Since tomorrow will be Matt O.'s episode, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread especially for this occasion.
-
This way he can get the restraining order in advance.
-
Matt, for a man who specializes in television research, you really played the best you could.
-
Do you still have any of the prizes you won?

Now imagine this 'compliment' in needlepoint.

How'd you do that?
-
Now imagine this 'compliment' in needlepoint.
I have a needlepoint sampler my then-girlfriend made for me that says "HATE IS JUST A SPECIAL KIND OF LOVE WE SHOW TO PEOPLE WHO SUCK".
/I framed it
//still one of my best friends

Exactly how long does the process take from thought to keyboard? Hint: Take longer.
-
I really do not get what it was I did wrong. That gave Chris Lambert, Chris Lemmon, Dale_Grass, PYLdude, and Aaron Sica the right to act this rude towards me. All I did was give Matt Ottinger a compliment. Do you have a problem with that?
Please explain. Please elaborate.
-
Chris Lemmon
First off, one M.
Second off, please to be showing me where my lone comment in this thread was even directed towards you, much less in any way acting rude towards you.
Then, once you fail to do that, I will await your apology.
Finally, an actual technical question for the class: is the audio sync off, and if so is this a common problem with GSN daytime? (It's entirely possible that I need to tweak a setting on my HTPC, as well, which is why I am trying to find out if it's just me.)
-
All I did was give Matt Ottinger a compliment.
You may have thought you were giving him a compliment, but to the wider audience it doesn't sound like one because of the order you put your chosen words in.
"Matt, it was fun to see you on TV again. You performed well and looked like you were having a good time, and I hope you cherish the memory for years and years." That's a compliment. If I were to say "If only you had resisted temptation and not bought that silly swing set you would have won the game," even if I believe I am being pleasant and complimentary, is dickish.
Communication is given and received. You are really bad at prejudging how your communiques will be received, and then take umbrage when we call you out for saying stupid crap.
-
Okay, I admit I was wrong with what I said about Chris Lemon and PYLdude in this thread.
-
Okay, I admit I was wrong with what I said about Chris Lemon in this thread.
And...?
-
Okay, I admit I was wrong with what I said about Chris Lemon in this thread.
PYLDude also deserves an apology. All he did was ask how a picture was created. He was in no way rude towards you.
And if you honestly don't get why your comment came across in the wrong way, which I don't think you do because you do this kinda crap all.the.time, then I have nothing else to say about the matter.
-
Vahan, do you know what a backhanded compliment is? Furthermore, do you understand the phrase think before you speak? Because you are guilty of not doing the latter far too often here. And as expected, you play the victim card when you've been called out by several people. And after being pointed to your mistake, you still don't get why you a) came across as a jerk and b) continue to get the responses you do.
Back to your statement, it comes across as insincere, mocking and condescending. If you don't get why, I'll break it down even further. It sounds like you're saying "Matt, you're so smart, yet you still blew it (it's quite sad that anyone has to explain that to a 27-year-old)." It doesn't matter what your "intent" was, you did a poor way of expressing it, and this isn't the first time you've done so. It's just this time, people had something to say. You really need to think your posts out or stop posting.
But hey, we're the bad guys, right?
-
I really do not get what it was I did wrong. That gave Chris Lambert, Chris Lemmon [sic], Dale_Grass, and Aaron Sica the right to act this rude towards me.
How were the others rude to you?
-
How'd you do that?
I did it with PowerPoint, a screengrab, and a cross stitch font. And also with malice in my heart, apparently.
And it was my first time seeing Mr. Ottinger on Sale. Very cool.
-
The next item up the line for the current champion is an entertainment center. I noticed the pedestal the magician uses says "El Mouldo", or at least the Mouldo part. Was this a prop loaned from Johnny Carson? One of Carson's somewhat recurring characters was a horrible magician named El Mouldo.
-
Yep, still waiting.
-
Matt O. came so close to defeating the champion, but lost to Jan. If not for buying one of his instant bargains, he could have become the champion. The main thing is, he played a great game, and it is really cool to see what he looked like in 1985.
And great job on the Family Feud-esque image. Looks pretty cool.

Is this what you were trying to say, Vahan? Because in case you still don't get it, Jon's response is much better.
-
Yes, that was what I was trying to say.
-
I'm still waiting for my apology too.
Admitting wrong is one thing. Trying to right it is another.
-
I already did with an edited post.
Okay, I admit I was wrong with what I said about Chris Lemon and PYLdude in this thread.
-
That's not an apology; that's saying you were wrong. Anybody can be wrong, but you apologize when you are sorry for doing something.
-
PYLdude, sorry.
-
PYLdude, sorry.
I'll take it. You still have one to go.
-
Oh yeah, and you, too, Chris Lemon. Sorry.
-

Your extremely halfhearted apology is accepted.

