Title: Temptation
Post by: digiblader on July 11, 2005, 09:05:17 PM
After looking at the new Aussie of Sale Of The Century, which is called Temptation, I was thinking...

Is it possible that FremantleMedia would ever consider bringing this show to US shores?

Based on what I've seen, and with the blockbuster ratings in Australia, it would be great if they made the show for the US.. most likely for syndication though since networks don't care about game shows in their lineups.

Good time slots in syndication are pretty much locked up and the earliest it could be launched properly is September of 2006.  I'd shoot for a short-run network primetime tryout, then go from there.  I would change the title from "Temptation" to "Sale of the Millenium"

We may see something if Deal or No Deal is a hit here. Then maybe Fremantle will use Sale to compete with it.

We had a big money revolution in 1999/2000, but if Deal becomes a hit, we may have an Australian revolution in 2005/2006.

One other thing- does anybody have an idea of who might be the host of Deal or No Deal?

All unjustified bashing aside, several Invision members and myself were discussing who we'd like to see host Deal.  One name mentioned by multiple individuals was Jimmy Carr.  I'm sure said people have their reasons for thinking Carr would be a good host for such a show...

I could see Carr easily.  I would've said the accent might've been a barrier, but it didn't seem to bother NBC about Vernon Kay, who accent is worse than Carr's.

This is what I'm afraid of...

"Scott?  Jeff.  Listen, ever since Trump heard about 'Deal,' he keeps calling me and demanding to be host.  I try to get him out of it, and he keeps saying, 'Apprentice?  Yooge.  Miss USA?  Yooge.   Miss Universe?  Yooge.  You still want those shows on your piece of s--t network, Jeff?  Give me Deal.'  What are we going to do?"

This is the same network that hired Billy Bush (who I didn't think was all that bad, but I am apparently alone in that regard), so I suppose it's certainly possible, but I dunno if it's a good idea. DoND is such a dry format, I think putting a host in there who is at his best when he is being low-key would be the kiss of death. Watch a clip from the Australian version sometime, and you'll see that Michael O'Keefe makes what is really a nothing show.

You're not. I didn't mind him either, despite his lineage and how annoying he is on "Access Hollywood." Then again, I didn't even mind the cross-dresser or fake boob or whatever the segment was that seemed to bother everyone.

Seems like Al Roker's name often comes up around NBC game shows, but we've been fortunate enough to avoid him. I would think DorND needs a host with a darker edge, not jolly ol' Al.

...except it's not a dark show.

(I'm not saying it's a GOOD show. I think the concept is random and idiotic. I'll give it a try, but I'm with the other Chris, I don't think a game with virtually no skill involved is interesting. But it's not dark.)

Again, watch a clip of the Aussie one. It's a nice bright set. O'Keefe does the Happy Host thing, he's jovial and seems to want the contestants to do well.

That said, yeah, they'll get Nicotero or JD Roth in there.

Since we're throwing names out wildly, I'll put my .02 in and say Pat Kiernan... but he's probably better suited for a Q/A like Temptation.

This might be a good vehicle for Todd Newton, OTOH; but NBC hasn't released anything about the show yet.... just that it's ordered episodes.

BTW, Chris -- count me in on the "Billy was OK" group; he wasn't that bad at all.

What is amusing me is the people tossing out names who have never so much as seen a clip from the show. (Not saying you're among them, 'Yaki.)

While I'd love to see Kiernan on a game show again, DoND would be a waste of his mad reading skillz. I'd love to see him on a Sale-type quizzer, but since all of the experience I have with him is Studio 7, I don't know if he has the personality to carry the Instant Bargain and endgame segments.

And this is where we come back to Billy Bush or Todd Newton; they both have the knack to go along with the flow if/when that crazy contestant goes along.  In a way, it's really stringing them along like Geoff Edwards would with TH.

GAME SHOW PROPOSAL: TEMPTATION

Cast

Host: Jim Perry
Announcer: K-Sly (Kathleen Taylor)
Co-Hosts (or Models): Natasha Yi, Rachel Reynolds, Shane Stirling, Lanisha Cole, Brandi Sherwood, Christy Hemme, K-Sly

Opening spiel: "Today on television's most 'virtually realistic' bargain sale, we're offering a (name of car) valued at (manufactured suggested retail price) for (a greatly reduced price offered on $otAG); (insert 2nd prize) valued at (mnufactured suggested retail price) for (a greatly reduced price offered on $otAG). TWO of the incredible bargains on...Temptation! And now, here's the star of the show, Jim Perry!"

