Title: MDP July Tryouts (LA/SD)
Post by: LouKip on July 16, 2008, 01:41:41 AM
I was just curious if anyone here has tried out for Million Dollar Password for its next cycle of shows. I'm considering flying down from San Francisco next Tuesday to give it a shot. I wanted to get an idea of what I could expect. (Haven't checked posts about the earlier NYC tryouts, but will do so after this post.)

I attended an LA audition last week.
Everyone gathers in a theater at the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn.   You are given a number based on how early you arrive. If you haven't filled out the application already (found on the CBS MDP website (http://\"http://www.cbs.com/primetime/million_dollar_password/about/\")), then you fill out the application there.  They will also review the release form with you, but they instruct you not to sign the release form until after they have verbally reviewed the significant items on the form.   Guidelines for proper game play are reviewed (clues that are allowable and those that are forbidden).  Sample words are given out to the group, with one half of the applicants seeing the word while the other half shields their eyes, then people raise their hands and are called upon to give their clue or their guess.  This is just to ferret out any issues that the entire group might have regarding gameplay.
The meat of the audition is being paired up with another applicant to play the game (elimination round style) in front of the contestant coordinators in a separate room.  People are paired by their numbers (#1 with #2, #3 with #4, etc), so the earlier your number is the quicker you will be done with the process.  However, if you want a chance to practice with this stranger who has become your partner, you might prefer to have a later number.
After you play the game both giving and receiving clues, they either dismiss you if they aren't impressed or ask you to stick around for more mock play and more personal interviewing (video-recorded) if they like you.
My number was in the 60's in my audition group, and I finished my 3:30 PM audition around 7:45 PM (lots of waiting).

Good luck!

I tried out in San Diego over the weekend. I went on Saturday for the open call and everything happened pretty much the same way Tim described, they bring you in by pairs in to play the game and do the on-camera interview afterwards. Then if they liked you they called you later in the day to come back Sunday, where they paired you up again and have you play the game in front of cameras and the producers. After they show the tapes to the higher-ups they will then call people for the show. They're scheduled to tape in early August and will be doing it in LA this time. It looks like they're really trying to find good players who can play the game well, and of course people with lots of energy. If you decide to go try to arrive early or else you'll probably be waiting for a few hours, but they did show episodes of show while we waited.

I don't know where else tryouts may be happening, but apparently the next cycle of shows will be taped in Los Angeles, specifically at CBS Studio Center (aka CBS Radford) in Studio City on August 2-4.  This information comes from the On Camera Audiences website.

At the very least, playing in Los Angeles gives them access to a larger pool of celebrities, so we can only hope that it will provide a larger base of competent ones.

In the past, (Millionaire, Am's Got Talent) Reege has been "The Starter Host."  Now that the show is on its way (and in LA), maybe he'll assume the same status with MDP.

Agreed.

Plus it will make it easier for Neil Patrick Harris and Betty White to become semi-regulars or last minute fill-ins since they are both pretty much left coasters, leaving the clueless Rachel Rays about 2800 miles behind.

That is,.. if Fremantle ever thinks about inviting players who "Get It®" back again.

I'm currently in Chicago awaiting a callback after my tryout today. The audition went just like everyone said, except I think it was left out that we had to take a 5 word test (3 clues given by the CCs for each word) that I'm nearly certain you had to get 4/5 or 5/5 to pass. After passing, my partner and I pretty much rocked, getting 5/5  on just about every set of words (taking 17 seconds on one.) So wish me luck guys!

Interesting turn of phrase I noted: one of the folks running the show didn't use the term "contestant"; rather, he called the players "these people we shape into characters."  Take whatever you may from that.

Also, Ginger Simpson and a couple of other head honchos were witnessing the tryouts today.  I resisted the urge to wish her "lots of love."

And Chad, I hope you rocked it hardcore.

/wasn't able to give "Database" in 3 clues

That seems antithetical to the spirit of Password. I mean, if I can just spell out Y-A-M with my body, what's the point of having passwords?

To continue how the process works, today, we played the game in front of the camera and a CC again. Also sitting there were a few producers, like the aforementioned Ginger, a guy named Vin, and two others. We played a few maingames, and then two of the $10,000 levels of the endgame. The coordinators put me with my partner from yesterday, with whom I thought getting five in seventeen seconds was pretty good. I think breaking that was pretty neat.

