CBS hasn't confirmed it yet, but Deadline has the scoop (https://deadline.com/2023/02/the-late-late-show-with-james-corden-replaced-at-cbs-with-midnight-1235252659/#recipient_hashed=2b1930bd258d0778b8ed7cd5c08f347700c49bbaa740666cd55cc5e589cc2107&recipient_salt=05a78d9e8b7f00e0e1642fcfb571e78889927bcb55e2b8e0cd9d221937eb4498) that the much beloved show is coming back to replace Corden after he leaves.

All I hear is a chance to finally win Hashtag Wars. :P
-
The news excited me at first, but it sounds like Chris Hardwick won't be there. And being on CBS instead of Comedy Central probably means the humor will have to be cleaned up a bit. I'll still be tuning in, but I'm not holding my breath.
-
Something else I just realized: not counting Fallon’s occasional games, I believe this is the first (network) late-night game show in more than 30 years. CBS also had two relationship games in the summer of ‘92 with “Personals” and “Perfect Score”.
-
Well, there was Poker After Dark on NBC. :)

This is always a gray area for me. It wasn’t a game show the same way “Super Pay Cards” was, but it had so many competitive elements that made it feel like one.

@12:37AM doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

They could always call it @fter_midnight. There's absolutely no way that will ever upset anyone on the internet.

Especially if they use a hopped-up version of Eric Clapton's song for the theme. That'll piss off EVERYBODY! :D
-
And it's officially been announced! The new show will be called "After Midnight" and will debut in early 2024.
Deets at this link (https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-entertainment/shows/after-midnight/releases/?view=108718-cbs-announces-executive-producing-team-showrunners-and-head-writer-for-new-late-night-series-after-midnight).

Um, "Night Games" (also hosted by Jeff Marder) says hello.

Um, "Night Games" (also hosted by Jeff Marder) was 1991, (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101154/) the year before the shows I mentioned, and was gone by June of '92. But thanks for the unnecessary pedantic "correction". I'll keep it in mind.

I’m genuinely excited for this. @midnight was one of my favorite game shows of the 2010s and I was pretty bummed when it was canceled. Now I gotta decide whether to resurrect my Twitter to win Hashtag Wars. :P

Comedienne is an outdated gendered term that has a tendency to imply inferiority. Comedian is correct.

I would hope one of the first things they do is announce that they're not going to use any content from "X" and focus on other social mediae.

would you have known that Taylor was a woman when all the descriptions (host, name and occupation) can be construed as male?

I could see her photo and I can google her name, so what does it matter?

Most people I know named Taylor are women, but the picture of her chatting with Stephen Colbert pretty much spelled it out for me.
But it also doesn’t matter that much to me either.
/Actually didn’t realize “comedienne” was outdated

Bumping this thread because we now have tape dates for After Midnight in Los Angeles. "Test shows" will be taped on January 11 and January 12, followed by the first "official" show on January 16.
https://1iota.com/show/1646/after-midnight
To be completely honest, though...while it will certainly be better than Comics Unleashed (not hard), am I the only one who can't see After Midnight as that great an idea? @midnight was great, but it was also representative of an era of the Internet that seems to me to be over. Hashtag Wars losing a lot of its luster now that Twitter has become X is just one example.
Still, I'm going to check After Midnight out, and am ultimately rooting for it to succeed - I get the feeling that if it doesn't, CBS will just give up on that time slot entirely.
-
I think the great thing about that timeslot is that it's somewhat experimental, so the bar might be kinda low ratings-wise. Not sure what ratings James Corden pulled, but as long as the dropoff from Colbert to Taylor isn't too steep I think CBS will be content.
Plus I imagine it can't be the most expensive show in the world, compared to a late night talk show.
/Am curious to see what happens with Hashtag Wars

I think the offerings both from The CW and Dropout over the past few years indicate that there is some demand for rapid/short-form comedy. The Internet-ness of @midnight was just the flavoring.
-
This will probably be just as much about viral online content as anything. The traditional offering just gets to come along for the ride.
-
Plus I imagine it can't be the most expensive show in the world, compared to a late night talk show.
There were reports around the time that Corden stepped down which said that CBS was losing upwards of $20 million a year on The Late Late Show, and presumably justified it as a promotional tool and for the viral sensations like Singing In Cars and Stopping Traffic With Showtunes.

Media is the correct word. It is the plural of medium and a collective noun.
At last! A use for the three years of Latin I studied in middle (junior high) school.

The article doesn't make clear whether Tuesday is because 12:37 a.m. is technically Tuesday morning (i.e., immediately following Monday's episode of The Late Show) or Tuesday as in "the second day of the traditional late night week." I assume the former, but local TV listings haven't been updated to reflect the new schedule.
-
From The Hollywood Reporter:
The network will debut the show, hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson and based on Comedy Central’s @midnight, on Jan. 16 — or technically Jan. 17, as it debuts at 12:37 a.m. ET/PT, but at the tail end of the Jan. 16 broadcast day.
-
Emmys are Monday 1/15, so late-night is dark that day.
-
Unless I am very much mistaken, I am under the impression After Midnight will be a talk show, not a game show. I am a fan of Taylor Tomlinson and I can't see her hosting a game show, but I do think it would be interesting to see her interviewing guests. I am really rooting for her, I think she'll be great.

If you are expecting a program where Taylor Tomlinson sits at a desk and interviews guests, then you are, in fact, very much mistaken. As has been reported many, many times, this program is based on the Comedy Central program @midnight. There will probably be differences between this and the original show, and we'll find that out soon enough, but @midnight is usually referred to as a game show. It is a game show in much the same way that Whose Line Is It Anyway? is a game show. Professional funny people make up funny things on the spot and are awarded points by the host more or less arbitrarily. Some folks might want to argue whether or not that sort of format constitutes what WE typically think of as a "game show," but whatever the show is, it is not a talk show.
-
Unless I am very much mistaken
You are. The article acknowledges it as a reboot of the CC game show, and both Jack Martin and Eric Pierce have extensive game show experience (also mentioned in the article). Eric is also really good peoples.
Don’t overthink this one.

This is something that always confused me a bit with the 12:35 am and later shows. I guess you could still say it technically premieres Monday because it’s still 11:35 pm Central, but it’s a lotta math that makes my brain hurt.

By that logic SNL should be Sunday Morning Live for an hour starting at midnight

/Am curious to see what happens with Hashtag Wars
Just happened to notice that After Midnight is now conducting their first Hashtag War - on Threads.
https://www.threads.net/@aftermidnight
I checked their accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter X - there is no mention of it on any of them.
-
Hmmm…I put off getting on Threads but I might have to reconsider. Thanks for the heads-up!
-
I just deleted Threads the other day. It appears to have gotten just about as caustic as X, if not more so.

This might be the first image of the set, and it's not even official. A friend of mine (in fact, my former morning news coanchor) works for CBS and creates content for the local stations to use on their newscasts. She interviewed Tomlinson today, and shared what looks like her own snapshot on her Facebook page. I know their Threads account is still teasing a set reveal.
