Snopes' verdict on "in the butt, Bob!"
CherryPizza:
I posted this to alt.tv.game-shows before I realised that the worthwhile chatters had made the exodus to this board, so I'll just copy and paste my message here, and see what you lot think...
Well, if it's on the internet, it *must* be right!
Usually I'm not inclined to be so cynical when talking about snopes,
but I must query its new diagnosis of the Newlywed Game
incident.
Go on over to This page and you'll
see that they've upgraded the story to \"True\", and it seems that the
similar incident featuring \"Olga\" is the reason for it. At one point,
it was listed as \"Not quite\", and prior to that, it was \"False\".
Now, while the clip in question does show something similar to the
tale that has been circulating for God-knows-how-long, it is different
enough to still make the story as it is often told seem dubious.
What's your verdict, should it or shouldn't be be classified as
\"True\"?

It ain't true, because for the umpteenth time she said IN THE ASS.
Not \"up the butt.\"

Kevin Prather:
what's more, we have seen this clip 3 times in Game Show Bloopers specials.
inturnaround:
The text that forms the body of the snopes page seems to be correct, it's just the question and answer that are wrong.
Matt Ottinger:
Im not sure how Snopes classifies things, but I'd have to say \"mostly true\". Any urban legend, even one based on a true story, evolves over time and drifts away from 100% total accuracy. I don't believe that Eubanks was denying it for all these years because he was parsing the difference between \"in the butt\" and \"up the ass\". (Man, who's censoring this thread...?) I believe that he forgot that it happened at all, regardless of the exact words that were used.
As I recall, many people even claim that they HEARD it on the show, which is absurd, of course. My guess is that virtually every story on Snopes has false elements like that. That still doesn't change the fact that the essence of the story -- that a contestant misunderstood a question and responded with a vulgar anal reference -- is true.
