Title: GSN & Digital/Basic Cable
Post by: Jumpondees on December 01, 2003, 08:33:53 PM
I just read something in my mailbox today....snail mail that is...

Comcast here in Pittsburgh is moving GSN off the Digital Cable and on to the Basic Cable service.  GSN is currently on channel 161 and come Wednesday it will move to channel 52.

Obviously, this would be a great move ... People who don't normally get Digital will be able to watch GSN, and thus possibly increas viewership....I realize it won't be much, but still it's an increase....

Now my question is this...How many people get GSN on Basic as opposed to Digital?

From what I've read over the past few years between here and over ATGS, it seems that a lot of cable ops put GSN on thier Digital service ... it just kinda seems odd that all of a sudden, the channel gets moved from Digital to Basic.

All 3 and a quarter years I've had GSN, it's been on basic for me.

Hehehe, maybe I convinced enough people with the commercial I shot for them in April: (Shot of me holding enormous check) "Hey Pittsburgh, I am so glad Comcast came to town, because they brought Game Show Network and the Get Schooled Tour, where I just won $10,000 for college! Thank you Comcast!" :-p

On another note, to my knowledge, GSN is on digital channel 161 in Oil City, PA, and analog 74 in San Luis Obispo, CA.

I've had GSN 4 years today.  For the first three years, GSN was on the basic tier--channel 76, then 50.  Since about this time last year, it's been on digital channel 144.

I did have GSN on basic cable through Charter Communications on Channel 65.  Then when I moved 2 years ago, I moved into an area that carried Time Warner (now Bright House Networks) and GSN was only on their Digital Tier at channel 104.

In seattle, GSN is on Comcast Digital Cable channel 161.

I have a silly suspicion. My household bought digital cable for 3 channels: My mom wanted Home and Garden Television, My dad wanted the Golf Channel, and I wanted GSN. Over the summer, both HGTV and Golf Channel moved to basic cable. I'm predicting/hoping GSN will be next.

Time Warner of Akron/Canton used to have GSn on channel 105, but about 1 1/2 months ago, it moved to channel 67.

Hmm...it seems that Comcast has the same channel numbers for all digital cable lineups, since it's also Channel 161 here in Portland, Oregon as well.

Wow!  My father had said something about reading GSN would be coming to basic cable but lost the article (however it was the Beaver County Times so its probably better that way).  I tried looking that up online but to no avail.  I have digital cable in my room just for GSN and its gonna save a lot of money to get rid of digital.  I originally signed up for a bigger cable package to get NickGAS and HBO but I don't even watch them anymore.

Woohoo!!!

I have had GSN here in the Scranton-Wilkes Barre PA area since December 1998. It has been on basic cable (Adelphia) on channel 49. It was channel 107 on digital for a few months, but it seems to have been removed recently.

I've had GSN for about two and a half years now, and it's been through Cox Digital Cable the entire time.  When I first got it in June 2001 it was on digital channel 343, then it moved to 243 a couple of months later and has been there ever since.

I don't get GSN, since it is offered on COX digital cable (222) and we can't afford that right now. It has been coming on channel 77 every once and a while for a week at a time, since 2001.

GSN came to Channel 89 of the basic lineup of WOW! Internet & Cable in Chicagoland on September 10, 2002.

The majority of Chicagoland has Comcast and it, too, is Channel 161.  Formerly AT&T, they've had GSN on digital cable since, I believe, 1999.

June 1998, actually.

And on all former AT&T systems and on systems that use Headend in the Sky for digital, GSN is on 161 digital.  The Comcast systems that have always been Comcast (in terms of digital tier) use another system, is as obvious from the commercials for digital where the interactive screens don't look anything like the HITS/TV Guide interactive screens.

We've got GSN on basic on Comcast in Cambridge, MD.  At least we did when I still lived in Cambridge.  I'm now in Secretary, MD... local cable provider Bay Country Communications doesn't offer digital service, so it's on basic channel 71.

Interesting! I always wondered why that was, exactly. (I had an IDEA, such as getting that block of compressed channels from the same provider, etc., but I didn't know for sure.)

Thanks for that!

Didn't we just have a thread like this? :)

Anyway, Comcast Harrisburg carries GSN on cable channel 73. They don't have a digital equivalent.

Well the Pittsburgh to non-digital for GSN is the different part.  I didn't know what channel it was going to be so it was news to me.

I believe the first two major cable operators to agree to carry GSN on all of their systems were Marcus Cable, which put it on analog, and TCI, which put it on digital.  Neither company is still in existence, but I don't know if that's entirely GSN's fault.

(TCI became AT&T and then Comcast, of course, and the former Marcus systems are now various other companies, including Charter in southern California and Insight Communications in Indiana.)

Well...when we had Comcast, it was on the basic tier on channel 75, then 71, and that was over 5 years ago, now! (Wow, it only seemed like yesterday when I finally woke up one morning to the clapping of Card Sharks...ahh...the memories...)

*shakes head* Oh....anyway....

I received GSN on basic until Winter, 2001. That was when Adelphia took control of much of this region, and GSN was not only off the regular tier, it was off entirely for a while! I had it at my dorms in Spring, 2002, when GSN was added to the basic tier for Charter Communications. Some time late last year, GSN was back on the digital tier in Ontario; I finally got digital cable this summer, when the PYL Vertivision blocks begun, incidentally. So I've had it off and on the past couple years. Not too bad. =)

GSN was dropped on 161 here and moved to 66 (where I think it's always been on analog.)  The good news is the new station doesn't have to split with the PPV anymore.

It's actually also in channel 67 here in NJ, where we have Cablevision.  It's been on basic cable for about 6 months or so here.

I'm adding my 2¢...

In Milwaukee, it is on digital cable channel 160 (well, the last time I had it, anyways).  However, when we went to pick up our new car in West Bend, it was on the basic tier.

Did somebody say "irony"?

When I first got GSN back in 2000, it was on Time Warner Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville digital channel 161.

Three years later.... It's still there.

- Comcast carries GSN on basic in New Haven.  Interesting, though, Comcast doesn't have Music Choice as part of its digital service.
- Cox puts it on digital in Hartford.
-Time Warner in Columbus, Ohio introduced it on digital way back when digital came on the scene.

I've had GSN since September 5, 2001 (even though I have tapes from GSN around 2000 or so because my dad's work had a satellite dish), and it's been on channel 161 since I got it (well over two years.)

It would be interesting for it to do a basic cable change... gets more viewers plus it cheaper for some (including me and my family's current financial situation)

I was just wondering, does anyone who has Cox have GSN on basic cable?
