In case anyone wants to qualify for the show, the hotline is available beginning at 7 PM EST & runs untill 3 AM EST each day through Tuesday February 24. Good luck.
-
Good luck to everyone trying! I am forever ineligible now. ;-)

Same here. But good luck all!

For those of us Canadians who can't play... do let us know what (if anything) is different from the last time!
Cheers,
Ryan :)
-
It's not all that different from the phone game you've grown to know and love (or hate).
I have already blown one qualifying chance on a poorly-answered geography question. I'll make that Hot Seat yet.
-
It went exactly the way I remembered the old phone game... Regis says hi, you enter birth date and last four digits of soc sec number (but not gender or zip code,) and the questions start.
I blew it, too. On a very easy first question. Too excited, I guess...
-
It's not all that different from the phone game you've grown to know and love (or hate).
Indeed...one major difference is that the Mushmouth question lady is gone, and now Fred (the guy who reads the rules at the beginning) asks them...he's easier to understand, IMO.
I have already blown one qualifying chance on a poorly-answered geography question. I'll make that Hot Seat yet.
Best of luck...I wanna see some of us Invisioners on the show, anyway! :-)

I blew an easier first question, IDing the Chicago Board of Trade as Trade Board of Chicago, oh well.
-
I made it all the way to Question 5, but choked on deciding which 2 out of the 4 went first and second. Darn, if it were like horse racing, I woulda boxed my first 2 choices!
Speaking of winning millions, The Mega Millions Jackpot is now at least $171 MILLION Dollars for Tuesday Night's Multi-state Lottery Game!!
-
Made it to question 4 and blew it by choosing "logically" between the two middle answers.
Arrange these monuments by the order in which they were dedicated, starting with the earliest.
1. Vietnam Veterans Memorial
2. Jefferson Memorial
3. Washington Monument
4. Lincoln Memorial
3-2-4-1 *bzzzt*
The years: 1982, 1943, 1885, 1922
I should have remembered from before -- by question 4, the "logical" order (by presidential term, in this case) is almost always the wrong order.
-
Indeed...one major difference is that the Mushmouth question lady is gone, and now Fred (the guy who reads the rules at the beginning) asks them...he's easier to understand, IMO.
I totally agree! He speaks at a very slow pace also, making the experience less rushed from when I remember playing it last.
Unfortunately, my John Travolta movie trivia is not up to snuff, knocking me out on question two :-\
Ah well, tomorrow is another day.
-
Got to Question 3. Don't remember if the question was to put the events in chronological order starting with the earliest, or the most recent:
Queen Elizabeth II's acension to the throne
Susan B. Anthony's leading the suffragist movement
Joan Of Arc's Invasion of France (or was it when she was canonized)]
Cleopatra's reign
I dislike not being able to see the answers in front of me. Seven more available tries.

-
I made it to question 2:
Place these barnyard animals in order of smallest to largest:
A. Sheep B. Turkey C. Cow D. Duck
I think I said D-A-B-C
D'oh! >:o
-
I blew it on the first question.
The Marriage of Figaro, folks.
-Joe R.
-
I made it to #3, which was "Put these words in order of when they first came into common usage, starting w/the most recent":
1. Liposuction
2. Sound byte
3. (?) don't remember
4. Jeep
What did me in? I forgot to start w/the most recent, and put them in order according to the earliest. :-( Oh well, there's still tomorrow...

I have no practice on these things. The first time around, I wasn't eligible because I worked for AT&T. Now I'm good and unemployed and able to try out. Unfortunately I wrote the answers down not in the order I got them, but the order they should have been in. Then I couldn't remember which one was which.
Better luck tomorrow!
-
Well, I got knocked out on the fourth question, but I'm not sure why.
Put the following events in London history in chronological order, starting with the earliest
1 - The Great Fire
2 - Tower of London built
3 - First subway built
4 - the Black Death
I'm about 95% sure I put 2-4-1-3, which after checking should be right
1 - 1666
2 - 1066
3 - around 1870, near as I can tell
4 - 1665
Anyone else get this one?
-
I got to Q3, which was about placing dances in chronological order, based on their introduction.
My sister tried qualifying as well. Let's just say she won't make the show soon. Instead of punching the numbers in with the keypad, she said the numbers. While making dinner, I heard "3 2 1 4!" from the other room. I told her she had to punch the answer in. By the time I told her, the 10 seconds expired.
-
Oh that hurts. God it hurts.
Made it to question 5.
Put these 4 monuments in order of their dedication, starting with the earliest.
1) Mt. Rushmore
2) Iwo Jima Memorial
3) Crazy Horse Memorial
4) Vietnam Veterans Memorial
I enter 3-1-2-4
"I'm Sowwy, That is an incorrect answer"
Whoops. I mixed up 1 and 3 as the correct batch is:
1)1925
3)1948
2)1954
4)1982
5 more chances for greatness. I did this almost each and every time on the previous phone games, too. Hit 4 or 5 and just bomb horribly.
I'm so glad that mushmouth is gone. I felt more comfortable with Tom's reading as he was clear, concise and didn't ask me put these GUFERBLS in order starting with the ERLAtiest.
-
Ag! I made it to the fifth question!
"Place these novels in order of their country of origin, starting with the Atlantic Ocean, and going east:
1) One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
2) Catcher In The Rye
3) Quo Vadis
4) Shogun
I had no clue, but I guessed they were as follows: 1) Russia, 2) England 3) Greece (Rome was close enough, apparently) 4) Japan, so I went with 2-3-1-4.
...and now that I know that Catcher was set in the US, I realize my error. Ah well. It was exciting, tho! :)
-
I missed on the first question, about some 1994 Mexico revolution thing.
-
Well, I finally got approved to be on this board. :) Hello to all.
I blew it on the first question. LOL but my boyfriend answered all 5 and qualified on the first shot. We picked the first tape date. Now all we have to do is beat 10,000 to 1 odds that they actually call him. :) At least there's no second qualification this time. If we get the call on Thursday, I'll post. Btw, did anyone see me on Dateline NBC on Friday night? ;)
-Brent (Brad)
-
Supposedly missed a Roy Rogers question here. I forget what his nickname was, The King of (something) ...I entered 1324 and know I was right but it said I wasn't. Anyways, it was my first question. Oh well, try again Tuesday.
-
Argh. These are much tougher than times past.
I had the question mentioned above about farm animals, which was deceptively easy.
My third question, which I blew, was this:
Novels (earliest released to recent)
1. Love Story
2. Dr. Zhivago
3. Sophie's Choice
4. The Joy Luck Club
Which proves that these questions are only easy when you know all four answers. I didn't know when Sophie's Choice was made or released as a movie, and I had never heard of Love Story. I went by movie release dates for the rest and said 2-1-4-3. The correct answer, after research, flips the last two.
Post your questions, folks!
-
Just got finished with my call; I missed my second question, which was something like:
Put these artists in order of their first Billboard Top Ten hit, starting with the most recent.
1) New Kids On The Block
2) Nelly Furtado
3) Juice Newton
4) Britney Spears
My wrong answer was 2-4-3-1.
If I'd been allowed a Double Dip, I'd have gone with 2-4-1-3 (IOW, Juice hit before NKOTB, not after)... or was I wrong about Nelly and Britney, too?
I had no problems with the instructions and the reading of the questions, even though I used my home speakerphone. (I prefer to use my headset-equipped phone in work (lucky for me, I'm usually still working when the lines open @ 4 PM PT), but in prior years I've played the phone game from pay phones in a restaurant, at a highway rest stop, and even in a casino in Reno.)
Esoteric Eric, back at it tomorrow
-
Well, I missed my first (and probably best) chance at getting on the show. I missed my third question which asked for the events of the Watergate scandal in order.
Even if I do make it through any of these calls, I still have a thousands-to-one chance to get on the show. Sigh.

