I am curious, since there is so much to collect beyond the actual games themselves. What are your favorite piece of memorabilia that are not a game itself?
-
Well, I have five TPIR t-shirts (two say TPIR Live on them). I also have a TPIR travel mug, which has the TPIR Carey era logo on one side, and the Plinko logo on the other. I bought all that stuff at TPIR Live in Las Vegas. When I wear one of my TPIR shirts, it's always an attention getter, haha. But probably the craziest things I have is something I got at a Wheel audition here in Phoenix two weekends ago. It's a Pat Sajak talking keychain! You hit a button and it says things like "Pick up that free spin!", and "Give that wheel a spin!"
-
I've got three jackets -- denim jackets from Wheel of Fortune and Hollywood Squares and a crew jacket ("Bill") from LMaD '90. I also have a To Tell the Truth 2000 t-shirt and a Paranoia cap.
And a ton of 8" x 10" glossies from various shows.
Now, what I'd like to get is a prop or a set piece -- not likely to happen, but ya never know...

A few square yards of orange shag carpeting and you've got most of the Match Game '7x set.

My 3 favorites...
1. A scroll from Show Me the Money. The adhesive used on the scroll doesn't adhere quite well.
2. A 35mm art card slide for Hit Man (http://\"http://www.classicgameshows.com/hitman/promo1.jpg\").
3. A very early art card for Wheel of Fortune (http://\"http://www.classicgameshows.com/wheelartcard.jpg\").

I have a Drew Dollar from my wife's appearance on the Price Is Right on earth day last week. Surprisingly, it is a very weighty coin...

I've got a replica of the WOF $1,000 space, along with a totebag, ink pen, keychain and shirt with the logo. I've got my interview card from Jeopardy! and my picture with Alex in a glass Jeopardy! frame. Also included is a large photo of all contestants from that week in a regular wooden frame where I, of course, positioned myself next to Alex. I've got no official remnants from my MDP
appearance.
I have a GSN top, ink pen, buzzer, dice and post-it-note cube and four autographed photos of 4/6 of the PlayMania hosts, along with Pat & Vanna and Betty White.
I've also got my transparent QuizBusters name "plate". ;)

I would think the paycheck would be quite the strong remnant. ;)

I can't recall if I have much that is off the beaten path. There is a deck of "Pay Cards" playing cards and a TPiR 25th Anniversary Denim jacket.

I'm sorry if sounds ridiculously obvious... but is Drew's face/profile actually on the coin?
-
Let's see...I've got:
- Various press kits
- Some GS press tapes/DVDs
- GSN merchandise from the "classic" era
- A TPiR 25th Anniv. denim jacket
- An insulated TPiR 35th Anniv. lunch bag
- A TPiR script signed by Bob Barker
- An authentic Members Only celeb jacket from Davidson HS
- An oversized "Commemorative Program" from WoF's 1988 visit to Radio City
- Crew jackets from Fantasy, LMaD, and ABC-era Password
- A deck of regular size playing cards w/the CS 2K1 logo
Of those, would prolly name the HS and TPiR jackets, along w/the WoF program as my faves.

My wife and I have Jeopardy! pens from when we tried out in Chicago...
-
TPiR Credit Card, Lingo T-Shirt, GSN hat, and assorted other trinkets they sent in a "thank you" package.
$1.98 Beauty Show tiara and sash from when it started airing on GSN. I also have (somewhere) a WWTBAM pencil and coin from when I tried out in '02.
-
I am very pleased to have in my possession a set piece from the original "Reach for the Top" CBC series, having uncovered it in a university basement 10 years ago.