Alternate: This week, players can win (insert 4 prizes here) and continue a journey to a fortune in cash and prizes including (insert car here) and $25,000 in cash, over $75,000 waiting to be won, onnnnnnnnn Temptation!!! And here's the star of the show, Jim Perry!!!!

Three players, compete in "Temptation: Arcade Mode", a video arcade shopping game show where they can buy merchandise prizes (from the ordinary to the ornate) at greatly reduced prices., in this Sale of the Century/Nick Arcade crossover

The show starts off with the "face-off", a thirty-second match on a video game, and the high scoring player received $5 and control of the board while the other 2 players received $20. The object of the game was to move mikey, an animated video character, from one side of the board to a predetermined goal. The Team in control decided which way to move. Each square they landed on contained either puzzles to solve, a pop quiz question about sports, a video challenge or the "Fame Game" on which a team could win a prize or additional money added to their score from a nine-square board consists of pictures of celebrities (nine network only) by buzzing in and answering a "Who am I?" question., if s/he lands on the fame game the first time a $10 value is up there, 2nd time a $15 is up added, 3rd time $25 is added, and burgular symbol which confetti will fall on the studio and allows you to take $5 off your score to the opponent, A video challenge meant the team that was in control got to choose which of the five video games they want to played. The Contestant played the game after  using a Magna Doodle, wrote down how much money they want to wager (If the player has $20 or less, the maximum wager was $20), after the Video Challenge, the player adds the score from the video challenge to their winnings. A team lost control of the game board and $10 when "Mikey" landed on a "game over" square or when it missed a question. During each round, the team that was in the lead was offered in Round 1 the vault, The player with the highest amount of money at the time of the game has the opportunity to grab a random monetary amount - ranging between $1 and $5000 - at a cost of $10 of their score. The range counter spins and only stops when the player buzzes in. They get to keep whatever amount comes up.
"Instant bargain" (only in rounds 2 or higher) which could be purchased with the player's accumulated cash total (example: a Autographed Bat for $10). The first player to reach the goal in the first round could earn $20 by correctly answering a question chosen from three possible categories by the 2 opponents.

A second round was played almost the same rules as the first. Dollar values were doubled but instead of a goal, there was a "Sixty-Zecond Speed Zone" where each rapid-fire question added or deducted $10 from the players' scores in the final 60 seconds. After the "speed zone", the player with the most money won the game and played for additional cash added to their bankroll.

The winning player will play one more game and tried to complete three tasks of a video game in sixty seconds. Each game had three parts to be completed. The first task for $25 if completed, The second for $50, and attempted The final task for $100. After the three task game, the team could either use their winnings to purchase prizes from VSN (Video Shopping Network) or come back to the next show and earn more. The prizes were offered at greatly reduced prices, with the more expensive prizes requiring more cash to be entitled to buy them. The wizard's cash jackpot started at $50,000 and increased $1000 a day until claimed. Any team was lucky enough to win everything left over with over $100,000 in cash and prizes if they accumulated at least $1,000 in winnings (as mentioned in the opening spiel).

Alternate: The champion faced a 20-number board and chose squares one at a time, looking to match two squares with the same prize and win that prize. The board concealed six prizes worth between $2500 and $15,000, the car, $5000 cash, $10,000 cash, and two wildcards, which when revealed gave the contestant the next prize they chose automatically., and s/he matched 2 wildcards then s/he wins everything.

Cast
Host: Jim Perry
sometime later in the pitch session
"Instant bargain" (only in rounds 2 or higher) which could be purchased with the player's accumulated cash total (example: a Autographed Bat for $10).

What I would do to see Jim Perry's face as he reads this should he be an Invision lurker.
A sawbuck for an autographed bat of whom? Jim Perry? Reg Grundy? Blake Emmons? Crazy Horse?
Normally, I just read these and move on but this is my favorite quiz show you've sent to the slaughter. May the Almighty have mercy on your soul come Judgment Day.
By the way, did you come up with this idea before or after 9/11/2001?
And was Richard Dawson even considered for the hosting job?