So, yeah, taping is August 2, 3 and 4. And if I don't make it, there's always Detroit Millionaire auditions on the 13th. ;) But fingers crossed!

Vin is Vincent Rubino, the Exec Producer....he has more pull here than Ginger.

I'd bet heavily the other two were Rich Sirop and Graham Shaw. Rich comes from Millionaire with Vin, Graham comes from....Temptation. Don't hold that against him...he's actually a really decent guy who does get game shows well.

Apparently, there are more auditions this weekend in Atlanta at the Marriott Suites Atlanta Midtown tomorrow and Saturday from 10-6 pm. For a show apparently taping next weekend, isn't it odd to have auditions so close to the tape date?

/Probably just me wanting less people in the pool.
//Just waiting for that phone to ring. -_-

I'm an Atlanta native, and I found out about the auditions yesterday through a casting coordinator who has nothing to do with MDP.

The casting coordinator in question is the same one who handled casting for the first season of "Duel" (and is currently casting "Opportunity Knocks").  She sent me an e-mail at 4:30a with a flyer promoting the auditions, adding that her "friends at CBS" are currently casting.

Given the odd dating of the auditions, would it be possible that MDP may cover flights/hotel for those who tried out in Chicago and Atlanta?

I was selected as a contestant for the original taping in March in NYC, (but did not get on the show due to time constraints) For that taping they provided room and board...hotel and meals, but not transportation costs. I had to purchase my own airfare. Maybe they have changed the circumstances for taping in LA, but thats how it went the first round.
On a side note, has anybody been contacted yet and given a bonafide offer to be on the new tape dates?

Thanks to all for the info. I did end up going to L.A. and attending the 3:30 tryouts. The process was pretty much as Tim wrote, with the exception that there was an intermediary round of cuts between the 5-password quiz and the mock game-playing in a separate room. All the people who passed the initial quiz had to stand up and deliver a 30-second spiel (name, age, occupation, interesting factoid about yourself) to Carly and Matt, the main people running the tryouts. Evidently, my spiel was not fascinating enough to be asked to participate in the mock game. I got out of there at 6:00. The next tryouts were scheduled for 6:30, but who knows if they were able to start on time, considering they were just getting started on the mock game for the first round of folks at 6:00.

Congrats on a great performance, Chad. I really do hope they pick people who know how to play the game for the next set of shows. I wanted to throw a brick at my TV when Steve Schirripa and Sara Evans were on.

He is.  He and Graham have been at Fremantle for at least a couple of years now, and have worked together on a variety of projects, most notably Game Show Marathon, Temptation, and Million Dollar Password.  However you feel about any of those shows, know that Chris and Graham are as familiar with (and fond of) what's gone before as many of us.  I would never fault them directly for a revival I didn't like, and I'm glad that they have a vehicle like MDP that is enjoying significant success.

Title: MDP July Tryouts (LA/SD)

I had the opportunity to participate in the Atlanta auditions Saturday.  Here's a brief overview...

-- The auditions were held at the Marriott Midtown Suites in Atlanta.  A nice hotel where parking was a pain -- you could park in the hotel's underground lot for $18, a next door lot for $10, or park at a nearby Starbucks or Einstein Brothers and see if you'll get towed.

-- I did my application online via CBS.com, and printed it out to bring to the audition.  I was told the application handed out this past weekend was different than the online version, but I saw no differences.

-- Turnout for Saturday was about 200, while Friday was under 100.

-- In my audition group, the contestant coordinator (a nice man named Anthony) asked us how we heard about the auditions.  Four people (myself and three friends from quizbowl and trivia contests) mentioned we heard about the auditions via an e-mail from a casting director for other shows.  About half the group (there were 35-40 people in my group) saw an ad on Craigslist.  The rest heard about the auditions from V-103, an urban music FM owned by CBS, which started promoting the auditions Friday afternoon.

-- Anthony mentioned the V-103 ads, claiming he called the station and asked about promoting the auditions, only to get blown off the first time around.  CBS Corporate then contacted the station, who started promoting the tryouts at will.  Also, Anthony claimed that a caller describing the auditions on the afternoon show proceeded to give away SOME OF THE ANSWERS DURING THE INITIAL TEST before getting cut off.

