I was thinking about this last night, and the emergence of the Musical Chairs episodes prompted me to bring up this question which was addressed ages ago, possibly a decade plus ago.
What is the most recent show in which nothing exists? I don't know if we had a concise answer way back when but the answer has changed due to the appearance of certain clips and episodes, like Baffle and the original $ale of the Century. I have some ideas of shows from the early 70s (Words and Music, and Joe Garagiola's Memory Game), but I'm so out of the loop that I don't know if either of those is the right answer.
-
Snap Judgement has audio, but no video.
-
The Girl in My Life count as a game show? That was around 1974.
-
When it comes to the original SOTC, there's audio of a complete Jack Kelly episode, but not many collectors have it (I don't). Wiki says there are five of Joe's Memory Game at UCLA, though I've made several trips there and never seen them.
Wiki sldo says all the SpinOff shows were found, but has anybody actually seen one?
This topic fascinates me as well. I also personally like to make a distinction between clips surviving vs entire episodes. The Girl In My Life just really, really, really wasn't a game show, but it's hard to imagine what other club you'd put it in, so it's a reasonable placeholder until I hear something better.
-
I've never seen nor heard ANYTHING from the 1970-71 run of "Name That Tune" with Richard Hayes.
-
I was thinking the Saturday morning kids show "Runaround" was shot around 1974-75, but it was actually 1972-73.

I like it. I also like that it's one I remember vividly.

According to the collection website they do have 5 episodes non-circulating and not in a format that they can play there. So, they exist and have them but no one can really watch em.

Hayes did a podcast interview with Steve Beverly a number of years ago and said this version never got past the pilot stage. Century Communications' ads for the show in Broadcasting between December '70 and March '71 certainly make it sound like the show was up and running, but they were probably a little too optimistic.
As to shows without any episodes existing/circulating, I've never heard of any syndicated High Rollers (75-76) or Celebrity Sweepstakes on the trading lists.

The last half of that statement is definitely incorrect, in terms of existence.

I think he meant the nighttime (syndicated) CS, but then again that is splitting hairs -- daytime/nighttime versions -- as the show from those years is available in some form. If we are hair-splitting, I've never heard of any syndicated eps existing either.

As I said above, that original statement is incorrect. I know of the existence of multiple nighttime CS episodes.
-
Only thing from the 70s that comes to mind would be Clark Race's version of You Don't Say.
A few items from the mid to late 60s: Double Exposure, Fractured Phrases, Word For Word, Showdown, and Beat the Odds w/ Johnny Gilbert. Haven't seen / heard anything on the syndicated run of Oh My Word either.
I've got audio only episodes Words and Music & Memory Game stashed away somewhere, so at least playable audio of those are around.
-
For me, Wizard of Odds would be a tremendous find, as would Spin Off, and the Face Lifters version of High Rollers. The Museum of TV/Radio has some 70s Truth or Consequences, but i'm honestly surprised as to why there aren't more of those in existence.

I'm pretty sure a great deal of Truth or Consequences exists in the Ralph Edwards archive, but very little of it is available for viewing.

Finally got to watch a (pretty late) episode of The Wizard of Odds the last time I was at UCLA. I'm not entirely sure it was worth the wait.
/What am I saying, of COURSE it was! It just wasn't very good.

Hmmm (mouth waters)...I didn't know about this. This is probably my most-wanted show to see more of right now. Anyone know why none of these have found their way to the youtubes yet? Practically everything else has.
FTR, I'd love to see more of just about any "rare" '70s show. Spin-Off wound be on my list (at least there's a 5-minute clip), or even Money Maze if anything besides the pilot exists.

There is an extant episode of Money Maze- it's on one of the Warhol tapes at the Paley Center.

I know that episodes 2 & 12 of the Nighttime CS are in some collections here and there, but they haven't been posted online out of respect for the original source's wishes.
As for Spin-Off, how long has it been since it was reported to have been found along with TJW? Almost 18 years?
EDIT: forgot to mention that I learned from a trusted source a couple months ago that the run of The Moneymaze DOES still exist, but the tapes were not well cared for and are plagued by tracking issues and blurry picture.

2 words: DC Video (http://dcvideo.com).
Other than that, very surprising news. :)

Isn't MINDREADERS wiped?

