From TV Guide:
"But I do know I am ashamed of the show and surprised at their complete disregard for the welfare of animals. Were I still there, a prize to attend the Calgary Stampede would never have been considered. We never did anything that condoned animal cruelty. Apparently, things have changed."
"Apparently, things have changed."
I'm sure the models would agree.
-
Thanks to Curt and Chris; I needed a laugh, and I got two of 'em.
-
Was Barker talking to a chair when he said that?
-
Of course Daddy wasn't asked. He might've said "yes". I sure wish Betty White had been on, though. That'd be a nice chop in his sack.
Besides, he might have found out the big event wasn't 100% about him, waited for an exit line cue and left at mid-show.
-
"But it's MY SHOW, DAMMIT!!!!!"
-
That'd be a nice chop in his sack.
There's a good Chuck Norris joke somewhere in there.
There are a hundred justified reasons for not giving Barker a call about being part of the show, but considering that anniversary shows only come once every five years, I would have given him a spot to host a classic pricing game or take part in one of the showcases. He doesn't have too many more years left where he could be trotted out with some dignity (and some would contest that), but if he's looking for a spot on an anniversary show, I'd make some room for him. Couldn't hurt the ratings to promo the show as having a Bob appearance, either.
-

When he's publicly bagging on the show, why should they extend that courtesy?
If you were to leave your position at your current employer, you wouldn't get to dictate what they do down the road, right?
-
When he's publicly bagging on the show, why should they extend that courtesy?
This. Don't shiat where you ate.
-
I would have told George Gray not to refer to the Bob Barker Studio; just call it Television City.
-

Ate? He still gets residuals from the show as long as he doesn't talk crap about it. I bet the resulting backpedalling is a result of the money no longer making it to Casa De WGMC.
-
He still gets residuals from the show as long as he doesn't talk crap about it.
Well, since it's contractual, I'm guessing he gets them even if he does talk crap about it.

Imo, a slap in Bob's face is when furs get to be prizes again. Until then, I'll just have a a hot dog, with all the fixins looking over the Marineland pool in my amazing crocodile shoes :) Sure hot dogs don't come from animals, right? ;) Go Willy go!
-
Maybe it's just me, but the phrase "Karma's a Bitch" is coming to mind.

I don't see that happening anytime soon (the fur coats). Not so much to do with Barker (or maybe so), but they have become taboo over the years...

Well, taboo is really a period of non-acceptance. It's far fetched but let's see if TPIR pushes the envelope further (or where furs become acceptable again which could happen but it would be a long, long time). When it comes to animal rights, Barker can be an extremist at times. I'm sure TPIR didn't do any of this to Bob on purpose originally (now they could care less what he says). If the prize was a trip up north for the annual seal hunt, then he has a real case to be pissed. Until then Bob, go to a petting zoo and give the animals some love.
Remember kids, if the animals aren't ready for the wild, they'd be some other animal's meal by now anyway :)
-

Please elaborate.

I wouldn't mind having it called The Carol Burnett Studio.
-

Well, if you ever heard the phrase "let's go clubbin'", while the phrase has been used humorously, it's not that funny when it comes to seal hunts. Seal hunts look gruesome and inhumane to most who has ever looked at them either live or via footage. A gun to the head of a seal would be a better option but still very shocking to watch. Seal meat is illegal in many parts of the world... Canada is one exception. Bob Barker would have a spasm if he ever seen this kind of stuff but many native people up north don't think of it as inhumane but rather as being part of the food chain... a part of the life cycle. Nobody would want to kill an animal for the sake of suffering and getting cheap thrills from it.
As far as TPIR using the seal hunt as an actual trip or prize, it would never happen but rather an example of an extreme way to piss or gross Bob Barker out.
-

Suppose they'd done something like that. Suppose, say, they had him come on and host, say, Any Number one more time. If he looks sickly or has trouble doing his old job even for a couple of minutes, that looks really bad. If he does *well,* then countless idiots who believe if you can do something for a minute then you can do it all the time will think that means he shouldn't have retired at all and go clamoring for the show to bring him back. Either way, nobody wins. (Except, maybe, whoever was playing Any Number.)
-
For those sad Bob didn't appear, lemme help you imagine what it'd be like to be there...
"Look at all that black hair...aged in your service." <CUE CANNED LAUGHTER>
"Can't resist picking me up..." <ROLL TAPE>
"She come on down and they came on out." <ROLL TAPE>
"My most embarrassing moment..." <ROLL TAPE>
"Cut your dog's nuts off...goodbye errbody." <CREDITS>
If I we're Mike Richards, I'd have played Double Prices for a puppy wearing a baby seal fur coat while riding a horse wearing leather shoes. And I would've made the wrong price option $FCKU dollars.
-
I would have told George Gray not to refer to the Bob Barker Studio; just call it Television City.
I wouldn't mind having it called The Carol Burnett Studio.
If this were Facebook, you'd get a like.

