Title: $OTC Questions
Post by: sotcfan2004 on May 13, 2004, 10:20:57 AM
I know I ask a lot about $ale of the Century, but I did miss out on this show quite a bit.

Does anyone know who the all-time biggest winner was on 80's $ale?

Did anyone try and play for the jackpot and lose?

Was the first instant bargain (that 8" deep stereo) bought or passed on?

Finally, what's the most money Jim Perry ever offered a player to buy an instant bargain?

If anyone can help me with any of these questions, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,
John M.

IIRC It was John Gose in regulation play, with over $150K on the syndie version in 1985. One of the TofC winners from the NBC run, Stephanie from the 2/85 TofC, had a grand total of $150K+ when she won her TofC.

THe most incentive cash that I remember Jim offering is $2K during an IB in the first TofC in November 1983.

That clears up some of the confusion.  Anyone have any of the other answers?

Not that I'm questioning Zach's answers, but I have an episode in which Tom O'Brien's total winnings come to about 153K. I'd have to check the tape to be sure, but I think Jim even remarks that he was (at least at the time) Sale's highest money winner. That was from 1987, after the syndicated run ended.

As to ansering the other questions, I know that Alice Conkwright defeated a champ who was pretty close to the jackpot, and I just recently got an episode where Dawn McKellar loses by 2, while shooting for a 99K jackpot.  Im sure there were plenty more, but those 2 spring to mind.

I'm reasonably sure that the first Instant Bargain was not bought (but not completely positive--at least I got a 50/50 shot at it, though  ;-) ).

OK, here's a couple more questions:  (BTW, thanks to those who have helepd to answer my previous questions:

Who won the premiere episode of $ale in 1983?  Did they keep going or retire?

Was anything other than cash ever offered as a 'Sale Surprise'?

What is the most expensive car ever offered on $ale?

In the Fame Game, when 'Mystery Money or Pick Again' showed up, did anyone ever take the Mystery Money?  How much was it?

Just anxious to learn a little $ale trivia.  It was a great show, from what I can remember, and makes today's reality shows look like the crap that they are.  Anyhoo, thanks for your help!

I thought I saw some totals up in the 160s especially on the syndie show.

I have a memory of tickets to see some musical artist(Diana Ross) being offered as a $ale Surprise in SUmmer 1984.

The most expensive cars offered on $ale were offered very early in the run, when they'd have $40K cars(in 1983 dollars). From Jan-May 1983, they didn't have a cash jackpot available, and the car was the plateau before winning all the prizes on the stage.

The Mystery Money was known to be as low as $1.75 or as high as $1500. The syndie version offered a "Trip or Pick Again" in the Fame Game on a few occasions.

I seem to remember they had a "Champion of Champions" tournament and a lady won and I heard her total and figured the bouquet she was given onstage made the total a cool $250,000.

I think the first car was something like a $50,000 Mercedes, and it included the "clear suitcase" with somewhere between $3000 and $6000 in it, to make the total of all of the prizes exactly $95,000 (this was before the cash jackpot; once that started, the cars became much cheaper).

Okay, allow me to answer your questions

1: The person was Tom O'Brien, who won over $152,000

2: Someone was going for the lot when he was defeated by Alice Conkright

3: Yep, the stereo was bought after Jim knocked the price down a couple dollars and offer the player $100 in cash

4: $2000

5: The first champ was Janice, who won with $49. Not sure how far she went, however she was VERY nervous the whole time

Hope that helps, the person to turn to for all your $otC needs is the expert himself, Anthony R. Nichols !

It's not that, it's just that I don't have the luxury of a GS collection, and I have never seen $ale outside of what was shown on USA in the early 90s.  It would be nice if there were more video clips or pics posted.  The $ale that USA viewers saw apparently left out a lot of things.  If the guy in charge of 'Page o Clips' is reading this, it would be great to see what I've been missing all these years.

USA only ran $otC for two years, and $otC ran six years on NBC(some 1600 shows), plus another 300 shows in a year and a half syndicated run. USA evidently only acquired the syndie run plus the last six or so months of the NBC run(save for the last couple episodes), and they circled back to the NBC episodes after airing the NBC and then the Syndie. That's why we didn't see the entire evolution of the show on USA. And reruns elsewhere sadly is not likely at this point.

