Title: Yet another TPiR host candidate

Drew Carey, come on down! You're the next contender to replace Bob Barker as host of "The Price is Right."

CBS and producer FremantleMedia North America have talked to the comic about hosting the long-running daytime gameshow, people familiar with the situation said. Eye already has a relationship with Carey, who's been tapped to host the net's upcoming primetime quizzer "Power of 10" (Daily Variety, March 21).

Not to cut Drew, but this is turning into a joke. It's become add any relevant celebrity or TV personality you can think of. Maybe it's just a dream...that's right, I'm gonna wake up, find Patrick Duffy in my shower and the last eight months will have been a dream!

Oh hell, just give Wilford Brimley the damn show already.  He's already second in screen time after Bob as it is.

I'm starting to wonder if the UK producer (wasn't he rumoured to take the reins of the US version?) is starting to influence the potential candiates.... I see Drew Carey as Joe Pasquale without the squeaky voice.

That said, I think he's VERY capable of doing this seriously, that is, if you, the audience , doesn't have a problem with a womanizing, stripper-loving party guy who can be really, REALLY dirty.

I think he's gonna do great as a funny host who can inject seriousness on "Power of 10".

A serial womanizer at the helm of Price? Sorry, I don't think the audience would ever tolerate that.

Just as there was no way the guy from Truth Or Conseqences would host the daytime version of The Price Is Right.
Also, the guy from Body Language had no chance of landing the job hosting TPiR's nighttime version.

As usual, you don't know what the hell you're talking about. Considering he had a weekly sitcom and improv show than ran concurrently, I think he can handle multi-tasking. The biggest issue would be flying from coast to coast, and other hosts proved it's possible (see Clark, Richard and Rayburn, Gene, and Bergeron, Thomas).

Although that may have been possible, "Eggs" was produced in a single week in 1977..Which would have made it just one trip to Columbus for Bill..According to Matt Ottinger's page for the show.I find it interesting that Bill would take on an "experimental" show like that..And receive a gift of a "Pong" game?

How could Drew be worse than Rosie?  He may hang out with strippers, but it's not exactly like Barker had immaculate morals.  And at least he keeps his politics to himself (I believe he leans to the right but is more libertarian), for the most part.  I would have the same objections I had to Rosie if Bill O'Reilly was under consideration for "TPIR."

How about watching the guy on "Power of 10" before making such a pronouncement?

I think it's fine time to sit back and relax with a big bowl of oatmeal :) Mmmmmmmm!!!

Now everyone thinks that people good for the job are either too old or are dead. Here's 2 people I'll throw in the pot:

1) Doug Davidson (hosted TPIR 94). Could he be better this time around? Haven't seen him in a while.
2) Todd Newton (Did the TPIR DVD game but was he any good at it? Sorry, never bought it.)

At least there's some TPIR experience (yeah but Todd Newton doing it via green screen doesn't account for much I guess).

Yes, but Roger Mudd and Morton Dean are too old and Charles Kuralt too dead.
I know this could never happen, but I can't get the idea from my head of Joe Franklin being given a TPiR audition. I can only imagine how The King of Nostalgia would handle the hosting chores:
"Here, my friends, is the Showcase Showdown wheel, which debuted on this stage in 1975 shortly after the show was sadly moved from its late afternoon time period on the CBS Television Network".
Tom Snyder could do that, too, I suppose.

How about "precisely nothing." Now, hosting the stage show, that's something. But doing the DVD is exactly zero game-show experience. That's acting experience. Which you don't want your host doing.

For what it's worth, as far as Drew's personality goes, he'd be a good candidate.

After a taping of the Drew Carey Show I saw about 7 years ago, he stood by the exit shaking hands and taking all the time he could to do autographs (not just a simple scribble -- he'd sign and date each autograph) and to speak with the people who came to see him.

And when the Rock Hall in Cleveland opened up 11 years ago, though he wasn't officially in the Grand Opening Parade, he actually walked along the parade route down East 9th Street and again shook hands, signed autographs and posed for pictures with anyone who wanted them.

At least Drew Carey (up to a few years ago for sure) has never placed himself on a high pedestal in front of his fans, nor does he go into seclusion and turn off his on-camera persona the moment he hears a director say "that's a wrap" like some former hosts of TPIR.

We'll see how he does on PO10.

ESPN's Dan Patrick mentioned on his show today that he had been approached for an audition by CBS.

Keith Olbermann then related his one experience with game shows. He was apparently asked early in his career to give up a bunch of time to a game show pilot entitled "Your Face or Mine". (Seriously).  Keith declined.

The only ESPN person who could host this, IMHO, is Kenny Mayne. There is no way in the world Dan Patrick can get this job.

The same way he explained that there's no way in you know what that Drew Carey's getting the job.

That's what I figured.

(Damn optimism again.)

Which has me wondering if Adam Wade has been considered.
Surely you mean Adam West, don't you?
[/quote]

At least Wade had a hosting job in MUSICAL CHAIRS (then CBS came to their senses and restored TATTLETALES to the post-MG7x spot).

I've been thinking about it.  This might work out. Let's reinvent the show for a new generation.    Maybe have Pat Kiernan host (off-screen) and have Dan Patrick and Lisa Guererro/Dergan/Whatever do play-by-play.

Don't know why I'm doing this, but Rich Eisen's working for NFL Network these days, where he hosts their "Total Access" studio show.  They're based in LA, so if he was offered "TPIR," it would be in the neighborhood.

Now to add more fuel to the fire--Dan Patrick is leaving ESPN after 18 years.  His final ESPN Radio program will air August 17.

Although a Google News check shows that he repeated on today's program that he didn't audition for "TPIR" and is not interested in the job.

I think I know what job he IS interested in - the vacancy created by Don Imus when he put his foot in it last spring. The Westwood One folks would be stupid not to get him, as the network (and WFAN) have been foundering with a variety of guest hosts over the last three months.

I know that and you know that.  But other people didn't know that.  Just trying to have a little fun.

Is Patrick's radio show any good? He seems too dry for morning radio.

When I listen to it, it's not that bad. (Considering Dan Patrick is opposite Randi Rhodes and I'm an Air America fan, my choice for the afternoon is clear.)

I think he could do well in that slot on The FAN and syndicated across the CBS network...it would be wise to sign him if they give themselves the opportunity. (considering CBS/Westwood One's recent hires and format decisions in NYC, I dunno...)

To each his own, I guess, but Dan Patrick is one of the few people I've heard who can take an exciting topic like sports and make it sound dull.  What's the appeal?