-
I guess we're all crapping out here. I caught three out of five, but got waxed trying to order four New Jersey cities in geographical order. For $10 million, I'd make 'em hard, too.

I got knocked out on query one on this a question related to Napoelon and these choices:
1. Of
2. Grand
3. Warsaw
4. Duchee
I chose 4-1-2-3
I realized as soon as I typed those in, it should have been 2-4-1-3.
Oh well...try again tomorrow!
-
I got knocked out on Question 3 myself, and I'm not quite sure why.
The question had to do put the following groups in chronological order of when they had their first #1 hit:
1) Wilson Phillips
2) Boyz II Men
3) Aerosmith
4) Culture Club
I answered 3-4-1-2 because I figured Aerosmith had a #1 hit back in the 70's and I know that Wilson Phillips were #1 with Hold On in 1990 before Boyz II Men came around in 1991. But I'm starting to think that maybe Aerosmith didn't get a #1 hit until after Culture Club...
Trick question!!! Aghghgh

Question two failure. I moved Temple University way out west.
-
Blew it on #2 myself.
"Put the following magazines in the order they first debuted"
1 - TV Guide
2 - Rosie
3 - Good Housekeeping
4 - Wired
I knew that Good Housekeeping and TV Guide were going to a problem. I blindly guessed 1-3-2-4.
Nope, 3-1-2-4.

I think the odds are 1 in 1096 if you fiddle with the numbers they give in the rules. Maybe I'm wrong, but those are great enough odds for me.
Your odds are even better when you consider of the 1096, a good portion of them won't answer the phone in time.

Actually, your problem is (at least) that Wired came out long before Rosie. (Sure, it was, what, McCall's? before, but it debuted AS ROSIE just in the last couple years, and Wired's been around a decade.) So your string should end 4-2.

I can see why I didn't bother to qualify last night. Some of the questions I saw here I couldn't figure out anyway. Oh well! Better luck later tonight Invisioners!

You KNOW you were right? ABSOLUTELY sure?
Man, I'd suggest doing at least a modicum of homework before whining in a public forum that the game screwed you, because the VERY FIRST HIT on Google searching on "roy rogers nickname" returns "King Of The Cowboys" in the sample text.
Good luck tomorrow! :)

Yeah, you really got screwed...Aerosmith's first #1 hit was "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" from the _Armageddon_ soundtrack, in 1998, so the proper sequence is 4-1-2-3.
-
Well, at least most of you made it past question #1; I can't even say that!
However, a friend of mine called about two hours after I did and I not only knew her first question but her second (the one she missed out on)! AAAAHHHHH! Who'd have known that an automated phone test would be so nervewracking? :)
Just for kicks, here was my question:
Put the following words in order to form a popular environmental phrase:
1. Locally
2. Globally
3. Act
4. Think
I punched in 3-1-4-2. BZZZZ! As my friend told me, I should've done 4-2-3-1. Stupid phrase (well, now I'll never forget it!).
Better luck tonight (I hope; I can't do much worse!),

Ah, yes! You are correct, fine sir.
I did put Wired before Rosie when I played the game though. As a techgeek, I had some reasonable idea when Wired came out. :-) My problem lied in the fact that I forgot how long Good Housekeeping has been around for and I simply blanked.

Second question. Put playing cards in order of value in blackjack, from high to low (ace was in the choices). Something anyone who's watched "Gambit" would know. I press the on-off buttons above the numbers on my cordless phone keypad instead of the numbers. I screw myself. Wonderful.
At least there's tonight.

The ace button was the first button *I* intended to hit.
The other cards were a jack and two number cards.

Hi All,
Been lurking awhile, but new Millionaire is enough to get me posting. I washed out on my second question (put several novels in order including Ann of Green Gables and Wuthering Heights), but my wife zipped right through hers.
Slightly off topic--I see several of the group have been in the hot seat and are ineligible--but how many of us have been to the Fastest Finger and never been seated. I'm really hoping the 3rd time will be the charm for me.
Good Luck.
Bill
-
WHich would be their correct answer? I assume the answer with Ace as 11 points, but an Ace technically is worth one or eleven.
For the Blackjack cards, the correct answer would be to assume that the Ace is indeed 1 since it has to be the player's decree to make the card 11, and it can only be done if the score is 10 or less (obviously). So, your notion of typing in ace first, Mark, would've been correct since this is the card's value if no decree is made.
Man; wish I had this question! :) Good luck to y'all tonight!
Anthony
-
Well, y'all got way farther than I did...boneheadedly, I forgot to call!
Good luck tonight, all.
-
And on day two, I misplayed on an easy question three, forgetting how often Old Faithful erupts.
-
So, after last night's debacle, I figured I'd do a practice round with fictitious information. Super-easy (or easy-to-guess) questions, aced all five. Had to hang up. (By the way, pecks are smaller than bushels, Margaret Mitchell won a pulitzer before Harper Lee, and if a > b > c > d then sqrt(a) > sqrt(b) > sqrt © > sqrt(d), in case you're asked to rank-order square roots of numbers from highest to lowest.)
So I call back and get moderately easy questions, #5 being the listing of U.S. rivers starting in the north, correct order being Yukon-Yellowstone-Arkansas-Chattahoochie. My 'old guy' rule for album titles (i.e., the one I've never heard of is most recent) served me well on question 4 (Candy-O, Nevermind, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, Room for Squares.)
Either I got really lucky, or they had like five people last night getting them all correct....
-
AHHH!! I got to question 5 tonight, which was put these Botanical Gardens in order starting with the Pacific Ocean and going east. There was Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Royal Botanical Garden, and two I've never heard of. I figured Brooklyn was first, and Royal was second, but I must have switched the last two around. Dang it, I probably won't make it past question 1 again.
-
3-4-1-2 is the correct order.
-
Geez Louise, this phone game is tough! Knocked out on question two:
Put the following books in chronological order, starting with the earliest:
1. Tale of Two Cities
2. Mother Goose Tales
3. Canterbury Tales
4. Tales from something (I misremember, mainly because I've never heard of it before, and no, it wasn't Tales from the Crypt)
I went with 3-1-2-4, having no idea when the original Mother Goose came about. I'm anxious to see what calibre the questions on the show will be, and if any contestants will actually get to test drive the new lifelines.
-
Foiled again!
Put these dogs in order by average height, starting with the shortest.
1) Mastiff
2) Beagle
3) Chihuahua
4) Old English Sheepdog
Boneheaded me tried to think ahead. Put #4 at the end. Instead, should have had it before the Mastiff.
Correct answer: 3-2-4-1
Try again tomorrow.
-
I again blew it on the 3rd question...
Put these musical groups in order by the # of members, starting w/the most:
1. The Carpenters
2. U2
3. NSync
4. Destiny's Child
I screwed up the first 2 answers, keying in 2-3-4-1 instead of the correct 3-2-4-1, so I'm history for tonight. :-(

