Title: Barker Re-Ups
Post by: davemackey on February 21, 2006, 03:14:01 PM
As reported by golden-road.net and confirmed by its webmaster, Bob Barker has begun telling his audiences that he's signed for another five years doing "The Price is Right" - which will keep him working through the show's 39th year AND his 87th!

Wow. I wasn't expecting that.

God, I hope something doesn't happen at a taping. Some of those contestants manhandle him so much.

Can we keep it real here folks?  Barker will not last 5 more years.  No way.  This season he's been slipping a lot more this year than he has in...let's see what's a fair time to gauge...the last decade.  He'll always be the W.G.M.C., but I don't see him being around as host for 5 more years.

You have got to be kidding me. As much as I like Barker, and as much as he still has some gas left, five more years seems a bit too impossible for his limits. I could see him do at most 2 more years, but for him to go five?!

I wish him nothing but the best of luck, and hopefully something doesn't happen to him somewhere along the line.

He just finished off a similar contract - it's a five year deal that is made one year at a time.

Post by: cmjb13 on February 21, 2006, 05:29:16 PM
This is no different than when he re-upped in 2001.

To reiterate, he will continue to do the show as long as he looks good and feels good. So the length of the contract doesn't mean squat.

Season 40? (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=1755&view=findpost&p=14296\")

Haven't we all been saying that for the better part of the last ten years?  Barker will call it quits when he feels it's time.  As for anyone to guess when that will be, no one really knows but him.

Which is fine and good, except with each passing year it's becoming more and more apparent that "when he feels it's time" and "when it actually WAS time" are two different things.

Fact is, he's getting very dangerously close to going out with a whimper instead of a bang with each on-air screwup, but I expect the fanbois don't care since they just see it as OMG MORE PRIZES GIVEN AWAY WHAT A GUY!!!!!ONE!!ELEVEN!!

Y'all realize this is gonna go on until he kicks, right? He'd be smarter to make a HUGE announcement that This Is My Last Season, and then he and the network milk the hell out of it all season long, and you run Bob's Final Show in primetime to a mammoth audience. It even feeds the ego, fer God's sake.

Barker's unofficial goal (http://\"http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=1755&view=findpost&p=14293\") stated several years ago was to host until he reached his 50th consecutive year on television. Not sure what it will be now.

I think deep down he's afraid of retiring. To a degree, the show keeps him active (instead of sitting at home & deteriorating mentally).

During a Monday taping last year, a camera went down right before the Showcase. He seemed very tired after going 15 minutes extra, which doesn't seem like a lot. But I don't know if that's because that cut into his normal nap time between shows.

Forget all this speculation. Have they started rehearsing Rich Fields (WASHES MOUTH OUT WITH SOAP) or somebody else to take over the TV show? As a guy pushes 90, the odds of him pulling a Johnny Olson* become ever greater.

*With all due respect to the memory of the departed and dearly beloved Mr. Olson.

Bob's official 50th anniversary will fall on December 31, 2006. Truth or Consequences debuted with him hosting on December 31, 1956.

To me, Bob is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. I think most people that come to the show know that Bob is an 82 year old man, and not the dark haired Bob that could actually withstand some beating.

Still, Bob has the amazing stamina and mentality as Jack LaLanne has, and LaLanne just turned 91!

If Bob doesn't know when to hang up his mike, certainly Roger or CBS will find some dignified way to let him know.

The show, and Bob, are continuing so that's okay by me. Its a dumb cliche but I did not expect it to be this long. I remember something about how he wanted to stay on the show at least 'to the year 2000' and that was several years ago now.

To those who think Rich is rehearsing to be Bob's fill in/replacement...there's a better chance of me getting that opportunity.  BTW, to you Fremantle employees, I am a capable person with talent like you would not believe...ah screw it.

Say, Mr. Lemon...don't the "fanbois" say eleventy-one instead of one, eleven?

I'm kinda the same way. I remember watching the 25th anniversary special, which was 10 years ago this year, and I remember thinking it was a big deal THEN that Bob had re-upped for 5 years (taking him into 2001), and thinking how surprised I would've been if he had made it till then.