Where do we start?
Souvenir-type items...
-"Wheel of Fortune" deck of cards
-"Jeopardy" Keychain
-2 "Jeopardy" hats (navy blue and khaki)
-Pretty much one of each "Price" tchatchke from the CBS Gift Shop
Props (All "Price is Right")...
-Several top-loading Showcase Podium title cards
-All 10 Showcase "ARP" envelopes and tags from Barker's last Christmas week (Season 35)
-Barker "Check Game" check (19 NOW date)
-"Credit Card" Credit Card
-All the old block font product titles and prices from "Let 'Em Roll" and "Check-Out"
-Countless "Penny Ante" price buttons, price flips, and "YES" & "NO" cards.
-A photograph of the old "Check-Out" calculator (too big to get out of studio)
...among others.
-
A blue "Wheel" tote bag, complete w/keychain of a miniwheel, T-shirt, pen, and baseball cap, all with the show's logo. Received courtesy of our morning anchor who did a piece on how the show works (he actually got a box full of bags courtesy of the show).
A red "Merv Griffin's Crosswords" duffel bag and white T-shirt w/the show's logo. This was actually given to the programming director by Program Partners, even though another station airs the show in this market.
-
-TPIR picnic basket
-3 one-bid tags
-3 Check-Out price cards
-Wheel of Fortune $1000 wedge, autographed by Pat & Vanna
-Two reference books used by the writers of the original "Hollywood Squares" (Oooooooooo...Ahhhh...)
-And back in storage somewhere in WV, the $500 card from the first season of "Win Ben Stein's Money."
-
Let's see...a Bill Cullen lunchbox....no wait, I'm confusing me with Bob Goen. :)
I have an art card for "Mindreaders," a presskit from WOF from the early 90's, both of which I got from ebay and the one thing I got myself was a personally autographed pic of Ray Combs when he was appearing at a department store in Toledo.
I also have a bunch of old TV Guides, so if any contained an ad for a game show circa 1965 and beyond, I probably have it.
-
I don't know how I forgot about this, and this might be the most interesting item in my collection...
Two showcase price cards and sleeves from season 35 (http://\"http://www.classicgameshows.com/other/tpirshowcases.jpg\"). These were not made in Chris Clementson's basement with supplies from Staples. They are the real deal, having come from someone who worked on the show.

Initials CCN, as you used the past tense.
I don't have a basement. We have a rec room in our building as some members will attest.
From the information on those cards, did the first contestant bid or pass on their showcase?

The top winner bid on SC1.

One thing I have from actual show use is a prize envelope from Wheel it says RIVIERA (From the W-H-E-E-L version bonus round). Signed by Pat and Vanna. I'm saying it may be from 1993-ish or so. I'm not sure.
I also have a Wheel clock and some assorted GS shirts including a Whammy! one. I also have autographed pics on my wall in my office (Pat/Vanna, Barker, Trebek). I'm sure I have some more stuff stashed somewhere that I am forgetting.

My collection is kind of small.
A Wheel of Fortune baseball cap
Autographed picture of The Unknown Comic from a GSN promotion (it's buried in a box somewhere)
A small collection of game show tickets: 2 from WOF in the Chuck/Susan era, a Press Your Luck ticket from 85, and a Price ticket from 77 or so.
And of course name tags, tickets, etc from the time I and a couple friends were in the Price audience.

No fair looking up the recap. I said from the information on the cards (or more precisely, in the picture). Now explain to the class how you could tell that without looking up the recap.

The word "down" on SCII's envelope means that the person downstage is bidding on that showcase? It's a guess since I didn't take theater in school.

Will you accept "Who the hell would pass on a $31,000 showcase with a boat?"? :)
-
"Downstage" means toward the audience. SC #1 was shown and offered to the upstage contestant (the one they go to first, the one closer to the emcee). The upstage contestant decided to bid, leaving SC #2 for the downstage contestant (closer to the audience); thus, SC #2 is marked "down".
Here is a video with circular definitions of "upstage" and "downstage":
http://www.videojug.com/expertanswer/theat...e-and-downstage (http://\"http://www.videojug.com/expertanswer/theatre-lingo-2/what-is-upstage-and-downstage\")
Rich Fields will now explain to you many other nuances of the production of the show.
-
The true bonus will be awarded when Chris can tell us what it means then when Kathy would say "Down and out" when the cards were presented to Bob.
-
In the context of the showcases? That cannot be deduced with logic, so I'll guess double overbid.
Now what's the true bonus?