Knocked out on question 4 again today. But before that, I got the much-debated blackjack question. Here's the wording I got, which actually seems to resolve any ambiguity:
Question 3: Arrange these cards in order of their maximum possible value in the game of blackjack, starting with the highest.
1. ace
2. nine
3. two
4. jack
But my fourth question has a choice I can't find anywhere I look. Maybe I misunderstood the question ... any ideas?
Question 4: Arrange these TV characters in the order of when they made their debut, starting with the earliest.
1. Brandon Walsh
2. Felicity Porter
3. Rory Gilmore
4. Tootsie Ramsey (???)
4-1-3-2. *bzzzt!*
What's a Tootsie Ramsey? Anyone? Bueller?
-
I'm guessing it was Tootie Ramsey from The Facts of Life. You mixed up the last two, it should be 4-1-2-3. Felicity debuted two years before Gilmore Girls.
-

Maybe it's Tootie from The Facts of Life. *shrug*
I got the single hardest first question in the history of civilization today. OK, it wasn't that hard but I thought it was tricky for a first question and not as easy as putting the 4 words of a song's title in order.
Place the following inventions in order of creation, starting with the earliest.
1. CD Player
2. Circular Saw
3. Pneumatic Tire
4. Potter's Wheel
I went 4-3-2-1. Nope. 4-2-3-1. The circular saw was created in 1780 while the pneumatic tire was invented in 1845.
The people who make it on the show will earn it this go-round.
-

Yeah, Tootie was Kim Fields' character on Facts of Life. If you want to get technical, she made her debut on Diff'rent Strokes, which of course spawned Facts.

D'oh. Thanks! Yeah, I realized I had other problems with that one. Not having a clue who Tootie was, I guessed it was something from the olden olden days. Nope -- but, imagine that, I did have it in the correct position. The correct shows and years:
1. Beverly Hills 90210 (1990)
2. Felicity (1998)
3. The Gilmore Girls (2000)
4. The Facts of Life (1979)
-
Wiped out on number 4 again
Put the following organs of the human body in order by weight, starting with the heaviest -
1 Liver
2 Skin
3 Spleen
4 Kidney - I'm not sure if he said kidney or kidneys
I went with 2-1-3-4. After trying to look it up, I found (by combining 2 different sources), that it was probably 2-1-4-3. It could have been a hint that it was probably the same order whether it was 1 kidney or 2 - If I had thought that way, it would have leaned me toward making the spleen the lightest.
-
Well, at least the second go-round, I made it past the first question!
However, I fell victim to the infamous fallacy of TTFS (Thinking Too Fast Syndrome); i.e., I knew the answer to Question #2, but I punched in the wrong buttons!
The question was:
Put these cable stations in order from launch date, starting with the earliest:
1. Food Network
2. E!
3. HBO
4. Weather Channel
Showing I have way too much time on my hands, I knew the answer was 3-4-2-1. Getting too excited, though, I pressed 4-3-2-1! BZZZZ! Perhaps I'm destined to just get one more right every night (if that is the case, then I guess I'll be qualifying on Saturday!).
Here's to actually GETTING 2 for my third time! :)
Anthony
-
I was knocked out on question 4 tonight as well...
Put the following European cities in order of their distance from Berlin, Germany, from closest to farthest away:
1. Warsaw, Poland
2. St. Petersburg, Russia
3. Paris, France
4. Rome, Italy
For some reason, I thought St. Petersburg was a lot closer than it really is, and entered 1-2-3-4. From a quick look at a map, it looks like the order should be 1-3-4-2.
-
For some reason, I thought St. Petersburg was a lot closer than it really is, and entered 1-2-3-4.
If I remember correctly from the earlier phone games, the choices were "always" presented so that 1-2-3-4 (or even 4-3-2-1? -- my memory is foggy on this point) was never the correct answer.
That tidbit was useful in cases where I might otherwise think something was correct.
-
I lost my phone game virginity! =D I didn't turn 18 until after the phone game stopped before, so this was pretty exciting for me.
I bombed on Q2:
Put these Best New Artist Grammy winners in order, starting with the earliest:
1) Shelby Lynn
2) Lauryn Hill
3) Hootie & the Blowfish
4) Mariah Carey
I panicked and hit 3412 and got buzzed. On second thought, I think it may be 1342. Do the 10 seconds seem like forever, or does it feel like you have to answer immediately? I could barely write down choices at the rate the guy was speaking!

Got knocked out on Q2 tonight:
Starting with the earliest, place these fictional detectives in the order they first appeared in print:
1. Sam Spade
2. Insp. Chauver
3. Sherlock Holmes
4. Kinizie something....
I tried "3412" and was wrong.
No clue.

Even worse than yesterday...out on question 2
Today I got a friggin health question LOL
Place in order from head to toe:
1) thyroid
2) ovary
3) pancreas
4) pituitary
If only I'd gone to med school.
-
Hey all:
Jeez, compared to what my partner got last night, I got relatively easy questions today, and got them all. (And if *I* am saying they're easy, then they're EASY). LOL. Hardest one that I almost screwed up was they give you something like:
14 pennis and 4 nickels; 1 quarter and 2 pennies, 3 dimes and one nickel, and 1 quarter and one nickel. Put them in order starting with the least amount. Doesn't look hard, but when you're trying to add and listen to what the guy is saying next AND trying to get them all in, in 10 secs...*whew*. I thought I took too much time..BTW, my examples aren't exactly what he said, but something like it.
I picked the 23rd tape date...my partner picked 21, so I wanted to be far enough away from him so if he got carried over I could be his PAF. Hopefully, if either of us get called, HE will, since he's brilliant, and I only know sports, politics, and Oscar trivia. LOL. Good luck to all. (and remember, I bombed on the 1st damn question last night, so it can be done!).

Well, I guess it's safe to say you won't see me on THAT show anytime soon. No wonder there's $10 million up for grabs here. If the phone game really is THAT hard, imagine what the difficulty level will be on the show itself. Oh well, Round 3 tonight Invisioners!
I'll probably get flamed for even posting this topic in the first place because I have no clue what makes a "good" topic. Yikes!
-
Once again, I tanked on Question 2. You had to put the following in birthdate order: Jon Stewart, Jimmy Stewart, Patrick Stewart, and Rod Stewart. I think I got Patrick and Rod mixed up. Patrick is in his 60's and Rod is just shy of 60, which I had totally forgotten about when I played the game.
I'm glad to see that everyone else is struggling with these questions. I guess I'll probably wind up reapplying for Meredith's show, since they never called me since I passed the written test two seasons ago.

Must be Kinsey Milhone, detective in Sue Grafton's alphabet series ("A is for Alibi", etc.). Just looked up - Les Mis was 1862, first Sherlock Holmes was 1867, so presumably 2-3-1-4

That'd be Kinsey Millhone, from Sue Grafton's "alphabet" series of mysteries (A is for Alibi, B is for "Boy, is this a great gimmick or what!", C is for "Can I really keep this up all the way to Z?" etc.)
Casting no aspersions, I tanked on last night's Q2, too:
Put these books in order of their first publication, starting with the earliest:
1. Devil in a Blue Dress
2. The Satanic Verses
3. Paradise Lost
4. The Divine Comedy
Though I'd never heard of Devil, I got it in the right place; I mixed up 3 and 4. Ah, well.