There are those traders who circulate some early episodes of 80s $otC on the trading circuit, including the premiere. The 1969-74 NBC/syndicated original version is believed lost or destroyed, and no episodes of that are on the trading circuit.

Yeah, but I don't really have anything to trade with.  I am an amateur GS fan, so to speak.

I noticed Anthony Staub has a very impressive $ale collection.  It's funny that none of the main $ale fanpages (Original Game Show Page seems to be the only remaining one) go in-depth about the many changes $ale underwent.

That is absolutely right. Also, I have a good connection with Mr. Staub, and he gives me whatever rare episodes of $ale he gets. He has helped me greatly, and I always will return the favor. In fact, I have a bonus tape, to be sent soon, for him.

Well, I see that there is an even bigger $ale of the Century fan than myself. So, let me help you out with a timeline of all changes that took place throughout the show's run...as far as I know (significant or otherwise):

March 1983: Sally Julian replaced by Lee Menning. Mort wins the lot, totalling $95,000 exactly.

May 1983: Cash jackpot put into play, $10 and $15 money cards added.

Early 1984: Faces on the "Fame Game Board" replaced with numbers.

Mid 1984: Beige set replaced with more familiar gold set and podia.

Fall of 1984: Winner's Board put into play.

Early 1985: Summer Bartholomew replaces Lee Menning, Syndie version premieres (with Shopping Round reinstated; cash jackpot can ONLY be won with the entire lot at this point)

Late 1985: Fame Game board is randomized a la Press Your Luck; Shopping Round done for good.

Mid 1986: Final Instant Bargain replaced with Instant Ca$h; syndie version ends.

Summer 1987: Winner's Board replaced with Winner's Big Money Game; five puzzles in 25 seconds.

Early 1988: Four puzzles in 20 seconds.

Summer 1988: Rani White becomes ONLY player to win $50,000 under the rules of the WBMG.

That pretty much does it. Anyone willing to make corrections or additions are welcome.

 Anthony:

I recently had the good fortune to purchase a first-season contestant's logo pin (a holdover from the Australian version of the show; this practice only lasted until the introduction of the gold/yellow set) from a woman named Helen Darvall who claims SHE was the first person to win the lot on the American show.  I would not have recognized the pin as legit if were not for two things:

One - the lament of one Mike Klauss, won advised me of the auction and,
Two - Bob Staub's generous trade of an entire tape full of Sale episodes, including the premiere, Laura Chambers' first episode, a 2001 Australian episode (wow!  Cool set and music, and while Glenn Ridge - the Pat Sajak of Australia -  can't sell IBs like Jim Perry, he's a quite likable chap, and a damn good question reader) and numerous other big wins.

To be specific, NBC dropped the fee plugs from ALL of its gameshows beginning in fall 1987.  The shows included Sale, Classic Concentration, WoF, Scrabble, Super Password, and WLoD.

Now, every syndicated show has at least 2 to 4 fee plugs!, including the Closed Captioning sponsor plug.

WLOD began on NBC Daytime on 9/7/87 without any end-of-show fee plugs(while the syndie version that premiered that evening had fee plugs throughout its run). The other NBC daytime game shows still had end of show fee plugs until 12/25/87(our own Splinkynip was in the WOF Teen Week finals that aired that Xmas day). End-of-show fee plugs were back for Scrabble, Scattergories, and Caesar's CHallenge in 1993(don't recall if Family Secrets had them or not). When CLassic Concentration aired reruns from 1987 in 1992-93, the fee plugs were edited out.

Thanks for that post. Ms. Darvall's account was pretty entertaining to read. It was not easy to get that $500 needed to buy the lot.

The clip of Mort's $95,000 win came from...of all places...the 15th Anniversary Special of the Aussie version of $ale of the Century (thanks to Joe Raygor for that episode!). That is the only clip I know of that exists from the year of 1983, besides the premiere episode and Laura Chambers' three appearances. I would love to see some 1983 episodes as well, but it is going to be rather difficult to find someone who has any from that far back.

By the way, David Rogers' $109,000 win was the highest the cash jackpot in the history of US $ale. The syndie version came close; the jackpot escalated past the $80,000 mark and continued to rise after Jan Roach decided to buy the twin Fieros. It reverted back to $50,000 not too long after that (Winner's Board put into play).

Though I don't remember seeing the Mercedes, I think it was the SE Roadster because the Coupe I think was a bit less expensive back then but that's just my hunch.