-- We had the five-question initial quiz.  We were then photographed, paired into teams of two, and played mock MDP before producers.

Total testing time: 15 minutes.  Amount of time I was at the hotel:  EIGHT HOURS

It was somewhat disorganized -- I have a feeling the casting directors didn't think so many people would pass the initial test (Of the 35-40 original test-takers in my group, only 5-6 failed).  Add that with the callbacks from Friday, and it was a pretty busy scene at the hotel.

In the end, I had a decent audition, but I didn't receive a callback for Sunday.  Oh well -- probably couldn't fly to Los Angeles this coming weekend anyway, so no loss.  It also didn't help that I complained about a glare during my mock MDP round (I wear glasses, and the glare from the lights prevented me from seeing a word for a few seconds).

Good luck to those who did reach the final stages!

Anyone know if the earthquakes today will have any immediate impact on the audition today? Also, since it appears no one has gotten a call yet, does anyone else think that a possible four-day spread between notification and tape date is kind of short notice? Is that commonplace with today's shows?

Anyone know if the earthquakes today will have any immediate impact on the audition today? Also, since it appears no one has gotten a call yet, does anyone else think that a possible four-day spread between notification and tape date is kind of short notice? Is that commonplace with today's shows?
[/quote]
Okay. Serious advice time. Stop looking at the phone.

You're waiting for a call that odds are is not going to come. If you took and passed the test, and interviewed for producers, then you've done everything you possibly can to be a contestant on this or any other show.

If they are interested in you, if you fit the bill based on your intelligence, your looks, your personality, or your ability to know the alphabet backwards and forwards, they will call you and you will be a contestant on the show. If the call does not come, do not look at it as an invalidation of your dedication to the game or ability to play.

They're going to interview hundreds of prospective contestants for roughly 24 spots. Relax.

My concern with Ferguson is this: The few times I've watched his show (Conan man here, when I'm up that late), he gives me this absent-minded vibe. Not what I want with money on the line. Also, I have concerns over the potential for Letterman Factor: trying to be funny and stay in "character" instead of hunkering down and doing his job.

I like the guy, so I'd love to be wrong on both counts. Certainly of the three people I mentioned, he's the one I'd play with first.

I think that's more the nature of the show.  If you're watching someone with a funny accent at 12:35 in the morning, you're probably not interested in something cerebral.  I would be a little about the Letterman factor, though.

My initial reaction was Ferguson would either be really good or fail spectacularly.

Carolla I'd avoid like the plague...It would be interesting with Keoghan and Chen (Chen does do news, so that could be an advantage I think), Chandler and Ferguson are wildcards to me (but Ferguson is good at improvisation- he only has general notes for his opening monologues- so that could be an advantage too), and of course Betty would be the premiere partner..

I'm reminded of his appearance on the first set of Celebrity Millionaire episodes.  After screwing around all week and being the last one to make the hot seat, the only reason he didn't win a million dollars is that he let Regis talk him out of pulling the trigger on one he was pretty sure he knew.  Left a lot of people with the impression that he's a LOT smarter than he pretends to be.  The question as always is whether he'll use this opportunity to play the fool or whether he'll buckle down because there's a real human being (maybe even someone we know!) standing across from him who could use the money.

As for Shatner, I'd be worried even if he was in his prime, much less if he's looking more "befuddled" these days.  He was infamously a lousy Pyramid player, and despite a pretty lengthy list of celebrity game show appearances, I don't know that he ever did any incarnation of Password. (Turns out he did do You Don't Say and Snap Judgment, however.)  I don't think word association is his bag.

Would it be too much for a contestant to ask the celebrity to do their best and not be like their "character" that they portray on TV?  What Chad or somebody doesn't need is for Jamie (or anybody else) to act like a stupid asswipe during the game and screw it up for the contestant.

As the one who brought up the Chicago auditions initially, it just didn't seem right to start a separate thread for that since we were already talking about where else auditions might be happening.

Someone brought up the applause in my grouping on Saturday, and those in charge said the after-each-word applause in New York was spontaneous, not prompted.  I will note, however, that I did hear the audience get instructions this time around that they could applaud lightly after a correct word if they wanted to, but by no means did they have to.

(Anyone think the topic subject should be changed to something less specific, since this is really just Password season two discussion?)
