--- Quote from: thomas_meighan on December 01, 2025, 09:10:14 PM ---Looking through newspapers.com, Allen Ludden hosted these “Stop Arthritis” telethons every year from 1976 to 1980 in late January or early February. Wayne Rogers was a regular participant as well. The only year when Susan Blakely was mentioned was 1977 (LA Times, 2-5-1977, page 27). If that’s the correct year, Rosalind Russell’s photos were there to memorialize her; she had suffered from rheumatoid arthritis in her later years and advocated for research and funding.

What's in Getty Images seems to track all of that.  They have a selection of images from the 1977 telethon.  They don't have Susan on set, but they do have her there, and they do have the same set, and they do have Allen in the same suit.  (And I think they have Susan in the same shirt.)

Matt Ottinger:
This all brings up an interesting possibility about Allen's final months. He had left Password Plus in October of 1980, and even though he almost certainly wasn't up to hosting the entire telethon in March of 81, contemporary newspaper stories identify him as one of the galaxy of starts that would make an appearance over the course of the show.  If that happened (and there are logical reasons to believe that it may not have), then the 1981 Stop Arthritis Telethon would almost certainly have been his final TV appearance.

I suspect that the logical reasons are the prevailing reasons.  That said, apparently Tom Kennedy didn't just take over Password Plus duties.  He also hosted the 1981 telethon (source: Orange County Post)

This ticbit was not his final, but close to it.  Since it's the internet, someone has an episode guide to Toni Tennille's talk show.  Allen and Betty appeared on the Feb. 6, 1981 show, along with Mummenschanz.  I hope they did a bit together.

1977 tracks as the date. This shows Allen, Ed Asner, and Mary Tyler Moore; the stuff on the coffee table and the background photo are identical.

Allen is identified properly here -- the image on eBay might have come from a different stock agency.

Note the photographer is notorious paparazzi Ron Galella, who was famously sued by Jackie Onassis to keep him from taking unauthorized pictures.
