can see the s how if you miss a segment on TV later ;)

OK, Quick Questions here.....And it's going to be off and on topic at the same time...
When is TPIR Live Scheduled to leave Atlantic City? I went to the link cmjb13 posted earlier in the thread, and it mentioned TPIR Live for March 29th - April 2nd... Last I heard it was going to be there till early May. Has that changed? Maby that'll give us an extended chance to see Randy live..
Also, anyone planning on attending the taping of FF Live on Sunday? I'm curious if they've publicized the host yet.
Thanks :)

Never. Like a patient in a hospital gown, it's "open ended".

I've got committments in LA and NY for the next few weeks. You can join my mom in keeping track of my whereabouts on the "news" page at www.tvrandywest.com (http://\"http://www.tvrandywest.com\")

A friend of mine was told that the run, as of now, is indefinite.

That link was for Bally's Las Vegas. They have incorrect dates listed there. Ticketmaster confirms a start date of 4/25, and it's runs sporadically until 5/31 alternating with Donn Arden’s Jubilee (I'm sure it will go past that, but that's all Ticketmaster lists for now)
Also, anyone planning on attending the taping of FF Live on Sunday?
I'll be there.

Sorry Randy, didn't see this reply before I IM'ed ya.
We booked tickets for this Sunday. Hopefully they will arive by noon Saturday as promised, even though we ordered them today.
But at 89$'s for two tickets... I decided to hold off on the FF ones till next week after the next paycheck arrives :)

Today I saw a tape of Richard Karn in the beginning when the game was still structured Louie's way. If anything Richard was better. He had enthusiasm similar to Dawson in '76, made small talk with the contestants and didn't say things like 'they need those points to get out of zero'. From watching you could say his biggest problem was falling into a predictable rut too soon.
