Somebody needs to tell CNN that there were $10,000 and $20,000 versions of Pyramid that Clark hosted. (Twice so far, including once by Piers Morgan, they have said that he hosted $25,000 Pyramid but didn't mention the fact that it wasn't the earliest version he hosted.)
-
As a news writer, I will guess that "The $25,000 Pyramid" is a) easier to write than "10-20-25-50-and 100,000 Pyramids", b) easier to read* than "10-20-25......" therefore easier for the viewers/listeners to comprehend, and c) the most-recognizable version of the show, considering it's the one most often rerun, even to this day.
Sometimes, going with the most common option is easier, especially when his career consisted of so many shows. If I were at the station tonight, I'd likely go with "The $25,000 Pyramid" or "Pyramid game shows" to keep it simple. The viewers are prolly aware of other versions, but don't need to know of the exact figures...
*Best way to annoy your anchors is make the copy difficult or confusing to read.

This has got to be the fastest that GSN has responded with a tribute for a decased person. The fact that Pyramid is currently on their schedule probably contributed to that.
-
NBC has used a few variations of the phrase "From the $10,000 all the way to $100,000 Pyramid" tonight.
-
What's wrong with just saying "Clark hosted various incarnations of the Pyramid game show between 1973 and 1988" ? Isn't that 1) Clear-to-read copy, and 2) Covering all of your bases ?

Most people don't care about that much detail. He presided over the Pyramid. Boom. Done.

Understood.

That's still pretty wordy. The average viewer won't care when the show(s) aired. If you want to be all-inclusive, I'd go with "the various Pyramid game shows"...maybe have an ad-lib "like 'The $25,000 Pyramid'"...

For the six months that I was a college radio DJ, I also had a weekly newsread. I had about sixty seconds to tell the listeners what they needed to know. I didn't have time to trip over words, to explain nuances or dabble in punnery. Get in, say the lines, get out. Your line would have taken up six seconds of that time. "Clark famously hosted American Bandstand, The $25,000 Pyramid and TV's Bloopers and Practical Jokes" hits the high notes of his career and doesn't waste time. Listen to your local news radio station's top of the hour newscast to get an idea of waht we're talking about.

Add two episodes of Pyramid to the tribute with Dick playing the game. This will air Saturday from 1:00pm-2:00pm.

Very nice. Of course, if they wanted to go to a little extra trouble, they could have blown away the fan base by showing us two OTHER times that Dick Clark played the game....

Gotta record those - thanks for the advance notice.

What, they couldn't have bothered airing all three episodes of the Dick Clark Challenge? (I'll facepalm if they omitted the Betty White episode.)
And what Matt O. said -- Cullen $25,000 would've been a welcome sight.

Even if GSN had a 'lapse in judgement' (from their perspective) and opened the wallet would Viacom even have been able to find those two episodes on that short notice? (assuming they even have a clue where the series is stored in the first place)

When they aired the Woolery "Wheel" ep. during Merv's tribute, was that from someone on the trading circuit? Don't know why I'm leaning towards that idea, but it's definitely plausible I suppose.
As for the tribute, there's no need to go through all that trouble when you have eps. available where he played the game. Despite her revival of popularity, a lack of Betty White is not a big deal, because quite frankly the tribute's not about her. There's no reason why they can't dig up the 10/20K shows though. They could honestly do a tribute for a few hours, with a couple of eps. from those and the 25/100K versions.

I'm pretty sure it, and the other two daytime episodes GSN aired, all came from Paley Center. A 2004 Woolery interview (this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyHBl2bjaQY), in fact (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LDaNL8M9y6E)) showed clips of the March 1978 show also held by Paley Center...and it had a GSN logo.

And?

That 1976 show isn't in the Paley Center holdings. It is, however, in the Library of Congress holdings (meaning that was the episode Griffin Enterprises submitted for copyright purposes), and probably in Sony's vault somewhere.

True, but it was his strongest showing out of the three.

As usual, the average viewer not only doesn't know, they don't care.

My sources: Paley Center (http://www.paleycenter.org/collection/item/?q=%22Wheel+of+Fortune%22&p=3&item=B:47381), GSCentral.net (http://gscentral.net/wof/1976.htm). This is the only '76 episode which Paley Center doesn't give names for (May 20 (http://www.paleycenter.org/collection/item/?q=%22Wheel+of+Fortune%22&p=2&item=B:02135) uses Elliot/Kathi/Lee, the Dream Machine show (http://www.paleycenter.org/collection/item/?q=%22Wheel+of+Fortune%22&p=2&item=T:03469) uses Richard/Patty/Rick).
As such, I'm pretty sure the June 7, 1976 show wasn't in the trading circuit prior to GSN's airing, but it was somewhere that Brad Francini could see it (his site also has photos of the March 15, 1978 show, which I've never heard of as being in the trading circuit).

The Betty White episode? Betty and Dick did the Pyramid "week" together, no?

No, he played against different people. In one case, Coolio...was available.

That joke will never get old. Seriously.
-
The GSN schedule indicates they're showing the Betty White and Coolio eps, in that order.
-
Who participated in the third Dick Clark show? It was pre-empted in Seattle for a "special" Pyramid featuring Seattle newscasters. (Maybe something similar was done in other markets?)
-
I thought there were two Dick Clark/Betty White episodes, but I guess not.
ETA: Chuck Donnegan's tape listing says Karri Turner, who co-starred in JAG.

Oops... my bad. Nevertheless, I don't think the Paley Center is where GSN got their tape of the episode. Sony probably already had a copy.

He lost both games. If they're only airing two, that's a good enough reason for it to be the one left out!

He lost at least one to Coolio as well. I remember Coolio being zinged in the Winner's Circle for "Awards Shows" and he said "The 75th Annual Emmy Award...oop!" Can't remember if Dick won the other match.

Here's a nice side story regarding Dick Clark, from the Cincinnati Enquirer's Sunday edition. I provided some background and photo scan for the article. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/tv/2012/04/23/rob-braun-remembers-old-friend-dick-clark/