BTW, do any of the previous Hot Seaters (or actually, anyone who made it to NYC) know how they handle the SS# thing. When you call the phone line, it says you have to produce proof of Social Security Number BEFORE being allowed to play the game (as oppsed to TPiR, which lets you produce it I think 30 days after..). I have my card, but my partner doesn't. He does, however, have his insurance papers which have his SS# listed, and a few various and sundry papers with it also.
Do you have to get the actual SS# card if they give him the eligibility call, or will this do for now?
-Hopeful in Raleigh, NC :)
-
I don't see the questions as being any harder as they were 32 months ago(the last time the phone game was used to find contestants for the show was June 2001). I recall hard third questions and even hard second questions being asked and/or reported about in Usenet back then. We just have to get back in to the rhythm of calling and pushing those buttons, as it's been 32 months.
-
It's good to know we're not the only ones struggling with this; last night Jimmy Kimmel tried the phone game out on his show, and also bombed on the first question. Unfortunately, I can't remember the question to save my life, IIRC, it involved putting a phrase in the correct order, he dialed 4-3-2-1, and I think you know what happened next. :-)
-
Second question. Put playing cards in order of value in blackjack, from high to low (ace was in the choices). Something anyone who's watched "Gambit" would know. I press the on-off buttons above the numbers on my cordless phone keypad instead of the numbers. I screw myself. Wonderful.
If that had been me, you can bet I'd be replacing my phone right now. :-)

If I remember correctly from the earlier phone games, the choices were "always" presented so that 1-2-3-4 (or even 4-3-2-1? -- my memory is foggy on this point) was never the correct answer.
Along the same lines, on the actual show, only one time were the Fastest Finger questions put in order so the correct answer was A-B-C-D, and that was early in the run. I think there may have been one other time where the correct answer was D-C-B-A.

*But* I redeemed myself last night by qualifying for the Wednesday tape date. The questions:
1. Famous people by year of birth, from Pontius Pilate to Mandy Moore.
2. A different group of Best New Artist Grammy winners, with Christina Aguilera being the most recent (there seems to be a pop tart theme in this bunch).
3. The magazine question.
4. Opera houses from the U.S. east (The Met, La Scala, Vienna Opera House, Sydney Opera House).
5. Branded beverages in order introduced on market--Coca-Cola, Tab, Snapple and Sanka. I seemed to remember that Sanka was introduced *before* Coke and pressed 4-1-2-3.
I'm now hoping to get the call Monday morning!

Darn these literature questions!! (And these were my bane during the first run too!!)
Bombed on the third Monday night -- with ordering four books that I only knew two of in the order of publication.
And then got the Robby Roseman Memorial Llama by getting this first question wrong ast night:
Put the following four words in order to form the title of a 1948 William Faulkner novel?
(Note: You may begin your jokes here...)
1) In
2) Intruder

4) The
I said 2-1-4-3, IIRC...
Let's just say that, with a number of more literature questions, I won't be much competition for an entry this season...
-
That blackjack question is awfully double-answerable if ace IS one of the choices.
That can either be high or low at the discretion of the player.

My luck was a little better. Got all 5 last night on my second try. The paraphrased questions and order of answers went something like this...
1) Parts of the Concorde in order from front to back of the plane...landing gear, cockpit, nose, rudder
2) Literary characters in order of their introduction starting w/ earliest....Huck Finn, Hamlet, Cujo, Holden Caufield
3) Historical events in order starting w/ the earliest...Czarism ends in Russia, UN is formed, Soviet Union dissolves, NATO is formed
4) Foods in order of their introduction starting w/ the most recent...Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Hershey's Chocolate Bars, Entenmann's Fat Free Cake, Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream
5) Figures that appear in Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" from beginning of the song to end...Davy Crockett, Elvis Presley, Disneyland, Peter Pan
I was close to being stumped on the Billy Joel question until I remembered all four were mentioned in the same line of that song..."Davy Crockett, Peter Pan, Elvis Presley, Disneyland". I saw him live in Nashville a few years ago, and he did that song with the disclaimer that he claimed no responsibility if he flubbed the words. It wasn't any easier putting those words in order on a keypad.
I chose the 25th for the tape date. Wish me luck!!

Thank you, Mr. Vegas. You and GSG2K should hit the tables.
If you'd READ the thread, you'd know that the wording of the question was such that it asked to rank based on their MAXIMUM POSSIBLE VALUES, which makes the question very straighforward.

Well, tonight I made it to Q.3.
Place these states in order of population (as of 2001), starting with the highest.
1) Montana
2) Missouri
3) Hawaii
4) Iowa
I actually looked at 2002 figures, and judging by that, I cannot believe how horribly off I was. I put 1-2-4-3, and according to '02 stats, it would be 2-4-3-1. 1) 910K 2) 5.6 mil 3) 1.2 mil 4) 2.9 mil I never would've guessed that, esp. in the case of Montana and Hawaii.
That's what I get for underestimating. :-P
-
I think I may have gotten a 1-2-3-4 (or 4-3-2-1 if I misheard) question:
"Place the following elements in order according to when they were discovered, starting with the most recent:
(The parenthetical comments are mine, I looked up the dates after the fact on a chemical wiki, so if they're wrong, feel free to let me know)
1) Einsteinium (1952)
2) Radium (1898)
3) Hydrogen (1766)
4) Silver (Unknown)
I SWEAR I got 'em in that order. I was stupid and flipped the last two, thinking silver wasn't isolated as an element until after hydrogen, and that there couldn't POSSIBLY be a 1-2-3-4 out there.
So, be warned, it looks like there might be...

I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately threw in a 1-2-3-4 question, just to throw people off...almost make folks think that 1-2-3-4 would be *way* too easy.
Kinda reminds me of a "Close to Home" comic I saw where some nerds were freaking out while taking the SAT, because every answer was "C." :-)
-
*sigh*
I guess they finally learned from their zodiac nightmare...if only I had figured it out properly...
Question #5: Put these zodiac symbols in order starting from Capricorn:
1) Ram
2) Twins
3) Fish
4) Crab
Sadly, I went 1-2-4-3....forgetting that it was starting from Capricorn...thereby putting the "fish" at the wrong end.
Ironically, I'm a Pisces...
Crud.