In a way, I'll be surprised if he makes it to '11, but then again I won't...wasn't Bob Hope doing specials up through his 90s (age, not the decade)? Even though his health deteriorated in his later years (mid-1990s up until his death), but I think he was just as strong when he was Bob's age.

How funny it would be if Fremantle sold a Barker-less TPIR to Fox. With Ryan Seacrest.

Valid point.  But I think it has been discussed here in the past that the one of the only hosts to hang 'em up voluntarily in the past has been Gary Moore.  Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Barker go out with a bang, but chances are he won't slow down until he's forced to, which is unfortunate.  Hopefully that day doesn't come anytime soon.

It's nice to see Barker re-uped for another 5 years.  Methinks it'll only last about 2 years or maybe 3 if he pushes it, but that's where I draw the line.  Besides, that contract is basically a series of "option years" just like his last one.  He'll let us know when it's time to "fade away into the sunset".  Untill then, let's enjoy the ride while it lasts.  I wish him all the best.

How much money would a 5 year contract be worth to Bob Barker? Obviously he isn't doing it for the money, but I would suspect him signing some sort of 5 year deal like this would be worth something decent. Does anybody have any clue to this? This is just out of idle curiosity, nothing more...

I'm sure you enjoy your insider status, and you certainly must have reasons for this blanket statement.  Still, this being the Great Question of the Age, I don't see how you can vehemently, absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt rule out anything or anybody when you're talking about something that might happen two, three, five or more years from now.  Clearly, there's something about his status right now that takes him out of the running, but things change.  Seems like it wasn't all that long ago that TPIR announcers would "never again" be seen on camera.
Title: Barker Re-Ups

The last Bob Hope specials had the stink of contractually-obligated all over them--it was obvious that Hope could not perform, so they just did "tributes" to him (he kept everything, so there were lots of clips available) and just showed him waving in the audience seated next to Dolores.

Even before then, he wasn't doing 195 hours a year of television--just three or four, taped over leisurely periods.

And I'm of two minds about Barker's announcement--I'm glad he's hanging in there, but I'm not sure he's going to realize it's time to hang it up.  There is something to be said about going out on top--and maybe it's time to have all of these live show hosts do Friday shows as an on-the-air audition for the big job.

I specifically asked this question because it seemed to be the rumor that just won't die, ever since the announcer tryouts 2 years ago.

Sure, anything's possible, but if he does become host (and I'm talking full-time, not a sub) and I'm serious here, I'm flying out to Mid-Michigan and buying you dinner at the best spot in town.

What is needed is for Fremantle and CBS to get together at the appropriate time and tell him "It's time." If he balks, let him go. They've got people who can take his place, and it's time to confront the myth that the show won't work without him. In the mean time, they should definitely be accomodating guest emcees, if not every Friday, an occasional segment here and there.

I'm actually OK with Outback, though "best" is probably Stillwater Grill, and that's closer to my house anyway.

But no, that's not a bet I want to take.  At this point, I doubt that there's anybody who's even remotely considered a favorite for the gig. And obviously you have insider knowledge, so that's a sucker bet anyway.  I'm just saying that there's a difference between quashing a rumor that he's being groomed for the gig and saying with absolute confidence that there's absolutely no way he'll be considered for the job if Barker hangs it up five years from now.

If Fields is interested in the job (and even that decision might change with time) he would have to have seriously napalmed some bridges along the way not to be given the courtesy of a tryout.  That fact alone would at the very least put him ahead of, say, Chris Lemon, no matter how entertaining Clock Game might become otherwise.

Honestly, I've always felt that it was more of a screw your neighbor type move. I understand where you're coming from, I guess I also see it as a "chicken" way out, almost like a desperate move. From most of the contestants I've seen do it, it looks more like a "Oh shit! I can't think of a better price, so I'll just go a dollar higher!"

I honestly never even thought of the strategy, maybe because the average TPiR contestant prolly can't even spell strategy. ;-)

Maybe, but pretty often when I see it, the player asks for the bids to be repeated, and then contemplates, and makes an intelligent, rational, and correct bid, in direct antithesis of everything we know about the average TPiR contestant. :)

And, of course, even if you are dumb enough not to be able to come up with a bid, it at least shows a glimmer of intelligence to "take" the bid of someone who didn't lock up.

