Title: Brother, can you spare a million?
Post by: catkins522 on January 09, 2004, 07:53:49 PM
I saw Access Hollywood on the ticker...

"The Wayne Brady Show" will be cancelled as of this season.

You know, I like Wayne Brady and liked his format.  However, there will be more time for Fremantle to screw up another classic game.

I think some or all of the stations that carry Wayne's show will replace it with Tony Danza's upcoming gabfest. I don't see Danza doing much better ratingswise than Wayne Brady did, but we'll see what happens.

First of all, I really hate it when people say the words TALK SHOW.  There is nothing wrong with it.

Second of all, I thought that Brady was doing well... didn't he even get an Emmy.  Tis a shame.

I thought it was holding its own as well, but according to rec.arts.tv, it only pulled a 1.0 in the ratings. Damn, I was thinking it had at least a 2.5.

Well....Wayne's show wasn't particularly special, and I really thought he dragged Drew's Line down a lot....but he was waaaaay ahead of..say...Leno.

Yep, he and his show won Emmys last year, and his show was doing OK at the time (although my local station did drop it after the first season and replaced it with Jack & Ali, smart move...........NOT!) Many stations picked it up for the 2nd year, but the ratings didn't reciprocate. It makes ya wonder, with the all the failed talk shows the past 3 years, and with game shows seemingly making a comeback ratings wise, where are all the new game shows at?

FINAL JEOPARDY!

I think the bottom line on Wayne Brady is that audiences liked him, but he never could attract any worthy guests. There's only so many reality guests you can have before you need to bring out an A-Lister. The premiere this season of Ellen Degeneres' show just shows what can be done in daytime if you can get the big guests like Jennifer Aniston and Justin Timberlake.

But the man is an entertainer and I know he'll continue to do well on the road.

Never watched it myself, but resented that in NY, it got the 10 AM slot on WABC, while a certain other former GS regular's talk show that also debuted in 2002 (gee, I wonder who?) was the one to get buried in the wee hours...despite the fact that it was the successor to the former 10 am show!

Same here in my Chicago market. This is also a good reason as to why Ellen's talk show (overrated as it is) is getting buried in the 10 A.M. time slot.

Does NBC 5, ABC 7, and WCIU have a clue? If a game show could not dethrone TPiR in the time slot for 22 years, it's a pretty safe bet that a talk show won't even come close.

The Inquisitive One

(I figured in the fact that, for about 3 years or so, TPiR did not come on @ 10AM in my area because of Donahue.)

I don't get that logic. In today's ratings battles, talk shows get much better ratings compared to game shows so it would stand to reason that a talk show would stand a much better chance of getting good ratings against TPiR as opposed to another game show.

And if it's king of that market's timeslot, then the aim would be to get as many eyeballs as possible...so you counterprogram with a show not like what's on the other channel....thus, a talk show.

I mean, there's only so many formats available out there for daytime mornings. Soap opera, court shows and talk shows are the most popular. I'm not surprised they picked a talk show nor can I blame them.

Actually, in Chicago "The View" regularly beats "TPIR" in total households, due to the fact that there are a lot of people who still watch WLS from wire to wire every day.  But I believe it's one of the few markets--if not the *only* market--that "The View" beats "TPIR."

And as for the comment on why the syndicators haven't turned more to game shows, until "WWTBAM," "Feud" and "Pyramid"'s upturns this season, there wasn't much interest--and since decisions on what shows to market are made in advance, plans were being made in other genres, most notably the makeover/how-to genre which has been exclusive PBS and cable's bailiwick, thanks to "Trading Spaces."  No new game shows have yet to be announced, but wait until next year.

I'm not disputing your word, because you're pretty informative about game shows and all, but how come you seem so confident in next year being the "big year?" Just a curious question.

I agree...w/all the crappy "trash talk" we had to sit through in the mid-90s (and often at the expense of game shows), Wayne's show was a breath of fresh air and solid proof that talk show producers are now focusing more on celebrity chat formats (Wayne, Ali & Jack, et al.) and self-help (Dr. Phil, John Walsh).

The syndicators are going to notice "WWTBAM," "Feud" and "Pyramid"'s ratings gains this year.  Also (although the trend to double runs may curb that), Disney, Fremantle/Tribune and Sony may be seriously considering stablemates for those above shows to offer as a package.

Disney doesn't have much in its library to offer ("The All-New Win, Lose or Draw?"--and "WBSM" could only be a late-night show on broadcast TV if done as in its original conception), but Sony and Fremantle/Tribune have lots of titles to consider (and yes, probably screw up).  Or they could even pull out a new concept or import a format that we haven't seen yet ("Fifteen-to-One," for example, which is now owned lock, stock and barrel by Fremantle).

All conjecture, of course (and "big year" would mean September 2005, in case there's any confusion).

Dr. Phil will probably be the only one of the four shows you name that will see next season(Wayne and John Walsh have been axed, and Ali and Jack is tanking worse than those two and I don't see that getting renewed).

Personally I think a syndicated WBSM could do very well....I really liked that show and thought it was the best quiz aside from WWTBAM since The Challengers.

Oh, and what did Fremantle aquire that they now own 15-to-1 ? Oh, and I really, really hope they don't try to bring that one overseas. It works fine in the UK, but it's fairly obvious that shows that work in the UK often will fall flat on their face over here.

If we do get a "big year" in 2005 I'm hoping for WBSM, Wipeout, and Russian Roulette in syndication - but there's absolutely no reason to think that that will happen. Just dreaming, I guess.

Well, it's a shame that "Wayne Brady" is getting canned. I really liked his show but I never got to watch it often for where I live, it was up against back-to-back episodes of "Feud". What makes it even worse is that this time this fall, it's getting replaced w/ Tony Danza. IMO, quoting Mr. Danza,
"ay, ay, oh, ay" Disney!....what were you thinking?

Trying to get it slightly back on topic here, you know Wayne Brady was not the only talk show host to win an emmy one  year and be cancelled the next. As Bob Eubanks used to say it on "Trivia Trap", can you answer this trivia question?...

-What show won the emmy for best talk show in 1982 only for it to be cancelled the following year? I'll give you a clue, this host has been a celebrity guest (like Brady) on a couple of game shows.

Wouldn't be Gary Collins, as Hour Magazine lasted midway through the 1988-89 season.

The Richard Simmons Show, a 1980-83 syndicated half hour, is the only other host I can think of that fits the criterion.

Letterman's daytime show was in 1980, so it ain't that one.

William G. Stewart's Regent Productions.  Action Time still controlled the overseas format rights, but the show disappered off their web site last fall, so I assume Fremantle now has full control.

Hey, remember "Woman to Woman"? It won the 1984 Emmy for Best Talk Show, and that was probably gone right by the time Oprah would go national.

The host of that show now runs PBS--Pat Mitchell.

ObGameShow:  Mitchell also hosted WTTG Washington's local show "Panorama," also hosted at one time by "Twenty-One" revival host Maury Povich (stretch).

ObGameShow:  PBS hasn't aired a game show in the years Mitchell's run the network.

Re:  Wayne Brady...my wife and I were pretty big fans of his until we saw him appear last season as a celebrity judge on Star Search.  He was so overly critical and mean-spirited in his comments that he came across surprisingly egotistical.  Since then it's been hard to enjoy him on his other shows.  Maybe he was just having an off-night.