It's all most easily remembered by understanding the derivation of the terms.
In ancient times (centuries before TV City was built and decades before Barker was born) when plays were presented outdoors without complex bleachers or raked seating, the only way everyone in the audience could see all of the action was to build the raised stage sloping towards the audience. Actors furthest from the audience were up higher on the incline than the performers closer to the audience. So when an actor walked "upstage", he walked uphill, up the inclined stage (without turning his back to the audience - tricky). An actor walking "downstage" moved downhill, down the ramped stage towards the audience. Furniture and set pieces occasionally needed to be attached to the stage to keep from sliding downstage towards the audience.
Production of "Starlight Express" would have been very difficult ;-)
Next lesson: Early TV, when the cameras were powered by coal. ;-P

I understand that when Barker started in radio, they had trouble doing shows because they hadn't yet invented time.
Those coal-powered TV cameras didn't make very good pictures. They could only do black-and-black.
ObGameShows: TPIR still uses inclined ramps to display prizes.
Now I must explain this to our newcomer, pentellit. See, whenever we have a post which contains no game show references, it is customary (but strictly optional) to include an Obligatory Game Show reference which starts out with "ObGameShows". It's just a silly thing which has evolved over the years. Pentellit, do you know anyone who can vouch for TPIR prize displays being ramped and how difficult it is to walk upstage on them? :-)
-
^^^Okay, Here's what I found out; Yes the ramps on Price are elevated "upstage". They are usually covered in carpet, or in the case of kitchen appliances it's linoleum. The challenge for the models is not walking upstage, it's walking downstage, while smiling into the camera, and not tripping over the wires that bolt the prizes to the floor (so they don't slide down the ramp!)
BTW a bigger challenge for the models navigating these prize platforms is the roll-aways that are suddenly yanked offstage to reveal a bigger prize behind it. Hang on!!!
Someone also asked if my friend Linda had worked with Johnny Olson. Linda answered "no" but she wished she had because everyone reminisced so fondly about him. She was however very, very close to Rod, loved him dearly, and was with him through his final days.
I don't know if Barbara Hunter and Bob Welsh are still married.
Lastly but definitely not leastly, you guys are seriously funny! The line about coal powered cameras and time not having been invented when Barker was on radio and people in Kansas and all the rest! I am still LOL!
-
I may have mentioned this already, but my list includes:
Autographed photos of the Winkster, Jim Perry, Peter Tomarken, Bert Convy, and Jeff MacGregor.
Autographs from Michael Burger and John O'Hurley when I attended tapings of their shows.
Tickets from Press Your Luck and Card Sharks (1986-89 version)
And I don't know if this counts, but I have three of Wink's singles from when he was a teen idol, and I have airchecks from Wink's "Music of Your Life" show from 2003; as well as airchecks from Peter Marshall's MOYL show.
Cordially,
Tammy

Aside from the "Play It!" stuff (previously posted), I've got two WWTBAM mugs, Phone Jeopardy! watch and frame (with an old picture of Alex Trebek) and a Russian Roulette t-shirt.

-
Other stuff I just remembered:
- Mugs from TPiR, LMaD, WL, and WWtBaM
- Limited-edition J! and WoF watches
- A TPiR pencil and pen
- A WoF ornament commemorating the show's 20th anniv.
- WoF pen I got from a cattle call in Atlantic City
- WWtBaM magnets and pencils I got from my countless auditions
- Mini-Playbills from J!'s 2002/2006 and WoF's 2003/2007 visits to Radio City
- Fan-made photo collage of Bob Barker (which includes a TPiR logo, his Walk of Fame star, and his 1984 TV Guide cover w/fellow emcees)
- A Chuck Woolery bobblehead
- An extensive collection of GS T-shirts that anyone who's attended a GSC between 02-05 has seen part of (since, for those of you unfamiliar, I wore a different one every day of each convention...LOL)