My vote: give the contestants who turn around 10 seconds, then proceed without them. "Maybe you'll bid next time, Bald Spot."

But doesn't Barker own a piece of Price?
Speculated, but never proven.

One wonders if Trebek or Sajak(who did made hints about retiring from WOF a couple of years ago) will retire before Barker does?
Considering the amount of money they make compared to how many days they work (what is it 30 or so days a year), I doubt it.

I'm sure you enjoy your insider status
Honestly, I've never really considered myself inside, although some may see that as pure B.S. I just consider myself a fan of the genre who never, ever takes anything for granted. I like to think I've added some value to our discussions over the years.

And obviously you have insider knowledge, so that's a sucker bet anyway
Well, I wouldn't have expected you to fly out to NJ to buy me dinner if you lost, but point taken.

From most of the contestants I've seen do it, it looks more like a "Oh shit! I can't think of a better price, so I'll just go a dollar higher!"
Maybe, but pretty often when I see it, the player asks for the bids to be repeated, and then contemplates, and makes an intelligent, rational, and correct bid...[/quote]
Or bids $420.

Note I said "pretty often" and not "always". :)

The TRUE dumbasses, IMO, are the players in the second and third seats (PARTICULARLY second seat) who engage in the X+1 gambit, since they are just BEGGING for the guy in the last seat to snipe them.

The only time I've ever been happy with a player making this move was a few years ago.

The first person was a dumbass college boy and bid $420. The second player, a middle aged lady, looked at the college boy with disgust and indignantly proclaimed "$421!"

Strategically, it was a bad move, but I had to laugh at her being willing to throw the round for herself just to put a college kid in his place.

(Plays along)

It's e-a-s-y, EASY, for cool245 to be a contestant on The Price is Right, all said person has to do is send $1,000 in a regular mailing envelope to Jim Williams P.O. Box...

Sad thing is, cool245 prolly would.

If you'll excuse me, it's time to fidget with my new cheap-o Walmart printer.

The pool of possible hosts probably only consists of those who have hosted a PiR live show. Enough said.

I, too, would pay to see Lemon berate idiotic contestants, but I do have one question: How would you handle Samoans?

Most likely, it's because most Barker news involves one of two things: whatever legal trouble he's gotten himself into now, or a flexing of his ginormous ego.

Then some commentary follows, then the TPiR fanbois chime in with some asinine justification and how BARKER'S STILL THE MAN WOOOOOOOOOO OMG LOL!!!!!111!!!111ONEHUNDREDELEVEN

Then the flame war ensues.

It would be kinda like, oh, I dunno, if someone piped up and said that everyone here should be more like Zach Horan. :)

Well, let's see what I can do...

Zach Horan made a pointless minutia post on UseNet on July 17, 1997 in regards to the 25th anniversary of TPiR. I don't recall if he was flamed.

How was that?

Getting back to the humorous idea of our honorable Mr. Lemon hosting Price...add me as his sad foil, and the hilarity would abound...

Chris: Hey Fred Roggin's only fan?

Chris: Put down that Poppycock, and fetch me a fanboi!
Me: I've got the ultimate one, Chris...IRIS MASON!  COME ON DOWN!  You're the next contestant on the...Price...is...Right, and what the...

(Irismason stands up as if he was a contestant in the 127th Upperclass Twit of the Year competition and starts walking out of the studio.)

Chris: Wow.  Just wow.  What a twit.

Then I'd intro some sort of Spam involved IUFB leading to a chorus of...yeah.

OK, I'm probalby rehashing old arguments, and I don't have the benefit of being a game show insider.  What I do realize is that Barket is the executive producer of the show, and he'll go out on his own terms, health permitting.  If  his health doesn't permit and if he can have a role in determining his successor, he'll do it.  So what if he signed a five-year contract?  What's the point of this pissing contest over when he'll really call it quits?  Sheesh!

You wanna argue over something else that is meaningless?  I'll give you a topic.   Debate amongst yourselves whether my beard is made of spinach.  Go. Discuss.
