Title: Game show curses
Post by: GS Warehouse on December 30, 2004, 11:26:45 AM
Whether Ken Jennings's run was the biggest story of 2004 overall depends on who you ask.  I highly doubt anyone from Boston would agree, though, since this was the year their beloved Red Sox exorcised the Curse of the Bambino.  OK, so this question may be two months belated, but is there such a thing as a game show curse?  I submit a couple of examples:
- ABC cancelled Break the Bank in 1977 to make room for more soap operas.  No ABC daytime game show launched since then lasted more than one year.
- When Fox cancelled Greed in 2000, they said they wanted to get away from the kind of lowbrow programming they've been identified with.  To say they went back on their word is an understatement.  When Animals Attack?  Playing it Straight?  My Big Fat Obnoxius Fiancee?  The Swan?  Enough said.  Also note that no Friday night program on Fox since then has ever matched Greed's ratings; in fact, the typical Friday night average is now about one-third of that.
- The curse of Brooke Burns?  Maybe not, but TTTT2K lasted only six more months since she became a regular, and critics had a field day with Dog Eat Dog.  Two more words for you: North Shore.
- The curse of KenJen?  J! has had only one three-time champion since Nancy Zerg did the impossible.  Then again, it's only been a month...

Oops, I thought this thread was about that guy who went bleepity-bleep-bleep-BLANK on "Friend or Foe."
Sorry.

This could also have to do with her lack of talent.

Hell, anyone can buy talent. However, if that's her God-given talent, then more power to her. In that case, you should milk your talent for all it's worth.

Which, no doubt, is how she secured the above jobs in the first place.

...and Jeopardy had a contestant named Sajak, and WOF had a contestant named Trebek...

Coincidences are what you make of them.

The current version of Family Feud having so many new champions.

Here are more blue hell curses: The shouting contestants on Wheel Of Fortune, audience members orgasming when Richard Karn doubles and triples the points on Family Feud and the guy with the eye patch hearing an answer from the audience in a Jay Jackson-hosted episode of Tic Tac Dough.
How about The Curse Of The Rolf? Did any new game last over a year on NBC after he got canned?
And then there's the Another World curse. Every time that show expanded in length, it was at the expense of a version of Jeopardy!.

Allow me to step in here Chris. He's referring to the fact that quite consistently, the order with which Karn Feud airs is "out of order", such as different returning champions on the next show...

Weakest Link, unless you meant just daytime, then no.

Classic Concentration's return five weeks after NBC axed it originally lasted two years and two months. Albeit, those two years and two months were all reruns. If you don't count that, since Win Lose or Draw, only Weakest Link has lasted more than a year when launched.

Without rehashing the eternal "is it a game show?" debate, I'd say Fear Factor deserves to be on that list.

Shame on me. I did indeed mean any game show and plum forgot about The Weakest Link. To The Blake Emmons Room I go.
But first! Another curse. The Hot Seat Curse. Never again did Heatter-Quigley get a game on ABC after its cancellation.

Damn, you really are a piece of work. Re-read Don's original post. He said did any new game last AFTER Rolf was canned. If CC was in reruns, why the HELL would it count?!

And I really don't need you to confirm what I originally posted.