Made it to Question 4 tonight, bombing out on the following
Put these Fashion Designers in order oldest first (not exact wording) or so I thought I heard.
A Tommy Hillfiger 1951
B Stella McCartney 1971
C Russell Simmons 1957
D Calvin Klein 1942
I guessed
D
A
C
B
and was wrong, apparently I must have gotten the order mixed up.
I got the Blackjack question as # 3 though

Got to question 3 in my first attempt at the phone game. Blew it on this question:
Arrange the following movies in order from earlies to most recent:
A. Blues Brothers(1980)
B. Home Alone(1990)
C. Phone Booth(1998, 2002) - IMDB lists two movies called Phone Booth, but both were the most recent anyway, but I'm assuming they meant the most recent one in 2002, which I thought was good, but anyway...
D. Ferris Bueller's Day Off(1986)
-Years from IMDB.com
Now I'm definitely not a movie buff, but without looking it up(not that I would've had the time), I figured the answer should be ADBC, or 1-4-2-3, and I'm pretty sure that's what I pressed, unless I made a mistake in pressing the buttons. I'm pretty sure he said earliest to recent, but oh well, there's always tomorrow!
-
0 for 3.
Question 2#
Put these artists in order of their first Top 10 hits, starting with the earliest
1) Whitney Houston
2) Celine Dion
3) Barbara Striesand
4) Carole King
I take it Barbara had the hit first, not Carole. Eh.
Try again.
-
Nice to hear that a few of us have made it into the qualifying pool...
My downfall tonight was on question 3.... we had to put the following folks in their proper order: Cesar Chavez, Clara Barton, Jesse Jackson, and Mother Teresa.
I might have flipped Mother Teresa and Cesar Chavez.... or maybe I thought they'd said JULIO Cesar Chavez.
-
Out on the first -
make a park name
1 - National
2 - Monument
3 - Devil's
4 - Tower
and I looked down to see my finger pushing number 4 first .... Damn, I wish they had a "clear entry" key....
Aaaaargh

I missed on my 2nd one again tonight. The first was easy.
Arrange these words to form a song title
1 tonight
2 you
3 are 3-2-4-1
4 lonesome
My 2nd was:
Arrange these toys starting with the earliest (dates mine)
1 Beanie Babies ('93)
2.Barbie Doll ('59)
3.Koosh Ball ('87) 2-4-3-1
4.Lionel Train ('68)
I thought the Lionel train had been around longer than Barbie and I thought koosh balls were the most recent. I really screwed that one up!
-
As a former hotseater I'm not eligible, but it's fun-- so I'm playing the phone game anyway.
Made it to question 5 and then crashed, bungling an easy one:
Put these parts of the eye in order, starting with the innermost:
Iris
Eyelid
Retina
Lens
I said 3-1-4-2, reversing the order of the iris and the lens. D'oh!
-
Now 0 for 3 (and my wife was 1 for 1--darn it!)
2nd question--Central American History--In order from the earliest:
Mayan Civilization
Panama Canal
Zapatisa? Revolution
Columbian Independence
Try, Try, Again

Here they are:
Place these songs in chrono. order, starting with the earliest:
1. Waterfall
2. Neutron Dance
3. Complicated
4. Stop in the Name of Love.
Having never heard of the top 3; I tried "4, 2, 3, 1" and was buzzed.

If I get a call, should I accept? My partner helped me get all 5 questions right. If it weren't for him, I would have missed on the 3rd question. I'm concerned that I'll get a call, go on the show, somehow end up in the "hot seat" and make a fool of myself... or I'll be the only one out of the ten to miss the fastest finger question. I have good general knowledge, but I'm definitely not "Jeopardy" material.
Here are the last 3 questions:
Put these books in order of their first release, starting with the most recent:
1. War & Peace
2. World According to Garp
3. Catcher in the Rye
4. White Fang
Put these planets in order of their diameter, starting with the smallest:
1. Uranus
2. Jupiter

I did imply IIRC on the Faulkner question -- I did get it wrong but muddled from about three possible runs as to the correct order when I posted.
----------
As far as the attempt last night went, got three...
And then _ANOTHER_ Arts and Lit question!!!
(This one on Pulitzer Prize winning drama plays... -- forgot the four listed -- two were "The Heidi Chronicles" and "Our Town")
First one was words in order to form a law of chemistry -- of -- Mass -- Motion -- Law
Second was musical styles in order of era, earliest first -- Disco -- R&R -- Grunge -- Psychadelic
Third was historical events in order (latest first) of happening: Kent State Incident -- Reagan wins second term -- Castro takes power -- Beatles begin British Invasion in US
-
Is it just me, or does it seem like every fourth question or so is an Arts question?
Has anyone gotten a sports one, or anything else that the general public has a shot at??
It'd seem like (and this was true in the first run too!) that every 15 question stack should have three Arts questions, if these are any indication...

"People" in 1964--peaked at number 5 in the midst of Beatlemania. Only Babs didn't sing her song first on "WML?" when she was supposed to sing it on Perry Como, like Louis Armstrong.
The other 3 are rather obvious--but considering that Streisand's biggest hit singles were in the 70s, your answer's more than understandable.
-
Wow, when I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
0 for 4
Question #3
Place these movies in order by the time period in which they take place starting with the earliest.
1) Quiz Show (1950s)
2) Seabiscuit (1920s)
3) Dangerous Liasons (1760s)
4) Little Women (1860s)
Like always, I only know #1 and the rest I guessed. Horribly.
I said 4-3-1-2.
Nope, as the correct answer is 3-4-2-1.
Got TraderRob's question for #2 as well.
For reference:
Place in order from head to toe:
1) Pancreas
2) Pituitary
3) Ovary
4) Thyroid
2-4-1-3
I'd say an idea if to cull all the questions people have gotten so you can study. While I'm sure there are a hundred phone game questions, I'd imagine that you could just read up on it. Simply a suggestion.

My five questions(I'm one for four on qualifying) tonight:
1-Put the group's name Rage Against the Machine in order
2-Historical Events first to last: Great Wall Built, Renaissance, Catholic Reformation, Fall of Communism in East Germany
3-Islands of Europe largest to smallest: Great Britain, Ireland, Sicily, Crete
4-80s movies in order of releases, first to last: Risky Business, Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Less Than Zero.
5-Holidays in order of celebration in calendar year(Jan-Dec): Tet, Bastille Day, Thanksgiving, Boxing Day.
Not too bad other than 4, where the movies were only a year apart or so in release.
-
Zach--Just curious--how can you be 1 for 4 and still trying--once you qualify for a tape date, you should be locked out. (Or was tonight successfull?)
I'm 0 for 4 myself. 4th question--put the following units of volume in order from the smallest: Fifth, Pony, Jigger, Pint. I wasn't aware of a Pony (it's one ounce) and put it last instead of first.
There's always tomorrow.
-
It took 4 tries but I finally qualified. Until tonight, I got some ridiculous categories for my first question (assassination attempts, inventions by year created including the pneumatic tire and circular saw, weights of brains of certain species). My sister's 2nd question tonight was about putting milestones in cellular research in chronological order. Youch.
The 5 questions were as follows. Note that the order of the answers as I have them is not necessarily the order of the question.
1. Place this scientific principle in order: Of, Law, Multiple, Proportions.
2. Placing sitcoms' debuts in order from most recent--Roseanne, Will and Grace, Living Single, Chico and the Man
3. Placing 20th century events in order from earliest to most recent--Henry Ford creates the assembly line, Microsoft created, Sputnik launched, and the creation of the transistor.
4. Place the following dishes in order based on their country of origin, starting at the Atlantic and going east--kimchee, paella, gyro, tiramisu
5. The literature question about placing settings in geographic order starting at the Atlantic and going east, the one with A Day in the Life if Ivan Denisovich, Catcher in the Rye, Shogun, and Quo Vadis. I would've gotten it right even if I didn't see it here first. :-P
Given I get the call, this is one of the rare times when I'll enjoy getting a phone call early on Saturday morning.
Answers, for those who are wondering:
1. Law of Multiple Proportions. Duh. :-P
2. Will and Grace, Living Single, Roseanne, Chico and the Man
3. Henry Ford, transistor, Sputnik, Microsoft
4. Paella, tiramisu, gyro, kimchee
5. Quo Vadis, A Day in the Life..., Shogun, Catcher in the Rye
-
Curses!! Busted out on the second question. And I knew I blew it as soon as I punched in the incorrect answer to a question asking to place events in Chinese history in their correct order. But you can't backtrack so that ends today's try at riches. There's always tomorrow and this $222,000,000 lottery ticket.
-
Once again, I blew it. This phone game is a bitch this time around. I had to put Jim Carrey, Mariah Carey, Carrie Fisher and Carrie Nation in order. I think I got Jim and Mariah mixed up, and I knew it when I pushed the button for Jim Carrey first.
-
Here was the one, #3, that did me in:
Put these parts of a standard acoustic guitar in order, from top to bottom:
1. Neck
2. Headstock
3. Bridge
4. Sound hole
In a panic, I entered 2-1-4-3, and naturally got it wrong. :-(

It seems that we're hearing more reports of questions showing up over and over again, even among our relatively small pool of players. My sense is that the question universe is significantly smaller than before, since they figured on the limited duration of the game. This would also seem to suggest that determined players could muscle their way into the qualification pool.