Obviously Barker has a right to express his opinions like everyone else, but I think someone needs to tell him "it's not ALL ABOUT YOU." I noticed when he did Tattletales with his late wife Dorothy Jo, she never called him Bob. She referred to him as "Barker." There was a reason for that I'm sure (his ego).
-

"Look, the show is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and I did 35 years of those 40 years. Do you think there might be somebody out there in TV land who’d have liked to have seen me on the show?” Barker said, according to the story.

But there are also viewers would might have liked to see certain models invited to the 25th, 30th and/or 35th anniversary parties. To quote the cool kids, "Just sayin'."

When 88 years old you reach, listen to crap like that you will not.

I have two friends who are married to each other, could not be less egotistical, and refer to each other by their last names all the time.
With all of the thoroughly documented instances of Barker asshattery, we don't need to go making more up out of specious evidence.

Holly said in some interview that everyone on the staff called Bob "Barker" and not Bob... she said his FANS call him Bob, everyone else calls him "Barker", so interpret that any way you want. It could be that perhaps "Barker" is more authoritive sounding than Bob, so with Bob's ego, perhaps it's the equivalent of being called "your majesty" or something like that. Also, in Bob's book, he said he was called "Billy" growing up, so maybe he doesn't like being called "Bob" off camera (except by his fans).
-
Bill Cullen, Dick Clark and Peter Tomarken have never claimed to be icons, which means they're personal candidates to be just thst. let's leave all this I make more money than you bs at the door and analyze who the real icon of game shows is
and on a personal note to Bob Barker, you are a household word, but so is garbage and it stinks when it gets old too. I'm Johnny Orgovan, and that's my opinion...

Again, that does not necessarily have to do with his ego. He was already familiar with his wife calling him "Barker", so it could've just as well been a nickname for people he's comfortable or familiar with. My old coworkers called each other by last name at times too, usually on-air talent.

The source from the TV Week piece had the perfect unassailable reason--the show was about 40 years of contestants. The trouble was that Drew didn't make that point clear on the broadcast.
I'd have loved to see Janice bring the mike out, though.
-
...and it's worth precisely what we paid for it.
Dunno about you but I'm expecting a rebate in the mail after reading the nonsense of this guy and James Fabiano.
-

Provided camera 1 doesn't knock her off the stage again.
-
Holly said in some interview that everyone on the staff called Bob "Barker" and not Bob... she said his FANS call him Bob, everyone else calls him "Barker"
Around the office, outside his presence, he was known as "Barker".
In the two years I was there, never once did I see Barker set foot in 6430 Sunset, even when we had a TPIR game meeting in January, 1980 at which Messrs. Goodson and Wayne (père and fils -- and I do mean fils literally) were present. The only time I ever saw him at 6430 Sunset was when he came to the CNN bureau to be interviewed about animal rights.
According to an undisclosed and unimpeachable source, I can truthfully say that Barker isn't getting any younger. At all. I think that's why he's OK with not being on this show.
-
...and it's worth precisely what we paid for it.

Let me clarify why i went there. A lot of wrestling fans know that Shawn Michaels was the most TALENTED man in the WWF around 95-98, but backstage he was an adolescent JERK, and he called himself an "icon". Barker was UNBELIEVABLE when it came to hosting...but behind the scenes, he was a jerk.(Janice, Holly, anyone?) To be an icon, you have to be great in the show itself AND a gentleman off of it. Legend, yes. Greatest of all time? NO..that goes to Bill Culen in my book.

Dunno about you but I'm expecting a rebate in the mail after reading the nonsense of this guy and James Fabiano.
Whaaaaaaa? I just made one comment in this thread, and it was a reference to the person Cyclone was paraphrasing. (You have to be a wrestling fan to get it, I suppose) If I did say something that rubbed you the wrong way, and wasn't thinking about it or remembered it, then I apologize.

Bob having feedback on TPIR now is like Johnny Carson having feedback on The Tonight Show after he left. I don't know if Johnny was ever invited on Jay Leno's show as a regular guest, or even on specials. Once he was gone he was gone. He showed up on Letterman's once in awhile and I think Letterman did a better tribute to Carson than The Tonight Show did.
It's like Chuck Woolery complaining about WOF now and wondering why the producers dont listen to him, or why he's never invited back for specials or shown in clips. Mind you WOF almost go out of their way to deny the show ever existed before 1983.
Like it or not, once a host leaves a show, thats it. If it continues on congratulations to the show. I myself havent watched TPIR regularly for years. Once the audiences got way too annoying to watch I gave up. And these "oh I've watched all my life but never seen Clock Game" contestants... grrrr. TPIR is not your grandmother's TPIR and not even the one I grew up with. I wish CBS had gone a bit more classy with TPIR rather than a McDonalds Playland feel to it, but I guess they know best. They will get the modern viewers. The way I looked at it is that they could have stuck any host on the show and get just a good a rating. The contestants don't care who's hosting it. Just there to see whats behind the big doors. The viewers like me will keep watching the old shows on youtube.
All in all it would have been a nice gesture, and if they were going to do it, it would have been the best time to invite him back. They went out of their way to have clips and have the original contestants, but what ya gonna do.
Just wondering, what is stopping TPIR now from rerunning shows with furs now? Since they're doing other things that Bob doesn't like. Also is TPIR allowing the older shows to air on GSN, or did they just ask too much for GSN to bother with.

