Title: My PYL Game
Post by: visualbasicwizard on March 24, 2006, 04:49:43 PM
Howdy all!  I've just posted some screenshots of my own PYL game on my website.  I've spent the last month working on the thing, and would like to hear any comments anybody has. Link to it here. (http://\"http://geocities.com/thecourtjesture/PYL.html\")

Thanks!

Should I REALLY be surprised at the Geoshitties error I just got?

Nah, I really shouldn't be.

Once again, GeoVillages owned the internet.

Any other way we can get it from you Dan?

To the OP,

You might want to double check the spelling of at least one prize name before you release this.  Swedes might not like the way you misspelled their homeland.  Other than that, very nice.  The fading transition when the board rotates looks very nice.

Damn.  I was in a hurry yesterday to get it running.  I did not expect it to top off so quick.  I'll try to find something better.  Sorry about that.

Lol.  That's how the spell checker wanted it to be spelled!  I thought I had it right.  The fading was the tricky part to get running because my computer is barely fast enough to draw it in time.  Thanks!

First of all, a very nice look. Curt King's version, which features most of the redesigns I sent him, started it all off and got good reception. Yoder's got a fab one, and this one's right up there with them. Great stuff, really.

But I notice one thing of mine that's carried over in all PYL programs since: the coins behind the dollar figures. I remember working to death on trying to draw those stacks around the numbers 6 years ago, and there were two variations on the stacks for money with and without a spin.

Sooner or later, I know someone's gonna give those stacks a swing and make 'em look better than I did. VBW? Chris? Who'd like to be the first?

There's a third variation, the "lacka stacks" motif around the pink $1500 and a spin in the bottom corner.

I've had really good luck with Inno Setup:

The best part is that it is free as in beer, even for commercial use. So you might have a look at that.

Looks like I'm not the only one who  tried to do a Press Game.

I don't think my set turned out too bad, and if I have any images still left, I'll try to post it.  But I was using Director 7 to try and make the game, and I couldn't figure out how to set some things up properly like the transitions..

OK, maby they do suck.. But it's tougher to get it done in 3D :)

Normally posts don't aggrivate me, but...

Give me a break.  Spelling isn't my strong suit, so don't bash me over the head with it each time.  I do go back and correct the ones I notice...

But, just to please you, I installed ASpell for Firefox... Happy?

The Geocities link worked for me. When I went there, there were four sponsored links for Flokati rugs. No foolin'.

Hmm, that's weird.  I used the Spell Checker, and it didn't find any errors.  I even highlighted it to be sure and did it twice..

[/quote]That's the problem. You're using it as a crutch. The better thing to do is to learn how to spell properly, then you won't need spell checker. Believe me, when you misspell a word so elementary as "maby"...you don't appear smart.

No no no no no. He's shown a commitment to make an effort, and he shouldn't be dumped on for that.

That said, Shredder, Travis illustrates why this stuff matters...if you want your posts to be taken seriously, you should care that it's easy to read. And misspellings and poor grammar make things harder to read. Props to you if you can get that working. The reason I pointed out Spellbound Development (the second link) is because it's the only browser spellchecker that I have found that has a spell-as-you-type function...as you're writing a post it will underline questionable words with a red dotted line, and you can Ctrl-Click on them and have it suggest corrections or add a word that you KNOW is right to the custom dictionary, just like a real word processor. :)

Because we can't talk this long about spelling without me saying SOMETHING:

One of the biggest tricks to spelling more reliably is noticing how words are related. "Maybe", as a fine example, is simply (spelling-wise) a combination of the words "may" and "be".

Ha!  Imagine that!

(Not harping on you, Robert... it just amazes me that the word 'maybe' could be misspelled.  But I misspell 'misspell' all the time.  So it's all relative.)

I found out why this program didn't catch the last word.  I missed one important step in the process.....The choosing of the language at the bottom..I thought it just defaulted to English, but I actually had to select it even though it was the only one available.