Hmmm, yes and no. Back in the old phone game, I have gotten duplicate questions during the same call-in period. Since this thing is automated, it would be unrealistic for them to come up with an exclusive list for each person who called for each night. I don't know if there have been duplicates between call-in periods, but I doubt it would make much of a difference if there was.
As for determined players muscling their way in, that player would have to depend on:
1. A correct listing of each and every question as posted by people who have called in
2. Remembering all the questions that are gaps in your personal knowledge
3. Punching in the numbers correctly (oops, my finger slipped)
Even if someone went to all of that trouble, that doesn't guarantee that they will get the call to play in the top ten qualifier.
By the way, has anyone been getting busy signals when calling? I only got a busy signal once on the first night, but that may have been due to my clock being fast (7 pm for me may not match their computer's 7 pm). If they managed to improve on that aspect, kudos to ABC!
-
I now have figured out my troubles with this blasted phone game. I'll get a pop culture question, and be pretty sure about the ordering of three of them, and have not a clue where the fourth ends up. Especially four celebrities...
Put these in order by birth, starting with the most recent.
1) Bill Cosby
2) Katie Holmes
3) Rick Schroder
4) Ray Romano
For some unknown reason, I guessed Rick Schroder would be older than Ray Romano. 2431 and game over for the night. 2341 is right, according to my 5 minutes of Googling.
-
ARRRRGHHHH... so close tonight... got through the first 4 (which were relatively easy actually) and then missed the last one.
1) Sizes of olives (huh!?) small to large - large, super colossal, jumbo, small
UH... ok (4-1-3-2)
2) Musicians first released albums starting with most recent - Sly & Family Stone, Alicia Keys, N Sync, LL Cool J (2-3-4-1)
3) Barnyard animals adult size small to large - Cow, Duck, Sheep, Turkey (2-4-3-1)
4) States electoral votes starting with most - NY, KS, IL, HI (1-3-2-4)
5) US Locations in geographical order starting with southernmost - Black Hills, Mojave Desert, Mt Rainier, Colorado Plateau
I believe I answered 2-4-3-1 but I think the right answer now that I think about it is 2-4-1-3 grrrrr... so close!!

Nice to see Mike Klaus get in the Super Millionaire running. As for the rest of us, we're stairing at Round 5 tonight. Good luck.
As far as duplicate question reports go, I can neither comfirm nor deny that. I think the computer "ramdomly" generates the order & placement of the questions in the phone game.
-
I think I'm about to quit the phone game til May... It's obvious I must be a freaking moron... One question right between last night and tonight...
Here are the two I missed...
Thursday night...
Put the following artists in the order they won the Best New Artist Grammy -- earliest first.
> > Arrested Development
> > Men At Work
> > Carly Simon
> > Paula Cole
> >
> > probably flipped Cole and AD...
A friend of mine noted:
>You went Cole before AD, I take it?
... which I did.
And another Llama tonight...
Put the following sounds in order from least # of decibels to the most -- what they produce...
Typewriter
Subway
Jet plane at takeoff
Normal conversation
Put the conversation louder than the typewriter.
Not only is that an ambiguous question -- to me, a normal conversation gets quite loud...
I thought I was smart. I may seriously have to throw in the towel for the February series, because this is getting me to the point where I may have to consult a neurologist to see if the psych meds and the headbanging I've done have damaged my brain to the point that I'm no longer as smart as I think I am.
Five right in five nights? Sheez...
Has anyone on this group done WORSE????
-
I keep getting obscure artsy crap. Just so the rest of you failing out there know, you're not alone in /boggle-ing at your lack of success. Some of these questions are awfully tough. I got asked about four movies that were released within a year of each other in the 70s. That hardly seems like a legitimate test of knowledge and deduction ...
-
0 for 5. This is getting insane for me. I'm a history buff and I lose on a history question. Figures.
Question THREE again.
Put these civil war event in order they occured, starting with earliest
1) Gettysburg Address November 1863
2) Battle of Gettysburg July 1863
3) Lincoln's Inauguration March 1861
4) South Carolina secedes December 1860.
As has become the norm for me, I switch two answers up.
Correct answer- 4-3-2-1
And I say 4-3-1-2.
Honestly thought SC seceded after his inauguration but I was wrong. This is coming back in May, I've just read? I hope so even though it hasn't even aired yet. God, I hope this gets monumental rating so it is brought back for May sweeps.
And my #2 was just dumb luck. If you're asked, the order of clothing designers introduced is Gucci, Polo, Guess and Sean John. That was a pure guess on the first two.
Good luck.
-
Missed on question 3 tonight, on what was IMO an incredibly vague question about putting inventions in chronological order. Included in the list were "razor blades" and "diapers". Now, replaceable razor blades and disposable diapers would make sense, but without those modifiers, or something like them, I'm left befuddled--only certain that they don't actually want me to estimate the first time someone wrapped cloth around a baby's behind or took a sharpened piece of metal to their face.
("Their" being "someone's", not the baby's.)
-
Wahoo! I made it thorugh the 5! The questions tonight were mostly putting things in chronological order (publishing of books, settings of TV shows). My favorite question so far of all the ones that I have encountered was
"Put these products in order of what part of the body they would be applied to, starting with the head"
1. Dr Scholl's Inserts
2. Halls Cough Drops
3. Head and Shoulders
4. Alka-seltzer
I hope that if I get the call, it's not during an awkward moment in my theater class.
-
WTG, LLB! You and Mike Klauss make us proud, like ol' Jason Block did when he won $125K!
-
Well, it's been five nights now. I haven't gotten past question three on any night, and tonight was the worst, losing on question 1 on a very tough put states in geographical order question.
-
THIS......F'N.....CLOSE!!!!
I just played the phone game and got to the fifth question by answering four easy ones, but blew the fifth one when I may have been able to look it up!
My questions...
Q1. Famous phrase: Landed, Eagle, The, Has
Q2. Songs by first release (earliest): "Stop in the Name of Love," "Complicated," "Waterfalls," Neutron whatever (is given in this thread)
Q3. Cities (northern first): St. Paul, Sioux City, San Diego, Santa Fe
Q4. Numbers (highest first): sqrt(49), sqrt(25), sqrt(16), sqrt(81)
Four great easy ones. But then...
Q5. Parts of a column in order from bottom to top: Cornice, Base, Capital, Shaft
I wasn't quite sure, so I took a logical guess and got it wrong. The answer is Base, Shaft, Capital, Cornice.
After I hung up, I turned to look in the dictionary sitting right next to me where the answer is right there on page 269! I think that if I had the dictionary open while I was playing, I might have been able to flip through it, find the answer and hit the keys in time.
Has anyone tried to have reference books, maps, etc., open while doing the phone game, or is it a waste of precious time?
Dean

