No, no, no!!!  Two nights a week is plenty.  NBC, remember what happened when ABC overdid it with WWTBAM.  You can't afford to jeopardize DonD's future.

Let's hope this only lasts those two weeks.

However, if you click on the link for each episode listed on The Futon Critic, you get... info quoted from NBC's own press releases.  If that's not an official source, I don't know what is.

Want to try for three today, Mark?

Check the official site.  It's right there:
http://www.nbc.com/Deal_or_No_Deal/ (http://\"http://www.nbc.com/Deal_or_No_Deal/\")

I don't think the three-day format will last long, but we'll see.  I think this show might be better as twice a week in the weekly format though.

For now, the 3-day-a-week thing is only for a couple weeks, but the M/F airings are currently slated to last thru at least the end of April.

NBC is miliking 'DONO' dry, just as ABC did with 'Millionaire' did back in the 2000-2002 years.  And guess what?  Both networks do these types of things when they were/are in the dumper ratings-wise with few hits and an impatient parent company seeing their profits diminished by the low primetime ratings elsewhere on the schedule.  NBC is actually touting the strong ratings of its Friday night drama Conviction, a Dick Wolf show that got lower ratings than the Friday night show it replaced, Law & Order: Trial By Jury (pathetic!).  So even though I'm sad to see 'DOND' get 'Millionaired' I can understand why it's happening: NBC suits are desperate, and desperate people do desperate things like eat their young if it means improving the 18-49 demo by a tenth of a rating point or so.  As soon as NBC gets a big hit or two on the air NBC will bestow on 'DOND' the same treatment ABC is giving 'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' right now: barely-promoting and taking for granted the one show that for a year or so kept the network present in the Top 20 now that it has hit shows to spare (Lost, Housewives, Dancing with the Stars, etc.).  It's the vicious circle of primetime gameshow life! :(

OK..lemme get this straight.

DOND is doing 3 a week for a couple of weeks. We're speculating that 3 a week might become "permanent" (well, as permanent as anything is on network TV).

This, from the same crowd that would like to see a syndie version of the show. A syndie version would run how many days a week?

"Millionairing" WWTBaM didn't hurt the syndie/long term fortunes of the franchise. I don't think DoND will be affected too badly by triple-pumping it.

Have an ovaltine and chill out.

What crowd is that? I certainly didn't sign that petition. For my money, the show only works in teeny doses, and twice a week for 23 weeks a year is about it.

No, but it certainly did take a long time before the syndicated version aired. And I think that's what the doomsayers are worried about. Cause there's no better game show on the air than "Deal or No Deal." <eyeroll>

You're right, Jay, they need to relax.

Yeah, I know, and my reply was also for effect. My point is that I don't think a show like Deal or No Deal would work five days a week, at least in the current format. Then again, it works in a half-hour format in England and Australia.

And six days a week in the UK--and they've just moved the Saturday airing into prime time, where it beat ITV last week in the ratings and breathed down BBC1's neck, something that Channel 4 shows are not supposed to do, them being the "minority channel" (as in minority of the audience, not race) and all.

True...However the difference between a syndicated game show and a prime time network show is that at least on a syndicated version of a popular show, the odds are better that the show will run at least a full season and in the same timeslot -- even if the ratings start to flounder.

There's going to be a syndie DoND -- that's my feeling.

I'm, of course, all for it; it's just going to be how NBCU alters the game to fit a syndie version (i.e. getting rid of the models and replacing contestants, cutting number of briefcases down, etc.) which will keep the show in a better place to survive.

In other words -- they need to adapt parts to the Noel version. :)

EDIT:  Not that the Aussie version would be bad, either, but the whole nighttime US has been based more on drama then fast play, which is from what I've seen the Aussie version is based on.  The only thing that the US draws off the Aussie is the amount of the audience seated.

Have they even been the same models?  Seems to me that some new ones appeared when the show returned, and I can't be sure there haven't even been changes since the show returned a couple weeks ago.

In a bigger sense, there probably would be some interest in the statistics over the long run on a show like this.   Not necessarily where the cases were located, but average bank offers, winnings, stuff like that.

This early in the show's run, it's actually pretty likely that there are some notable outliers. That doesn't mean a thing re: luck, of course.

Oh, and nothing against having models, but as another straight man, they hardly register at all when I'm watching the show. I'm just weird about 26 ladies all with the same waist, the same outfit, and the same gobs of makeup, I guess.

If you're watching the show just for the models, I think we could all pitch in for a subscription to Playboy and a year's worth of "Towel of the Month" club from Bed Bath and Beyond.

From a realistic point of view, Randy said in an earlier post how much expenses are written up for 26 models.  Think of what is spent on Barker's Beauties, and then multiply that by 6.5.

Do you think a syndicated version could hold on to such a budget?  I doubt it.  I'd rather see 20-26 contestants that stay on awhile, root each other on and hopefully win big money.  Besides, the UK version has had some cute women contestants as well, so I don't think there's a big loss there.

The other thing that endears me is that the contestant selection on UK's Deal is that it's so diverse.  Old/young/male/female/white/black/brown/purple/etc.  -- it's all there.  To me, it's daytime happy tv that's been missing from the landscape for awhile.

Now go back drooling about Claudia.

Silly, silly Dr.  Have you seen the rest of NBC's primetime ratings lately? Hint, look near the toilet. They'd have the Donald, the Martha, AND the cast of SNL as models if they thought they could cross-promote a show to bleed viewers from one show to the next.

Silly, silly Dr.  Have you seen the rest of NBC's primetime ratings lately? Hint, look near the toilet. They'd have the Donald, the Martha, AND the cast of SNL as models if they thought they could cross-promote a show to bleed viewers from one show to the next.

I give it till May sweeps for the next celebrity blitz.

And Trix are for kids.  Let me put it in your parlance ... I'd forecast ratings doom for DoND if it goes the celebrity blitz route as Millionaire and Weakest Link did -- and we all know what happened to those shows in the US market.

I am well aware of where NBC's ratings currently are, and I noted - as you probably did - that DoND is about the only show NBC has in the Top 20 at the moment.  The jury's still out on how long it can sustain itself there, but DoND will be a stain on the toilet paper if it goes the celeb route.  You can call me "silly" all you like, but we have a pattern of behaviour here.  We watched Millionaire because it had a chance to change the lives ordinary Joes for the better.  DoND has the same appeal, and it uses the same brand of drama to do it that Regis used on his show.  We stopped watching when Millionaire became driven by celebrities, and we'll do the same if that happens to DoND.

I read in USA Today Wednesday (print edition, can't find a link) that the Monday April 3rd ep is going to be 2 hours....my guess is this is where they were planning to air the Apprentice mid-season recap episode but decided they aren't going to do one this time...

Some potentially encouraging news:  Howie was a guest on Ellen DeGeneres' show today (look for a repeat on Oxygen in a week) and when she asked him if DonD would ever expand to five nights (that's NIGHTS) a week, he doubted it would, that two nights was plenty and these Wednesday shows are indeed "special" events that hopefully aren't slated to be permanent.

That is true - NBC announced it yesterday. I was just coming here to post that.

Also, on Friday 4/14, the show's usual models won't be on.  The cases will be held by Miss USA contestants (the Miss USA pageant airs a week later on, you guessed it, NBC).

Well, beats them having a week of Miss USA contestants playing (though not by much) . Anyone remember Donny-mid with them? That week, Jillian Barberie was the SMART player.

If they don't open the briefcase with grace and style, do they get points deducted?

And are we going to get treated to another appearance from the owner of the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, who's the star of another NBC series?  His ratings used to be yooge.