Isn't MINDREADERS wiped?
There are two on YouTube.
Many series were "wiped" or otherwise destroyed, but for the purposes of this conversation, we're talking about the bare minimum of anything surviving.
-
How about Pro Fan? The only "video" I've ever seen from that is a promo from a San Francisco station that was nothing more than a publicity still. That and a shot in Maxene Fabe's book of Ken Norton, Sr. unsuccessfully trying to sink a putt.
That would bring us to 1977.

Ooh! That's a great one! I remember when I first got the Fabe book and being absolutely baffled that she gave significant ink to a show I'd never heard of. We don't talk much about sports games (god I loved Sports Challenge as a kid) so it's not surprising this hasn't come up much. But I think we have a winner!
Especially odd considering that it was syndicated, and those tapes seem to have a higher survival rate. Does anybody know if this might have been a weekly show with VERY few episodes produced?
-
I have an episode of Pro-Fan from what appears to be a studio master, although the tracking is much like those Musical Chairs episodes that just surfaced. Tommy John is one of the celebrity team captains, and the bonus round that day was to make a 5-10 split.

Per EOTVGS, Pro-Fan was a weekly series airing between May and September 1977, with 13 episodes produced. So that fits your description. I have no idea why it became a favorite of Maxine Fabe's.
Matt and I are old enough to remember when Fabe's TV Game Shows! was really the only general information reference book devoted exclusively to the genre - before the book came out, there were no such options, and her book was it until 1987. She made some strange choices for the shows she liked and disliked, some of her references were questionable (Jim MacKrell told me the reference to him as "that nice boy who might become crazy when he's drunk" came from The National Enquirer and had no basis in reality), and the copyediting and proofreading aren't great - but it was the best we had at the time.

I liked it so much, that I borrowed my copy from the library, and then "lost" it. I couldn't have been the only one. :)

Guilty here. Had it for 21 years...along with 3 other books :-[
Back to the subject, I'm surprised Pro-Fan hasn't made it to YouTube yet.
I would but my copy's disappeared into the abyss.

Stu Shostak had said last year he was going to upload an epidode of Dennis James's version of Name That Tune to Youtube, but never got around to it from what I've seen or he changed his mind about it.

A clip of Wizard of Odds also appears in BUZZR's Game Changers documentary. I believe GSN aired the pilot on its first day, no?

Nope, never saw the light of day on GSN.

Interesting. If that still exists, it makes you wonder about other daytime ABC shows of that era that still may survive - like Kennedy's Split Second for one. Or, if it was just the production company that maybe saved them, what about The Big Showdown?
-
That KBHK logo. Wow.

Who owns Kennedy's Split Second these days, anyway? Is it Fremantle?

I believe so (CBS owns the 1986 version).
And I’m certain the nighttime Art Fleming Jeopardy does exist...somewhere.
As for Truth Or Consequences? Except for this 1977 promo from KMGH in Denver (at the very end of this video), no clips neither a full episode from Bob Hilton’s version haven’t seen the light of day on YouTube...yet.

Yes it has. It was many years ago, but the intro and first stunt from that version was posted. IIRC, the stunt involved a helicopter.

I had a full episode was up last year on the site, I think I still have it saved on the webspace. Quality's not great, but worth a look. I'll check and add it to the YouTube channel if I find it.

Our own TwoInchQuad said he saw a clip over a decade ago, though (from his description) it seems to have been a program ending without actual gameplay:

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of Canadian game shows don't exist anymore. Either that or broadcasters here are much less open to releasing their shows for repeat broadcasts. Even when GameTV were running traditional game shows, they only ran the same late 80s-early 90s series that have been in repeats off and on for years on other stations, which were mostly intended for US audiences anyway. The few Canadian only shows such as The Mad Dash only had 15 or so episodes that existed. I don't know if it's a story of not existing, or again, just CTV and CBC wanting to hold on to things. Not releasing the archives is just as good as not having them in my opinion. If you're not going to let anyone see them, don't bother having them. We had decades of Jim Perry shows on the air but all the public gets to see are the last 2 series taped in the US.