I went out on what I thought was a pretty hard question tonight...
"Put the following four events associated with comets in order from first to most recent...
1. Comet Hale-Bopp is at its brightest.
2. The most recent appearance of Halley's Comet.
3. Pieces of the Shoemaker-Levy comet crash into Jupiter.
4. Comet Hyukatake comes within 9 million miles of Earth."
Three of those were within three years of each other. I said 2-3-1-4, and it was actually 2-3-4-1 (1985-86, 1994, 1996, and 1997, in that order). If only they had been testing my ability to spell Hyukatake, I would have done much better.
-
Add Mike McConb to the Super Millionaire qualification list. As for the rest of us, be patient, tonight's Round 6. Good luck.
As far as the show returnning in May, I can neither confirm nor deny that. However, if it gets good ratings especially at tne 10PM EST slots, I'm sure it'll come back in May. Maybe they'll do a 15-night run then. Who knows.
-
OK - I've got a puzzle for everyone...
I got to number 4 last night, and got knocked out on the following -
Album Releases, earliest first -
1 - The Wall
2 - (mumble that sounded like "Rope") In The Wind
3 - Jagged Little Pill
4 - Slippery When Wet
I went with 2-1-4-3 : "we're sorry...."
The Wall is around 79 or 80, Jagged Little Pill was 95, Slippery When Wet was 86, so the 1-4-3 part was correct without the 2, which means whatever number 2 was has to be from after 1980. That lets out Dylan's "Blowin in the Wind" (if that was an album title). I thought originally of Kansas's Dust in the Wind from the 70's, but that wasn't an album title either. Same with Elton John's "Candle in the Wind" remake for Princess Diana - that was a single release.
Anybody gotten this one, and heard it correctly, or has another guess for an album title?
-
In response to your last question.
Ropin the Wind was an album by Garth Brooks. which was from 1991
Making the order
The Wall
Slippery When Wet
Ropin the Wind
Jagged Little Pill

2 - (mumble that sounded like "Rope") In The Wind
<snip>
Anybody gotten this one, and heard it correctly, or has another guess for an album title?
(EDIT: I take WAAAAAAYYY too much time composing these things; in the meantime, Rastaub beat me to the punch. I had the title right, guessed it was Brooks, and lined 'em up the same way he did. Oh, well...)
Esoteric Eric's stats through Phone Game Night Five:
First Q: 5 / 5
Second: 2 / 5
(including last night, when I hit "7" instead of "4." Grrr...)
Third: 1 / 2
Fourth: 0 / 1
Fifth: Never qualified
P.S.: Hey, finally got to 50 posts! It only took eight months! ((8=D))
-
Thanks guys -
That answers that question! Shows how much country I listen to ....
-
By the way - I had a question last night that was correct by answering 4-3-2-1 (had to do with ordering discoveries in genetics).
-
Well, got four tonight...
A North American explorers question got me tonight -- order of first NA expedition:
Lewis and Clark
La Salle
McKenzie
Hudson
Could only place the first and last...
Others were:
Words for a 1999 nonfiction bestseller:
The -- Happiness -- Art -- Of
Cable Networks in order of launch time:
Food Network -- Weather Channel -- HBO -- E!
US locations, east to west:
Waikiki Beach -- Malibu -- Coney Island -- Myrtle Beach
Aerosmith songs in chron order:
I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing
Love in an Elevator
Walk This Way
Livin' on the Edge
So I feel a little better about myself tonight...
-
I think that, also, the ordering of questions is a bit suspect:
I know that the fourth question I faced tonight -- the Aerosmith one -- was easier than both the questions I missed on question one earlier in the qualification series.
-
0 for 6 and this was just sheer stupidity on my part.
Slipped finger syndrome.
Put this is order to form a government wellbeing department.
1) Association
2) National
3) Health
4) Mental
Of course, I hit 2 then 3 before realizing I did it. There really should be a retry your answer option. Bugger all. Stupid me read it aloud before I entered it. Use the ten seconds to your advantage. Good luck all.
-
I think about it now and your odds are 1 in 10,000 in getting on, according to the rules. Then again, subtract all those who will not answer the phone or get disqualified and those odds improve a bit. Probably more like 1 in 7500 or something.
-
ABC estimates 4% will answer all five correctly. I call bull----. Anyone else care to speculate? My best guess is that about one in 200 attempts result in a 5-for-5. I mean, this board's members HAVE to be more adept than your average Americans, and I am feeling about a 1% success rate out of this crowd.
By the way, I feel extremely fortunate to have qualified today after a series of prior snafus!
-
I bombed on the 2nd question, about events in Hispanic history. :-(

Have been going in a pattern.
Bombed on question 1. Then on Q2. Then on Q3. Tonight I bombed on Question 4:
Place these pharmacy products in order of their introduction, starting with the earliest:
1. Alka Seltzer
2. Yore Pore Strips
3. Anacin
4. Aquafresh
I tried 1-4-3-2...wrong. I immediatly knew it had to have been 1-3-4-2.

It's only easy if you know the answer.
What if they asked you the same question, but about Led Zepplin? I wouldn't have a hope in hell.
-
WHAT?!? No qualifiers here last night?(tisk, tisk) Anyway, on the premeire night of Super Millionaire, we're almost at do or die with Round 7. Good luck.

I had one of these as well, so 4321 is fair game, moreso than 1234 from what I've seen. (Put these treaties in order, starting w/ earliest signing: NAFTA, Treaty of Versailles, Treaty of Paris, Magna Carta)
-
0 for 7. One more try tomorrow night.
Question 4:
Put these world rivers in order of length, starting with the longest.
1) Mekong 4183 KM
2) Congo 4373 KM
3) Amazon 6436 KM
4) Nile 6693 KM
I thought 4-3-2-1.
I wrote down 4-3-2-1.
I instead typed 4-3-1-2.
Bugger.
The # 3 question was on the wizard of oz. Wizard of Oz knocked me down from 8,000 points at the Disney version of this too.
Had no idea when Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion and Tinman were introduced in the story and I don't remember what I typed. All I know is that is was correct. Dorothy, then Scarecrow, then one or the other.
Got the top ten hits question with aerosmith, wilson phillips, boyz II men and culture club for #2.
Question #1 was Get Met It Pays.

