There wasn’t a specific number per se; several variables typically were in play,  For one, programmers in charge looked at share, not rating.  More often that not, each time period was judged in context.  Basically, if you won your slot and either improved or held the majority of your lead-in, you tended to fine.  In time slots where coverage diminished, there was even more of a sliding scale.  In the time slots where three networks competed with similar genres, a competitive number two could get by as well.  Woolery Wheel typically performed ljke that.  And of course packagers sometimes mattered as well.  Goodson often had leverage, particularly at CBS.

In this particular case, the decline was precipitous and the morning environment just did not work. And lacking after school kids hurt the overall HH number—don’t forget, no time shift viewing.

Those were the days

"Modern game shows" and "improvisation" are mutually exclusive.

The Big Board / New York Times "Connections" (4/27 spoiler)

Spoiler Alert for those of you who play Connections and haven't played the 4/27/2024 game yet...

One of the subjects in the New York Times "Connections" game on 4/27 was "Name Homophones", and the words were Curt, Kneel, Wane...and Hairy.

I immediately had a flashback to the Password Plus incident with Tom Kennedy and Marcia Wallace

* The Price Is Right: Every time they play Stack The Deck (Honestly, I feel whoever created that game gave it that name just to rub it in).

It is definitely a budget-saver game, and they exploit that fact, though it seems to have a disproportionately high number of contestants who play it badly as well.  The GP pricing can be tricky, but if you're fortunate to land one or two of them and you're picking either of the first two digits for your freebies, then you're asking to lose.

I also think "That's Too Much" is trotted out when they need to trim the budget.

Sticking with kid's game shows, I always felt that Legends of the Hidden Temple was mostly budget saver episodes except about every 8th or 9th episode where the temple run was way shorter than most and nearly guaranteed a win.  No Shrine of the Silver Monkey located in the primary path, no dead ends, temple guards located mostly in the corner rooms, more unlocked doors for a straight shot to the room with the treasure.

I found a site that has scans of Nielsen Pocketpieces from 1978-June of 1988:

https://www.ratingsryan.com/p/nielsen-pocketpiece-archives.html

Looking at some of these daytime numbers, I'm wondering what rating was considered good enough to get a renewal? Some shows that met early deaths looked like they got higher numbers or comparable to shows that lasted several years, or, like Hollywood Squares, kept hanging on.

Maybe they will cut Ru some slack and allow him to improvise a little this season.
