On a semi-related note, when did the season end for J!? Or, are they continuing through the rest of the summer because of this unstoppable Jennings fella?
It ends on the 23rd.

A lopsided score will often mean the first commercial comes after 10-12 clues.
You would know ;-)

How is it determined, when the 1st commercial break is taken on Jeopardy in the middle of the Jeopardy round? Is there a designated number of clues that need to be played before the first break or what?
The season ends in a couple of weeks. I want to say the 23rd?

Now celebrating his 21st season on GSF!

It's definitely the 23rd  -  then the repeats of both kids' weeks, the
College Tourney, and the Teen Tourney take place with Season 21
 scheduled to start September 6th.
(Note:  Repeats may be pre-empted in some markets due to
      Olympic coverage...)

.....the break is taken whenever Matt Ottinger has the momentum......

How the hell do Matt's back pain pills determine the 1st break's placement? :-D
In terms of playing time, it usually takes about 5 or 6 minutes depending on how fast Alex reads some rather long clues or how one category has only a word or two in it.
KABC reliably starts "Jeopardy!" at 7:00 on the nose, and the first commercial break always comes between 7:04 and 7:05...closer to 7:05 if a Daily Double has been hit, closer to 7:04 if one hasn't.  I know this through the magic of TiVo (and it gibes with what I remember from 1999-2001, when I was regularly closed-captioning "Jeopardy!" and had a continuous on-screen time code to look at).