I had this question a few days ago, but they weren't in that order (and I mixed up Paris and Versailles). Interesting.
-
Q4:
1. Bambi
2. Wind In The Willows
3. Charlotte's Web
4. Cat in the Hat
From most recent. I switched Hat and Web.
-
It appears the phone game has settled into a routine here. Now it's do or die time as it's Round 8 for this go-around. I predict another go-around in Nay.
-
Add another qualifier (got all 5 Saturday night while on a weekend trip)...I'm hoping to get a call of some sort in the next hour and 45 minutes...otherwise, I guess I'll be in round 8 tonight as well.
-
(sigh) Made it all the way to question four:
Place these songs in order of when they hit the Billboard Top 40, starting with the earliest:
1. Baby One More Time
2. 867-5309/Jenny
3. A Thousand Miles
4. Three Times a Lady
I knew this one...I really did. I put in 2-4-1-3, but it's 4-2-1-3. I confused "Three Times a Lady" with "Treat Her Like a Lady," a mid-80s Temptations song that did not even hit the Top 40.
D'oh! >:o

Well, I (finally) got my 5 right--if the stars align, I'll get a phone call in the AM. If so, maybe the 3rd time will be the charm?

(Fingers Crossed)
-
0 for 8. I don't feel so bad on the last one but I finally made it to question 5 at least with not even knowing one of the movies on #4.
Put these dinosaurs in order of average estimated weight, starting with the lightest.
1) Tyrannosaurus Rex 7 Tons
2) Velociraptor 0.10 Tons
3) Triceratops 6 Tons
4) Stegasaurus 2 Tons
I know it would go either 2-3-4-1 or 2-4-3-1. I chose 2-3-4-1 and was wrong. I don't feel terrible on missing it as I couldn't skip two classes tomorrow to wait for the call anyway. I skipped my English class to watch a car chase, so that idea was out.

If you get a call on your 3rd qualifying attempt, you're darn lucky. I got my first and only callback thus far on about my 40th try.
I do hope luck's on your side.
-
I do hope luck's on your side.
Thanks Mike,
Actually, IF (very, very BIG IF) I get a callback, it will be my third trip to NYC. I went in Aug 99 and Jan 00, but I'm allergic to the Hot Seat. (Curse that Fastest Finger round!)
Sorry I wasnt clear. Hope I'm not too greedy!
Now it's only what--1500 to 1 against?

You've been there twice? You're a veteran! You should have no problem getting there again. :-D
I figured the likelihood of getting a call in the first few days was between 500-to-1 against and 750-to-1 against. Now, I'm guessing between 1500-to-1 and 2000-to-1.

I'm thinking similar numbers. A few busy signals could help too. But I wonder, as much trouble as everyone here appears to be having, (and I assume/hope we are brighter than the average viewer/caller) if ABC's estimate of 6% correct response rate is a little high? Perhaps fewer folks overall are making it into the pool. (Or they could let 500K/night call in instead of 250K--we'll never know.
Of course--1500 to 1 vs. 500 to 1--either way its LONG odds--but fun to think about!!
Bill
-
I made my final qualifiying attempt tonight, and I missed the fourth question.
Congrats to all who did make it.
-
I too tanked on q4 tonight, ironically missing the Composers' Birthdates question after making it past my nemesis, Geography. I just checked the answers, and I'm pretty sure I was right--but obviously the computer knows best.
Ah, well. Congratulations to all who made it through all five. We'll be rooting for you (and rooting for the show to be successful enough to give us all another chance during May sweeps).
-
Holy WOW. This is the single most difficult question I have ever encountered:
Put the following books in order of their geographic setting, starting from the northernmost.
Say WHAT?
1. The Orchid Thief
2. The Alienist
3. A Seperate Peace
4. Tobbacco Road
Uhm... no.
-
And I also missed question 4 tonight, which involved putting four movies I had actually heard of in order by release date. Only thing I can figure out is that Fred said "most recent first" and I put the earliest one first.
All of you who managed to qualify are geniuses. Congratulations.
-
My final call tonight was as follows...
Arrange the words to form a popular ad campaign:
1. The
2. Egg
3. Edible
4. Incredible
No tricks involved, I key in 1-4-3-2, and it's onto Q2...
Arrange these cities on the Missisippi River, starting w/northernmost:
1. Memphis
2. Baton Rouge
3. St. Louis
4. St. Paul
Being something of a geo expert, I know it's 4-3-1-2, and here comes #3...
Put these artists in order by when they first had a Top 40 hit, starting w/earliest:
1. Jason Moratz(sp?)
2. Madonna
3. Mary J. Blige
4. Can't remember
Anyway, whatever the correct order was, I got it...question 4?
Put these phrases in the order they appear in the preamble to the Constitution, starting w/the first:
1. Promote the general welfare
2. Ensure domestic tranquility
3. Establish justice
4. Provide for the common defense
I was unsure on 1 and 4, but took an educated guess of 3-2-4-1, and was miraculously right...now it's onto question 5, which will determine if I'm either awaiting a qualifying call or kicking myself for not being in that position because I screwed up.
My final question? Put these Martin Scorsese films in order by release, starting w/most recent:
1. Cape Fear
2. Gangs of NY
3. The Color of Money
4. Raging Bull
I thought I had it wrapped up...and then choked when the final choice was read, unable to remember when RB was released (something a search on Yahoo might have confirmed for me, but as I said, I choke under pressure, never mind that I was right by my computer and online...LOL), and ended up keying in 2-4-3-1, depriving myself of the final chance to qualify.
As it turns out, the 2nd hit on Yahoo shows "Raging Bull (1980)"
Oh well, given how well the premiere did, maybe next series. Congrats to those who qualified, my apologies to those like me who didn't...hope next time around's better for all of us.
Chuck Donegan (The Deeply Disappointed "Chuckie Baby")
-
I think my luck went from worse to worser ( even though I realize that isn't really a word ) .... tonite really put the cap on it...
Question #1, put these words in order...something something title...about Napoleon
1. Warsaw
2. Grand
3. of
4. Duchy ( I believe it was that)
I punched in 2, 4, 3, 1...and the computer said I was wrong? Either my phone is wired very wrong (I don't think it was that), or the computer falsely called me wrong. I'm 100% sure the order was 2431, so why in the heck was I counted wrong? I had a few seconds to spare and clearly waited for the tone. That was just...very bizarre. *shrugs* Oh well, as long as I know I got it. Plus, at least I can say I got to question 5 twice...now I need someone to yell at....
-
Congrats to those who qualified the last 8 nights. Before I leave this thread, I wish Super Millionaire much sucess during its 5-night run & maybe, just maybe, it'll come back again. Till next time. Peace.

"Tobacco Road" and "The Orchid Thief" (the book Charlie Kaufman and his non-existent brother--both played by Nicolas Cage) were trying to turn into a screemplay in "Adaptation") were both set in the south, so I'm assuming the other books were set there, as well.
"Tobacco Road" and "The Orchid Thief" (the book Charlie Kaufman and his non-existent brother--both played by Nicolas Cage) were trying to turn into a screemplay in "Adaptation") were both set in the south, so I'm assuming the other books were set there, as well. This is one of those "it's only easy if you've heard of the books" answers..."A Separate Peace" is set in a New England prep school, "The Alienist" is set in New York City, "Tobacco Road" is set in Georgia, and "The Orchid Thief" is set in the Everglades. So the correct answer would have been 3-2-4-1.
Now, when I was trying to qualify, why couldn't I have gotten more questions like that and fewer questions where I had to put cities in Mexico in geographical order?

Well, I tried my best to call in last night, to redeem myself for my Q.4 mis-dial, but the phone line was busy all evening. I then remembered that this was the final night of the call-in contest.
I was honestly pissed a little, though, that I couldn't get in at all between 7pm and 1am.

I think Monday was the last night - there might have been confusion because the lines closed at 3 AM Tuesday morning.