Am I the only one who remembers watching the entire series (on KBHK, no less - and it was on Saturday nights at 11:30, just like the promo said)?
Here's "the quick version":
Two teams of a contestant and a former athlete
The host (former NBC sports announcer Charlie Jones) alternated asking questions to the contestants (the two I remember: "In football, how many points do you get for a touchback?" (zero) and "Who led the World Football League in rushing when it folded in midseason?"). A correct answer was worth 10 points in the first period, 20 in the second, and 40 in the third (each one 4 minutes long), and that team's athlete then tried some sport-based stunt within 24 seconds that was worth the same number of points, although in the third period, each contestant could replace the athlete once, for 80 points. These were the stunts I can remember:
Baseball (pitch a ball through a cardboard strike zone)
Football (either throw a ball through a tire, or kick it over a goal post)
Basketball (either make a 6-foot hook shot or a free throw)
Golf (they had a machine where you hit the ball into a backdrop and it calculated where it would land on a particular hole; they had to get it within a certain distance; they also had a non-flat putting green)
Archery (get it within a particular section of the target)
Horseshoes (usually, get it within one shoe length of the target)
Tennis (either make serves, or return balls from a machine)
Hockey (score a goal against a cutout goalie that was moved back and forth)
Pool (make one or two shots from a predetermined layout of balls)
Bowling (converting a split of some sort)
The winning team (or both teams if the game ended in a tie, although none did) played a "grand slam" event for $15,000 in prizes, although that included a $11,000 52-day Mediterranean cruise that pretty much nobody kept; both the contestant and the athlete attempted it, and the contestant won if either of them succeeded. IIRC, three contestants won, two of them not only winning on the same stunt (making an 8-ball on the spot into a called pocket with the cue ball on the break line) but doing it themselves and not needing the athlete's help.

In Flint, Mi it was on Saturday afternoon, not always at the same time depending on whatever live sports were on.

Is there any footage of the 1988 Hanna-Barbera foray into game shows, Skedaddle? That's the latest one I can think of that I haven't seen hide nor hair of since.

Apologies for necroing this thread, but does anyone know if video exists of The New Celebrity Bowling from 1987? I was watching the original on Prime Video the other day and I realized I've never seen any trace of the revival online.

I've seen at least one reference book refer to that version as not having aired. Not sure of the veracity of that claim.

Most of one episode is on the trading circuit.

In the early-80s, a channel called the Satellite Program Network aired a show called The Shopping Game with Art James. I found an article from 1981 (https://www.newspapers.com/image/111821825/); does any video exist?

It's out there somewhere. Back when Brad Francini's gscentral was active...I think it was either 2000 or 2001...he posted a screenshot of the title graphic on his main page. There were three other shots to go with it. The first two were the logos to two shows called Celebrity Dominoes and Birds Of A Feather. (The former appears to have been a Canadian show from the 70s, not sure what the latter was but it looked very early 80s.) The last was a screenshot of a show with a giant green digital display; I learned many years later it was from the Body Talk pilot.
Unfortunately, archive.org doesn't seem to have preserved any of them. I saved the pictures, but this was roughly 20 years ago, I have no idea where they could be.
-
GilmoreBox, a YouTuber who frequently posts openings to random shows and pilots, posted the "Birds of a Feather" pilot opening a while back. Have not seen the full episode posted anywhere.

I forgot Brad had that on his page. Having seen the “Birds of a Feather” clip, I’ve been curious about that one, and have never found much. Not even a year.

How about “Remember This?” from about 1996. It was an MSNBC game show hosted by Al Roker, aired on Saturday nights. It was kinda like “Sports Challenge” but with NBC News clips.

I remember nothing about it, but it appears I have a copy of it on VHS. 1996 is awfully far into the development of home video for somebody somewhere not to have recorded something.

But also, looking at Wikipedia, 1996 is also the same year that MSNBC first launched. Would it necessarily have been on many cable systems from Day 1?
-
At least one episode of Remember This circulates. (Might be two, not sure if the episode Chuck Donegan has is the same one or not.) The one I have has Eastern Connecticut squaring off against Villanova...it's never been uploaded online as far as I can see, nor have any other episodes.
-
I recorded three eps of Remember This? back in the day. It’s 50-50 whether I still have the tape (half of my collection has changed hands a couple times; the other half is deep in a closet).
-
Mine is accessible (the advantage of having storage space at work!). I'll upload it tomorrow.
-
Remember This is no longer lost! (At least as far as YouTube is concerned.) Link in the Video and Audio Clips section. This seems to be a different episode than you guys were talking about. And it's not something I recorded, definitely something I picked up in a trade.