Quoted for lulz.

If we're all done snipping at each other, some answers to some burning questions.
No, I don't have any of the prizes anymore. I used the vacuum cleaner and the luggage for years (though truthfully, I didn't travel a lot back then). Honestly couldn't tell you what became of them, but I haven't had them for decades now. The infamous lawn swing never even touched down at my apartment. When it was delivered, I had the driver take it to WKAR, where I donated it to the station for it to be auctioned as part of an annual fundraising event. This was still several years before QuizBusters, and at the time, I was simply a volunteer over there with a lawn swing I needed to dispose of.
Off camera, Jan was quiet and focused, while Melanie and I were goofing around, having fun and yeah, maybe flirting a little. After the game, I didn't get to speak to Jim Perry beyond a brief handshake, but I still have an image in my head about what an imposingly tall man he was up close.
As for the swing purchase, those of you who understand the game know that I was hoping for some cash, and at the time, I was still playing the game pretty well. Also, if I didn't buy the swing and the scores were still close, then maybe Jan doesn't buy her trip later in the game. I've never thought that the Instant Bargain purchase cost me the game, but I certainly understand why others feel that way.
-
You know, at first, when I saw the first Instant Bargain, I was like "He could probably use luggage, but he shouldn't buy that." Then I saw the luggage up close when they zoomed in and changed my tune. It really looked nice, and I couldn't blame you for purchasing it.
The lawn swing was a fun bit. It really showcased how good Jim Perry was at offering these bargains. He was a great fit for this show.
In the end, you can talk about the what-ifs of what bargains you should or shouldn't have purchased, but the fact of the matter is that you ended the speed round tied and were simply a quicker trigger finger away from replacing Jan. Given how fast you were in the beginning of the game, I liked your chances. Still, getting that close is pretty cool.
It's a shame that you couldn't forecast the future and tell Jim you planned on using your television knowledge to "create a page dedicated to Bill Cullen for all the world to see instantly", without looking insane.
-
It really looked nice,
It was Sale of the Century, not Temptation, y'know.
-
Matt, you took it down to the wire. Well Played.
• Nice to see a rare Jay Stewart cameo in that episode as well.
• Anybody catch Jim's faux pas on the "Old Man River" question -- where is the Monongahela River?
-
A right answer from beating Jan on $ale...a correct Final Jeopardy away from taking down KenJen...
Matt Ottinger : Game Shows : : CCR : The Billboard Charts. Always a bridesmaid, eh?

Very well played Matt. Heck with Instant Bargain details and the like, overall, great game.
-
Always a bridesmaid, eh?
Suddenly I am reminded of the New Yorker Caption Contest.
/more specifically, the generic entry thereto
-
A great game, Matt! Terrific fun to see.
• Anybody catch Jim's faux pas on the "Old Man River" question -- where is the Monongahela River?
In Western Pennsylvania, flowing through the town in which I grew up on its way to Pittsburgh.
-

I thought he was going to mention Uncle Bill specifically in some way.

Uncle Bill might have been hosting TJW against Sale at the time. I'm sure the powers that be wouldn't like any promotion for another then-active host or a potential competing show.

I knew where it was...Jim thought it was on the other side of the state (Philly).
Look at the bright side Matt. Had you won, you might have been the one faced wit the LOVELY "Pizzaz" instant bargain mentioned in the other thread.

At least one market that I know of (New York City) had both shows carried by the same station, WOR Channel 9

I think Mike means the fact that both shows competed against each other in syndication.
/I think WVEC aired them back to back that season, in the 4 pm hour*
//*Or was that TTD?

Brandon gets the square. It was possible to have TJW vs. Sale in 1985-86.
Related to where John went, Sale and The Joker's Wild both aired here on WBNX-55 but it didn't start until early 1986, when WBNX launched.
-
For the record, by the time of this airing, I had already acquired a serious chunk of my board game collections, but while I was a fan, of course, I hadn't specifically pursued Cullen as a subject of research.

Interestingly enough (or not), $otC & TJW aired back to back as well in Boston on channel 66...but instead of being stuck in an afternoon timeslot, they were given the prime spot, airing at 7:00pm/7:30pm respectively...I have great memories of my first partner and I laying up in the bed in our teeny-tiny rented room, eating lots of tuna and ramen noodles and enjoying some game shows!
I think that was when I knew he must have loved me if he was willing to indulge my game show addiction (which he did NOT share) every single weeknight...:)