I don't know what the flying &$#@ you're smoking, but I don't even think Fremantle would mess the show up that badly.

BRICK!!! not because it made no sense, but because you're $%&#'g up a perfectly good show for no reason.

Well, Since that post made no sense whatsoever, here's a semi-better Sale/temptation update...
(edits made after some polite suggestions)

Round 1: Questions worth $5 each
Instant Bargain
Round 2: Question worths $5 each
Instant Bargain
Fame Game-played same as before, except it's back to faces. if the show were on a network, it would use the faces of stars from that network. If it were syndicated, it could be any stars.
Round 3: Questions worth $10 each
Instant Bargain
Fame Game
Speed Round: Questions worth $10 each.

All contestants recive their scores in cash and the prizes they won on stage.

The end Game: The $ale of the Century/Great Temptation
Contestants win it all if they reach a score of $1000. This makes it so that better players (ken Jennings wannabes) can win in shorter amounts of time. Here's the prize chart. As before, they "buy" these prizes at greatly reduced prices.

Day #1- An ultimate Entertainment package, valued at 7-9K
Day #2- A trip, valued at 9-11K
Day #3- 3 rooms of furniture, valued at 13-15K
Day #4- A mid-sized sedan, valued at 20-25K
Day #5- A $30,000 shopping Spree
Day #6- A Trip Around the World, valued at 40K or so
Day #7- A Boat, valued at 50 K
Day #8- A luxury Car, valued at at least 75 K

At this part of the game, they can buy the prize-but can walk at anytime.

"The Great Temptation buyout-part 1"-On day 8, the contestant has the option of walking with all their prizes and 1/4 of the cash jackpot at that point. If they decide to take it with their prize and win, they are deemed a winner and retire... if not they, can continue to...

"The Great Temptation buyout-part 2"- On day 9 If the contestant has won their game they can win the jackpot instantly by winning the game...but if they feel so prudent, they can win 4 times the cash jackpot by answering one final question. this segment would add "millionaire lights," "isloation booths" et al. If they win, then they win the Jackpot, times 4...if they lose, they lose the jackpot, but not the prizes.

The jackpot starts at 100K and increases 10K each day it is not won.

Set: A cross between the latter-day aussie years, with some american flair. The contestant podiums would have glass block behind it, staying blue-tinted during the question round, green during the IB/FG parts, and Red during the Speed Round. Geographically, everything would be set up exactly as it was before in the 80s, but the center "pit" would have the logo on it. The doors would also be used for some prizes, but wouldn't open fully until the end of the game (when they split apart). In the $ale round, the only prize on screen would be-the car, and a gratuitous 100,000+ sign. The rest of the prizes would be on plasma screen TV's and slide out on stage (like Name that Video) and would be purplely-blue when not won, and would turn red with a red "SOLD" sign on it.

It may be just me, but you have too much time on your hands when you have it narrowed down to the exact prizes you'd give away.

No it's just you.

Maybe you would actually rather wait more than 10 seconds before a post appears that ripping it to shreds, hmm?

I'm sorry, but I saw nothing wrong with Ben's idea. I mean, that was typically the types of prizes offered on the Perry version, except for the second car. If you're gonna do a $ale revival, you'd need to put the types of prizes offered for each day. I saw no problem with it, esp. since it was pretty true to the version I loved so much.

Amazing synopsis, pal. But I gotta ask this.

Wouldn't it be a lot easier on us if you just ate an entire box of graham crackers and two whole bags of Chee-tos like normal people do?

Right now, my daughter's into graham crackers... and I thank you for your compliments.

May Shiva bless your IR tables.

Oh -- you *weren't* talking about my post?  Nevermind.

The Great Temptation!!! Oooo, like the sound of it. I would nix the idea of quadrupling the cash jackpot, especially since at $10K per day it's likely to be well into the hundreds of thousands as it is without the multiplication. Not much really has to be changed with this game. It's a masterpiece on its own. Most humans haven't seen the program in sixteen and a half years if they've even seen it at all. Just like Password. And that's a pity.
