Well, today was the first day of Jeopardy! tapings at this year's CES. If I remember correctly, most of the press releases have said that the J! set at the CES would become the new permanent set. Well, take a look at these pics.
http://www.ohgizmo.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009...eopardy-at-ces/ (http://\"http://www.ohgizmo.com/2009/01/08/ces-2009-this-is-jeopardy-at-ces/\")
I think it's kinda neat- it looks like a mish mash of a lot of different elements from their previous road shows put together. I have no idea what the purpose of the flatscreen between Alex and the contestants is, though.
-
It has a retro deco feel to it. I like the funky grid behind Alex's lectern and love the new board! The triangles, however, are slowly growing on me, and I can't help but feel like the set as a whole very bare...perhaps there will be more when the show returns to LA?
Also, the spire at center stage (with the HD monitor on it) looks a bit out of place. I'm guessing that's just for the CES?

I'd think so. Whenever they've done road shows that weren't College Championships, Jeopardy has usually had pretty basic, barren sets. I'm sure they'll fill it out in L.A., although I like what I see so far.
-
I dub thee...the Tetris set!
-
Considering how the last 3 1/2 sets have been "square-oriented" (current, sushi, and the 90's grid sets), its different and entirely fresh. And yes, I realize the backdrop behind Trebek's podium is made up of squares.
Speaking of which: does that backdrop behind Alex's podium look like it was stolen from the "Crosswords" set?

Geek brag, kinda: He named one of the puzzle types in Pandora's Box (http://\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandora%27s_Box_(computer_game)\") after a friend of mine.
-
That new J! set looks awsome! Looks pretty bare from the pics. Hopefully the rest will be filled in once it's shipped back to LA. That flatscreen there seems to me some kind of visual aid for video clues & such. We'll find out for sure once we see it in action soon.

Article says March. For whatever reason, I thought it was sooner.

Wouldn't "The Blokken (http://\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blokken\") Set" be a little more appropo?
\GSN should take a look at it- it's an interesting show, plus it's proven like "Lingo" was- 15 years and 3000 eps plus and still going in Belgium..
-
I'd like to get a better look at the contestant podiums. Seems like they've styled them more similarly to the original podiums from the mid-80s, at least from what I can gather from the far away shots.
Anything's an improvement over the old "sushi bar" set, including the current design, but this looks even better.

That wouldn't surprise me, since they are hopefully blocking the set for a hi-def aspect ratio now.
(Not that I expect KOMO to get their head out and start carrying the hi-def feed of the show.)
-
I'd read on the Jeopardy website's forum, that a close reliable source mentioned that the set will not become permanent until Season 26 begins.
I think the signaling lights on the contestant stations are an improvement!
-
I like this one. Very modern. Like the way they used lighting as a decoration in its own right. The only thing I don't like is the return of the separations on the answer board. I liked the effect of the one solid video wall. Made it seem more massive.

Tournament of Champions airs March 11-24 (yes, Wednesday through Tuesday). They're also taping a couple of celebrity episodes, which I believe will air March 9 and 10.

There are some close-ups of parts of the set here (http://\"http://www.lasvegassun.com/photos/galleries/2009/jan/10/what-jeopardy-ces/\").

There's a video of how the new set workshere (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvugLhPDdKM\").
-
Overall, not impressed. The set pieces are nice seperately, but together look like it's been thrown together haphazardly. There's no 'uniformity' to it.
Kinda surprised the 30 screens on the board aren't 16:9. Or, are they? On HD, the graphics look wierd when the money amounts with the border isn't stretched around the full screen.

Let's remember that these are shots of the set as set up at a trade show, and not even one centralized to broadcasting. If they used the exact same elements set up in the exact same way for the more permanent set in Culver City, I'd be very surprised.
-

On the clip that SushiBarSet posted, Harry Friedman says so at about 1:20. I'd have to say I'm not sure about the contestant podia. Trying to get all that info on on Sony (natch) monitors turned sideways makes the "lit up" area pretty narrow and the scores look like a tight fit. Or it could be the much larger font they're using. Yay for that. I really hope Chris is right about this whole thing being a trade show thing, because now I'm kind of getting the feeling that this was less about making an attractive set for Jeopardy! and more about Sony showing how clever they are.
Is that Johnny Gilbert saying "I'm so sexy it hurts"?
-
thanks...missed the video.

...which is exactly what Sony would do at an electronics trade show.

I *really* like the dollar figure font.
-
I must say, I'm turned off by the recurring practice of game show "signals" being built into the actual game monitors. Happened with Crosswords, happens with Wheel and TP:AP, now J! seems to go down that road. Kinda cheapens the feel of the set IMO.

Yes, and it's a pretty small nit to pick, I think. The ring-in like is pretty much the same thing as the old set, just within the monitor instead of neon lights. Plus, the countdown lights are still there and I'm willing to bet the go lights are still on the board, too.
To counter one of your other examples, Wheel has plenty of other flashing lights and whatevers that you need not worry about the scoreboards. Besides, doesn't the pointer still flash?
-
I don't like it as it stands.
HOWEVER, I'll be willing to let it slide if the BG turns red for Double Jeopardy!.

I especially have no problem with doing it if they make it look like it's not all being done on one monitor, and since these new score displays create the illusion of two separate light boxes surrounding a name monitor (in fact, that's what I thought they were when I saw the first pictures), I'm all for it.
-
One more picture I just stumbled across- the new board all lit up and ready for play. Looks like they're using a bolder font for the dollar amounts.

Over at the Jeopardy! website's forum, a couple of posts mention something about Alex making his entrance through two sliding panels (similar to the '96-'02 set). I don't see anything in the pictures I've viewed thus far.
Does anybody know where they are located?

Culver City?
(That's not snark: I'm still suggesting what they brought to CES is not the complete final set. When I see pictures of the set as set up on the Sony lot, I'll go from there.)
-
It would not surprise me if the "Tetris playing area" slides open for Alex to walk through.

Yay, double post!
Kelly from the Clue Crew gives us a tour. (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoJad-CN0xg&feature=channel\")
That big honkin' screen that seems to be placed odd is a permanent piece.

I guess there's gonna be a LOT more visual clues...

He can't kick Kelly out of his podium because he doesn't have one. He's only in charge of his lectern.