Jesus, I couldn't tell you the last time GSN aired TPiR. I'd be willing to entertain that it's been at least ten years.

Drew Carey has now weighed in on the controversy, telling TMZ that it wasn't personal, "it just didn't occur to anybody to invite him (http://"http://www.tmz.com/2012/09/07/drew-carey-bob-barker-price-is-right/")." Whatever you think of Drew, Bob, Roger, Richards, Holly, Janice, Dian, or that other guy named Adam Sandler, I have a very hard time believing that in meetings about a 40th anniversary special, Bob's name just didn't happen to come up.
-

I don't know. Newhart and Rickles on the same show was pretty awesome.

Bob still has power over his image. If he doesn't want his shows with furs airing, he won't clear those appearances. Whether he still has control over Dennis' episodes (I'd think not), is up for question.

Drew sucks at damage control, too. (http://"http://www.tvguide.com/news/drew-carey-bob-barker-price-is-right-40th-anniversary-snub-1052759.aspx")

As was pointed out just an hour ago by Matt.
Would it have been nice for him to show up? Sure. But did it matter? Not really. I'm in the camp that, hey, this is how he treated people in the past and didn't bat an eyelash doing so, so I don't mind if he can feel what it's like to be on the outside looking in.
-
This may not have added to it, but was Barker a handful the last time he came back to peddle his book?
-

It very easily could have been a factor. I absolutely could get behind a scenario where the conversation was something like "What can we do for a 40th anniversary that recognizes the longevity of the show without having to put Barker in the middle of it AND gives us some cover from the impression we're ignoring him? Focus on the contestants? Great, let's do it!" The idea that Barker's name never came up? No way.

CBS went as far as to release the clip of TPIR #1 with its first item up for bids to various news packages. THAT I can imagine didn't set well.

It should also be noted that when TPIR itself played the clip, it ended (awkwardly) immediately after Bob asked for the first IUFB.

On the TMZ television show yesterday, they played their clip of Drew Carey saying that nobody thought to include Barker, and called it one of the biggest lies in the history of lies, even going so far as comparing it to "I never had sex with that woman".
It was also the subject of Craig Ferguson's monologue last night:

Exactly. (And I knew you got your original spiel from Jim Cornette's old WWF commentaries, hence me referring to his Botchamania meme. Would that others "got" the reference, huh?) I'd even throw in a bit of Bruno Sammartino in there, with him acting like a bitter old man who can't accept change. You gotta think his assessment of the show now had to be part of the reason he wasn't invited. As if he didn't want to be there anyway, so why bother? Yet it was all good when he had a book to plug, right?
I admit he was a great on-screen performer and that I don't fault him for believing in animals' rights. And I don't think he SHOULDN'T have been there by any means. But sometimes he takes things a bit too far. Just because you made a guest appearance on TPIR doesn't mean you agree with the Canadian Stampede's practices. And yeah, there's the talk about his off-screen antics. I'll see your Janice and Holly and raise you Dian, Rod, Tom, Dennis, Doug, and Betty. He's a legend, but not as perfect as some hero worshippers paint him out to be. (Go back to Cyclone's HBK example, and this is more extreme, but I also can't help but think of how Chris Benoit still has his followers in the IWC...not that I compare Bob Barker's Backstage Satan act to murdering your family and taking the easy way out)
One thing I have seen hardly mentioned is that at least Bob was seen in the classic clips. Had they wanted to totally erase him from history, I'm sure they could have edited him out somehow. (Kind of like how many of the people Cyclone and I mentioned were excluded from previous anniversary shows, and almost totally skipped over in the DVD set. And hey, wasn't there an instance where they showed a classic clip somewhere and they had whoever the Beauty was blurred out?)

Who's faulting him for that? Let him do whatever he wants with his time, he's certainly earned it. Just don't come to me with a petition to let male chickens vote, 'cuz I'll have no truck with it. Yes, I guess that makes me a rooster blocker.

I still don't know what it is. I see two guys spazzing out and carrying on and generally behaving like the kind of people I mocked back in school: "Whew, I may be a geek but at least I'm not totally off the rails about it."
Just talk to us and leave the metaphors for another place.
